soul food bliss. the gizzards are some of the best in the city. they are about the same as prices but this place actually flavor their batter. fried catfish is real good. slight amount of cornmeal seals the deal. highly reccommend.

this place is on point!! the fried pork chops blew my mind. i have never even liked gizzards, but this place changed that! give the turkey ribs a try too! all the sides are bomb. good prices, fast and friendly service. what more do you need? love you guys!!!

great staff, had a miscommunication with the order but they fixed it with another meal and for free. pretty good food i had the fried chicken and my hubby had the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and collard greens. all was very good and large potions we went home with more than enough for another dinner and lunch! great staff and seemed like lots of regulars stopping in for takeout! will be back in the future

this place is over rated. soul food? not on my level. rated best macaroni and cheese? it was dry

la’wan’s is very casual and it’s located in a strip mall on the corner of south tryon and arrowood. to start of our meal we went with the chicken liver and gizzards. where do i even start to describe this!?

the food was great the staff is amazing. definitely a cut above the rest!

real soul food fun!. la"wan's is a wonderful little place to get true soul food that is done well. we enjoyed fried fish, mac & cheese, collards, livers and onions, etc. for dinner. everything was delicious. the staff was exceptionally friendly and kind. i did get concerned about our food being a little delayed in coming. however, the delay was due to the food being made to order and it was truly worth the wait. i hope to use their catering service for an upcoming family event. la"wan is my kind of place that i recommend to anyone who wants a good soul food meal.

great soul food. this is great soul food. their friend chicken and collards are the best i have ever had. just so good.

our server was nothing short of wonderful: always available without being too invasive and perfectly kind without being overtly sweet (aka: “i’ll be totally nice to you so i get a good tip”). after paying for our meal at the counter, i spoke with another server who explained to me that the restaurant has been around for 11 years but only in this new location for a mere two months. i praised her food and she sweetly responded, “well, you come back. we’re open every day! til 9pm… at the least.”

they've moved ... still same great food. i was down in the steele creek area on saturday and was disappointed to find that la'wan's restaurant had closed. a couple of minutes later driving up tryon street, i was pleased to find that they were not closed and had only moved two blocks closer to town and on the other side of the street. they are now in the back of a new shopping center as opposed to the little strip mall they were previously in.

for those who remember the old location, as you will recall it was somewhat cramped and at the height of lunch hour traffic, you could hardly turn around much less find a seat. atmosphere was also somewhat dated but in a friendly way.

new restaurant takes care of that. somewhat bigger and better laid out it's more customer friendly. while the atmosphere is clean and modern, i'm not sure i totally like that. the old place did have a certain charm to it.

that said, the food is still great and has not changed. the chicken is still a good as i remembered as was the iced tea and okra.

i'm glad that they just moved and did not close. their closing would have been a big loss.

southern soul as good as it get's. oddly enough i was introduced to this place by one of my friends from the north and i'm glad he did.

soul food tneds to be rich and full and is ofter overcooked. la'wan's is definately not overcooked and is not as heavy of fat as some other soul food restaurant. the chicken is fantastic and if you are into fried chicken liver's, then this is your place. collard greens are often cooked to a mush but here, they still have texture and flavor. if you've never had collards cooked right, then you need to try these.

atmosphere is not fancy but rather more of a clean diner. lunch crowd is grenerally rather large but they do move their crowd so you won't have to wait long. you'll get a chance to meet la'wan because despite she is up in years, she makes a point of coming by and saying hello to everyone.

by the way, did i say the value of the meal was fantastic. you can't beat the prices.

fresh seafood!. most of the time, i do not finish my plate when i eat out. i am rather finicky and do not like to eat too much in one sitting. i had no choice but to finish my plate. the croaker was amazing. it was definitely fresh fish. most places have pretty smelly fish. fresh fish does not have a loud odor and their fish was odorless. i grew up with a pond in my back yard and i know fresh fish when i taste it. best food i have had in charlotte so far!

pretty good. thursday is the best day to go because they have smothered pork chops. i have been coming here for years and have enjoyed it a lot. the only problem is the last time i went i took friends from out of time and the pork chop was so tough and dry, we kept breaking our plastic silverware. i was really embarrassed.

very dissatisfied to say the least. chicken wings were decent.. but mac & cheese and potato salad was bad! i was shocked being that i read the reviews before i went. also the food had a odd sweetness to it??
