filling and fresh.. whenever i come to legal sea foods, i always leave filled and satisfied. they serve simple, traditional fresh meals that are always very yummy and leave you rubbing your belly. i like getting the lobster with butter and all of there simple sides. i also enjoy the jasmine special, which is shrimp and brocoli with melted cheese on top. yum! and you can't go wrong with there fried shrimp, oysters or littleneck clams. i love it here!

typically excellent legal fare in a hidden harvard square location. the grilled chefs special was not only a palate pleaser but was an excellent value for the money. the outdoor patio is a must dine location this time of year.

raw oysters lived up to the claims, when fresh they usually do. had the wood grilled platter, 3 types of fish (chefs choice) that night were mahi mahi, swordfish and salmon which was the best piece of salmon i've ever had, it melted in my mouth, could have gotten away with not chewing. also came with shrimp and scallops and the scallops were sweet and cooked properly. the taste of that hickory from being wood grilled was pleasantly not overpowering, i could still taste the fish! as good as seafood is and as delicate a flavor fresh fish can have it is easy to overpower the flavor and they didn't do that, great job. i could taste that the only seasoning used was rock salt and cracked pepper, smart move to allow the dish to shine with only minimal seasoning. in addition to horseradish the oysters also come with this champagne mignonette with shallot sauce, interesting flavor, complimented the less briny oysters very well, but for the more briny oysters i recommend sticking with the horseradish. i will go back again while in town and recommend this spot to any seafood lover. beer and wine selections were great too.

amazingly gluten-free. if you are a celiac, gluten intolerant, or gluten sensitive, this is an amazing restaurant for you, especially if you like sea food. i requested a gluten-free menu. they immediately brought me a nice menu (not some paper sheet) with a huge list of appetizers, entrees, deserts, sides, salads, etc. after that i was brought warm, freshly made gluten free dinner rolls. they have much for celiacs to eat and are very kind about providing this. they can take almost anything and make it gluten free (since they have a chick pea flour substitue). overall, an amazing experience.

lega sea food iin harvard sq. ordered 2 of the lobster feasts...starts with a cup of chowder, then a lobster, muscles, ipswich, corn on the cob, kielbasa (a little out of place).

1) server brought main courses within 10 min of ordering, brought the chowder appetizer.
2) we asked for the chowder & the servers left the main course on the table. we then asked her to bring back the main course, and keep it warm, while we drank the soup.
3) the lobster et al was returned at room temp after we finished the appetizer.
4) presentation was great, with a lobster sitting upon a pile of shellfish. shellfish was sandy (not unusual), had been smashed by a hammer to in an effort to open mussels, clams and ipswich that had not opened in the steamer. the bottom of our plates were full of sand, shells and mashed meat which was useless to eat. i did mention the excessive amount of broke shells to the server who responded, "oh, well sometimes the kitchen breaks some when trying to make them open." i politely informed her that 1/2 of our couldn't be eaten because they were smashed into the meat and asked that she mention it to the kitchen.
5) i asked for a plate so i could cut the lobster on a plate which wasn't covered in sand and broken shells. the server asked me "what kind of plate." we also asked for refills of of iced teas ($2.95 each) which had sat empty for 10 minuted, during which time the server passed at least 3 times, and extra napkins, and cocktail forks, as note had been offered yet.
6) servers did do a great job of removing bowls of empty shells, quickly getting the check when we requested it, and attentively questioning that we enjoyed the dinner.

the food that wasn't destroyed (a little over half of it)was very good. the service was horrible.

landlubber/southern approves. i have lived most of my life in the midwest or the south so have never developed a strong taste for actual seafood. fish for me has generally been perch, trout or fried catfish. all good to be sure, but as a whole i avoid fish and seafood. having said that i loved legal seafood. on a recent trip to boston we tried several places around town (north boston for italian and locke ober among them) and for the most part really enjoyed our meals, but legal's swordfish made a real impression on me. not surprisingly no one in my area can compare and that leaves me wanting.
so if you get a chance take in a meal at legal. i do add the caveat that my preferences run towards things with legs and i would look sideways at a new englander trying to recommend good tex-mex.

fresh seafood.... cold fish ambience.. i've never had a bad piece of fish at legal - its the atmosphere i don't like. cold, corporate and rushed - you might as well be eating at some 2,000 room hotel in atlanta. there is another problem with legal, though their basic baked/broiled/steamed fish is almost always good, they suck when it comes to anything more complex - totally amateurish. again, nothing wrong with the ingredients, just the preparation.

the original legal seafoods founded by george berkowitz was great. the current legal chain reflects his sons' personalities - cold fish. prices are high and value is very low.

good but it comes at a price. expect great, fresh seafood but also remember that the wallet will be thinner afterward.
