"this is the worst bbq on the east side" i paid way too much for this crap. the real sad part is that leo's used to be so good. i will never eat here again i would rather eat fast food. fries were just regular fries you could purchase in your local frozen food section with no seasoning, and the bakedbeanstasted like they came out of a "beans and wieners" can busch's canned bakedbeansare better. ribs were awful dry as acrylic weave on a hot summer day. "the only thing good was the cake" only gave the one star for the cake. maybe they should change their name to just leo's cake inc

i had lunch at leo's for the first time in a while 20 jan.  i got there about 1230, the place was crowded but thinning out.

i had an order of ribs, with bakedbeansand slaw.  these ribs were better than the last time i was here; there was a nice bark to them, and they were just the right smoky flavor.  a little more grease than i like, but not an issue.  tender, firm, meaty goodness.  thebeanswere excellent again, and the slaw was pretty good as well, but i think i will stick with the potato salad in the future.

great stuff.

leo’s barbeque: hopelessly devoted to ‘que. when it comes right down to it, it’s usually utterly pointless to write about and recommend barbeque joints because no matter who you talk to, everybody already has their own personal place that they think serves “the best barbeque in the world” and nothing will ever change their mind about that.

and when you think about it, that’s really a testament to not only the power of this culinary artform, but to the loyalties that the devotees to it have. when they find that one place that they believe was made specifically for them, they will defend it to the last log of hickory that has turned to ash.

i’m no different.

sure, it’s a part of my job as a food critic to try different places around town and while i might find a bbq place that i truly dig every now and then, always remember one thing: the bar that i am grading that ‘que against is a little shack off ne 36 and kelley called leo’s. to me, this is the best barbeque in okc.

housed in what looks to be a former gas station, leo’s is that quiet little okc institution that, while other rib joints tout their meats with athlete endorsements, white boy pseudo-blues music and jacked-up prices meant to justified the gentrified location, has happily puffed along for decades, dedicating themselves to the art and craft of smoking meats, no flair or dramatics needed.

their menu remains pretty static—ribs, beef brisket, hot links and bologna are the main staples—so it’s pretty pointless to “try something new.” find a favorite and make it your usual; mine are the ribs. so tender, so moist and with a little dip in leo’s special spicy sauce, so perfect.

for this review however, i ordered a dinner plate, splitting the usual helping of ribs with their brown sugar-sweet beef brisket ($10.29), along with sides of collard greens and fried okra, with a nice tall glass of their signature lemonade ($1.50) sweating off to the side.

on most nights, leo’s offers complimentary slow-cooked pintobeans(mixed with plenty of meat bits and drippings), as well as the tart and tangy cucumber salad, doused in vinegar and oil and complimented with sliced onions and peppers. the salad is just fine, but thosebeansare something you’ll be thinking about the next day, wishing there was a warm crock-pot full of them somewhere in your general vicinity. they’re a steal and a real meal unto themselves.

after a short wait, the waitress brings your order on flimsy paper-plates, smothered, covered and overloaded with generous servings of these majestic meat-stuffs, smoked all day and smelling like it.

the brisket is so juicy and unexpectedly sweet that sauce is practically unnecessary. use one of the slices of white bread as a shovel to cram every last dripping down your gullet. as for the sumptuous ribs...you’ve never had any like this, guaranteed. the phrase “fall off the bone” doesn’t even do it justice.

as for my sides, the fried okra was extremely fresh and the seasoned shell crunchy, while the collard greens full of vinegar and spite, harboring such a kick that it’s impossible not to shout “whooo-wheee!” after the first bite. i also recommend the mac and cheese and their extremely unique take on potato salad.

finally, as a tip, you just gotta—just gotta—save room for dessert. besides the bbq, another thing leo’s is famous for is their strawberry-banana cake ($3.50), a moist, glazy confectioner’s wet dream that i’m begging any friends and family to please serve at my next birthday or funeral, whichever comes first. this cake is almost worth a trip itself.

leo’s isn’t your typical tailgating corporate dad-in-the-backyard nonsense. this is a serious business for only the most serious of bbq connoisseurs, but never on those pretentious terms; it’s a down home secret that might not even be aware of how locally influential it is, something that could never duplicated, imitated, bottled-up or mass-produced. it’s is absolute perfection, and it’s the best bbq in the city.

but that’s just my opinion, of course.

duuuude. how have i missed this place all these years?!?!. ran by today to pick up a cake(per my husband's request. it's his favorite lunch spot) and left with the four serious sluggers.i couldn't help myself after smelling the place. the meal came with 8 huge ribs, 1 lb of brisket, 1/2 lb hot links, 1/2 lb of bologna, a pint of baked beans, a pint of potato salad, 4 slices of cake and 4 strawberry sodas(since the tea wouldn't travel as well).
first off. the meat does not come smothered in sauce like most places in okc tend to do. i actually prefer this, since the meat stands on its own. if you go in with the expectation of a smothered, messy bbq, you're gonna have a bad time!
the bologna was by far my favorite. and i'm not usually a bologna person! we got some burnt ends mixed into our brisket and it was like christmas morning finding them!! the ribs need zero sauce. they're that good. and the hot links are hoooot. the bakedbeansare from scratch and you can tell. the potato salad not over mustardy. you can tell a lot of love goes in to the food at leo's.
but the cake!! strawberry banana cake covered in a sweet glaze. it's perfection and the perfect end to a perfect meal. if you're in the area, or even within 30 miles, and want real deal bbq(which i haven't found anywhere else in okc) please stop in at leo's. you won't be disappointed!

good hood eats. leo's bbq is a place on the eastside i consider a good hood store eatery. i had leos bbq for lunch ribs, mustard potatoe salad, collard greens & bakedbeansfor only $10. when you order any dinner or lite dinner, you get a free slice of leo's infamous strawberry banana cake. i've eaten @ a lot of bbq sauces, but leos always stands out more than the other competitors.

tender, smoky bbq ribs. i have heard and read mostly good reviews of leo's. i finally got to try it for the first time last night. my date and i ordered leo's special -- an assortment of meats (ribs, brisket, hot links) with two sides and a slice of banana cake. our server kindly added an extra slice of cake and a serving of smoked chicken at no charge.

i judge bbq restaurants by their ribs, and these did not disappoint. they were tender and smoky. you can see the smoke ring on all parts of the rib. they have a bit less meat on them than at some other places in okc, but i'd rather have smaller portions of good-tasting ribs than larger portions of average-tasting ribs.

the bbq sauces make leo's stand out from other bbq places in okc. while i still like swadley's sauces the best, leo's sauces now rank second or third on my list. they are using nutmeg or allspice or something like that in their sauce, and i like how it compliments the meat. it would beat swadley's sauces if it weren't overpowering at times. as the saying goes, "a little dab'll do ya" with this sauce.

the sides and cake were okay. the bakedbeanswere the only disappointment - quite bland. i got my hopes up when i saw what looked like a piece of bacon mixed in, but it didn't add anything to make the bakedbeanstaste better.

overall, it's definitely worth a return trip.

the last time i was able to eat at leo’s was back in the mid-90s; i met my mom there after she had an errand to run in the okc area. i recall it was very good; it still is. i had lunch here today. i got there at 1145 and was seated immediately; 15 minutes later the place was packed. i purused the menu a couple minutes, and didn’t find what i was looking for, but when i asked my server she said that a combo of ribs and brisket was no problem. i got potato salad and bakedbeansfor my sides. those first: i am not a huge fan of potato salad, since people tend to put a lot of weird (to me) stuff in them; i like potatoes, mayo and mustard, and some pickle relish. this stuff was close to that, and i liked it a lot. the bakedbeanshad brisket in them, including a couple pieces of beef fat. yum yum yum. those were some of the best bbqbeansi’ve had. the brisket was outstanding; just the right amount of tender, a nice smoky flavor. the ribs were an 8 on a scale of 1 to jt’s. they didn’t have

leo's is a mixed bag. leo's has been around for a while. i never had it in the old days, but i've been told by several people that it used to be better. in fact, i've been told it was unbeatable. now, it's not the best bbq. that being said, it's not bad at all, as far as the meat is concerned. the meat is actually very good. the atmosphere is just right for a bbq place: smoky and no frills. the staff is very friendly. now for the negatives: the sauce is way too sweet for my liking. and the sides are nothing to write home about. thebeanswere alright, at best, and the baked potato was not baked enough. they also serve it as is, with just a tiny bit of butter to add flavor. the prices are a little high, but that's par for the course when it comes to bbq, unfortunately.
i would go back to leo's, and plan to in the near future. however, the meat is the main draw here. everything else, i could pass on. maybe getting it to go would be better. that way i could use head country bbq sauce instead of leo's.

i'll be back. the dining room closes at 7:30 but they let me in anyway at 7:35. i ordered the grand slam - three ribs, chopped brisket, four wedges of smoked bologna and two hot links. i got bakedbeansand potato salad. i mowed it down. the ribs were the standout by far and needed absolutely nothing. i was halfway done with them before i thought about sauce and tried a little out of obligation. not bad but sweeter than i like and had a hint of maybe cinnamon? the hotlinks were exceptional. i know, i know, they're bought in bulk and smoked with no particular skill but i'm a sucker for a good one and these were great. the bologna was as expected and the brisket was overly dry. sides were okay. i used my hot links in white bread for side dishes. the grand slam comes with cake and it's not to be missed.

no, i do not weigh 400 lbs.

best ribs in okc. i lived in okc many years ago. leo's was on n. kelley in those days. a couple of years ago i discovered the new location by accident and have not been disappointed.

the ribs are great, thebeansare good; the service is ok..seems to depend on which server you get. ours was forgetful and not very attentive.

i would still give leo's @ 4 harrison, bricktown, okc, three stars minimum just cuz the ribs are very good!
