times picayune was right. i saw the review in the times picayune (http://blog.nola.com/brettanderson/2009/05/maya_and_la_macarena_serve_up.html) and decided to give it a try. i had the chicken soup which was really good- different from traditional chicken soup but delicious.
the passion fruit tea was also really good, similar to what i used to drink in brazil.
for my meal i had the carne asada, very tender and flavorful and tried the pupusas my girlfriend got- all delicious!
service wasfriendlyand definitely will be going back.

best kept secret in new orleans. we almost didn't stop in, but i am so glad we did. veryfriendlystaff who clearly take pride in their food. the food was delicious, especially the sweet corn tamale. we loved the tapas-sized options that gave us an opportunity to try some different items - all of which were great. we will definitely be back every time we come to the city.

favorite brunch. this place has my favorite brunch in town because the vegan and vegetarian options are just as yummy as the food for meat eaters. the huevos rancheros are the best i've ever had anywhere. my favorite is the fried yuca with chicharrones but those are normally a special menu item so if those aren't available i highly recommend the fresh guacamole & chips as an appetizer. the owner and staff are veryfriendlyand make you feel at home. this is a spot i always suggest to friends visiting new orleans because after a long weekend of drinking and indulging in heavy fried foods its nice to have some delicious, fresh, food that is still as unique as the city.

yummy!. we ordered take out tonight, and were overall pretty satisfied. i got the pupusa and chicken flauta plate, and my boyfriend got an order of the shrimp pupusas with the chicken soup. the portions were more than enough to leave us both full and satisfied. next time we order i will definitely be getting the shrimp pupusas, they were delicious. extra cheesy and a little spicy...much better than the original in my opinion. fast andfriendlydelivery person as well. we will be ordering from here again for sure.

friendly and fantastic!. i've been here twice: once for breakfast and once for a late lunch. both experiences were fantastic. service is wonderful, food is fresh and flavorful, prices are reasonable for the large portions. the owner is so welcoming andfriendly- he genuinely seems to want to make sure every costumer has a pleasant experience. don't miss the horchata! order extras on the plantains - i could make an entire meal of just those plantains - heavenly! will be back soon!

central american done right. i eat at la macarena whenever i can get across the river. i love this restaurant!!! the food is always excellent, and it is always fresh and obviously made from fresh and local ingrediants. it's not the place to go if you are in a hurry but if you have time to enjoy a leisurely meal it's a great option. as for mentioning manny (the owner) by name, it's no surprise that many people do as he takes the time to introduce himself and to make you feel special. last night we tried chicken soup filled with vegetables. along with the guacamole, homemade chips and the tilapia with garlic shrimp. the staff isfriendlyand helpful. definately worth the time and money!!!

excellent. for our final night in new orleans, we spent half an hour on a historic trolley from the french quarter in search of a an excellent, budget friendly, vegetarian dining experience. we were not disappointed. the proprietor was genuinelyfriendlyand helpful, as was our waitor, and both of us enjoyed the coziness and decor of the dining room. the vegetarian pupusas were delectable - neither too dry nor too greasy - and they were well complimented by the sauces. we both thoroughly enjoyed the yucca rellenas. all in all, it was an excellent experience. if we ever return, i'm looking forward to trying the guacamole, and maybe even saving room for the tres leche cake.

pupusas are a staple dish in el salvador, and la macarena pupuseria whips up vegan and vegetarian fare from el salvador that highlights this central american classic. pupusas are a less famous cousin of the arepa . it's more of a dumpling or pancake than an arepa, which has more in common with a sandwich than a dumpling. there sometimes are subtle differences in the corn flour used to prepare arepas and pupusas. it's safe to say that if you like one, you'd probably like the other. the staff at la macarena is fun andfriendlylike the decor. the menu offers tons of vegetarian and vegan options, and the daily specials often include a meatless option. the guacamole tostadita showcased fresh avocados and cilantro. the crushed red pepper adds an interesting spicy touch to a fantastic starter. there were a few different vegetarian combo plates. i sampled one with a tamale, plantains, black beans, cheese pupusas and curtido, a mexican/salvadoran cole slaw. the tamale was soft. the plantains w
