take a few turns down some streets away from the nearby griffith campus, and you come across one of the most unlikely finds in the history of unlikely finds. right in the middle of suburbia, the girls here have set up an amalgam of a cafe and food truck that is just asking to be put on instagram. a sister duo run this unique and characteristic joint, right next to the side of their father's coffee-cum-florist. i have never seen anything that quite looks like this. completely outside, with no walls, they put in a whole heap of astroturf, umbrellas, pot plants and low key seating, it all leads up to a brightly coloured trailer, in which has the entire kitchen operated in that small space. only a few table are around the place, but that does not stop it from getting either full up and/or having tables booked. when you have a reputation like this, well yeah!
service is top notch, and hard-working is not giving these two gals enough credit. every night, they are going at it to prepare the sublime produce for the next morning. mixed in with this is a lovely, conversational persona that is welcoming to all who come. this is even welcoming to dogs, and many are here during the business hours.
on their menu, it is mostly aimed at being healthy. fresh juices and smoothie are made in house (for those who want coffee, just pop into the adjacent florist - he doesgoodcoffee). each one is kept simple, and most of them are able to be bought for a $20 and still have some money to get a drink. for those who like to order the granola or the avocado on toast, or something in that vein it is perfect for you.
what else to get but the breakfast platter? for agoodprice, this order is one to be split between two people and with all that it offers, why else would you not order it? we are talking about several bits of sourdough toast, a generous helping of bacon, grilled tomatoes, grilled halloumi cheese, a couple of handfuls of salad greens (complete with dressing), a fried egg each, some smoked salmon, a small bowl of granola and a bit of greek yoghurt. this is called the kith n chow, so it is likely their signature order. i don't often urge a particular dish when discussing must do places, but one time i will nominate one for the brisbane bucket list - take a friend, or sweetheart, or someone else and order this one between you two. you won't regret it.
this is one that is a real feast for every conceivable sense, mostly for the eyes. in no way do they skimp on any of the items, and it is all the better for it. and every bit of it was absolutely tasty. the grilled tomatoes are presented not unlike a bunch of grapes, sweet and solidly cooked. the bacon was done to an excellent degree, utilising agoodcut of it that made it tender. haloumi was cut thick andgoodas always, the sourdough toast was perfectly taosted and the eggs fried just right - the yolk was runny when pricked and the quality of the produce says wonders. often i would take or leave the salad, often just seeing it as a bunch of green leaves. not this time, as the dressing was a sharp vinegar-based mixture mixed into the giant lot of greens. their smoked salmon was perfect as well. to finish it off, there was granola mixed with a few bits of fresh fruit, plus some greek yogurt. there is not much to say about that combination, but that it was crunchy and the yogurt was creamy. whether or not it is one of the best breakfasts that i have had recently, it most certainly is among the most memorable that i have ever done. you can bet that at the end, the two of us were satiated and satisfied.
once you strip away the quirkiness of the design, you are still left with agoodlittle eatery. if the term hidden gem was not over-used with its meaning, then i am proposing that it is the perfect way to describe kith n chow. equal parts cute with equal partsgoodservice, for anyone out there it is definitely worth a recommendation just on the experience alone. once you get through, the charming nature of it all should already win you over.
