worth the trip. we have been tokirby'snumerous times. they have a great happy hour with half price appetizers. the lamb chops are unbelievably good. fried pickles at a steakhouse. don't miss em. have had the tournados, trio tips and filet with several different sauces. all good. the rack of lamb is just as good as the appetizer. my wife has had the salmon and loved it. love the mashed potatoes and the salads and house dressings do not dissappoint. didn't really care for the creamed spinach. on all special occasions they have brought us free dessert.. one of our favorite steak houses in san antonio.

tone it down please.kirby'shas outstanding food and drink. my last trip was just to meet friends in the bar for cocktails before going to a show. we sat at the far end away from the live music but the 4 of us were literally driven out by the loudness.

mr. manager, please give some thought to whether the band could tone it down a little. it's really impossible to carry on a conversation when they are playing.

fave. now that they have chased the smokers out of the bar area, this has become the place i take out of town visitors for dinner. seems to be slightly less expensive than bobs chop and bohannans, but maybe that is just me. excellent bartender, but drink service in the restaurant can be a bit slow. good menu items but the daily special can be expensive so ask for the price before you order.

smoke. i admit to just detesting cigarette smoke. i don't understand why a place as nice as this has to continue to allow it, albeit just in the bar.

ate recently with a friend. steak with horseradish and salmon stuffed with lobster. everything was great.

holiday. took a friend to dinner there before christmas. the food was very good, but of course like most places in sa which pretend to be upscale it was over priced. we had a good waiter who had too many tables to attend to. a pretty good wine list, with many selections being affordably priced. my main complaint was the noise. that is the fault of the architect, not the kitchen.

my first recollection  of a steak as a child was at bonanza steakhouse which are all closed now. now that i think about it, was it even steak? i have been to all the mega chain steakhouses with saltgrass being my favorite. my first time at the old san francisco steakhouse is where i discovered the filet mignon and this has been my favorite steak ever since. my best fliet mignon was from the grey moss inn but that was many moons ago. even thoughkirby'sis technically a chain, it feels like we have the only one in the country because there are only 3 and all of them are in the great state of texas. i had no ideakirby'sstarted in dallas back in the 50's with the san antonio location being here only 9 years. roquefort filet  the first impression you get walking into this place is elegance and the dim lighting really sets the mood. they start you off with bread which was warm and fresh. i ordered the 10 oz  medium roquefort filet which is blue ribbon filet mignon with roquefort sauce....

all of the food we ordered was fantastic (house salads, peppercorn steak, filet mignon, sauteed mushrooms, mac & cheese)! steaks were cooked perfectly. mushrooms were great, but the mac & cheese topped with fried onion strings stole the show! the wine list is very extensive from full bottles, to half bottles, to by the glass. our waiter recommended a wine to us after we told him that we do not enjoy dry wines. he let us both sample the wine (without us asking to) to make sure we liked it and we were pleasantly surprised that we both liked it. service was very good. candlelight and live music playing added a fancy touch to the evening. although the food was great, the entrees were still quite pricey. we will keepkirby'sin mind for "special" occasions in the future.

over priced food at its finest.. my wife and i have been to a few of thekirby'slocations in the past. we ate at this location this past wednesday and the restaurant is extremely dimly lit, so much that some patrons have to use flashlights to read the menu. we had pretty good service, however the quality of food is not that great for what you pay. the apple crisp dessert is very underwhelming due to the lack of texture (no crunch) and too many sliced apples. also, the food is much too heavy and rich for my liking. the bearnaise on the steak medallions was so filling each bite felt like an entire meal. we both felt like we ate too much "fried chicken" when we left instead of steak and fish.

thank you, mr. leonard. being originally from dallas, i've been going to akirby'ssince i was a kid. this location is an awesome addition to the series. to callkirby'sa chain is just not accurate. although they do have signature dishes at their 5 separate locations each has a different chef driven menu, so your experience will differ at each location. (i'm actually not a huge fan of the woodfire grill location in dallas now. just too casual for me.)
but i'm a huge fan of chef javier davalos and the san antonio kirby's. all my favorites are here, and then some. 3 things stand out for me. fried asparagus (how good is that!), the maryland crab cake, and the tournedos bearnaise. a rich, decadent meal, accompanied by one of the fullest by-the-glass wine menus in san antonio.
the atmosphere is dark & intimate (hence my poor photos - i refuse to use flash in a restaurant - sorry 'bout that), with rich steakhouse genre textures throughout, but no more so than ruth's chris or fleming's.
service is indulgent, with your waiter wanting to give you the benefit of his training, management always makes a visit, and yes - prices are high across the board. you can get a cheaper steak in san antonio, but rarely at this level of quality and execution. for most of us, a night atkirby'sis a treat that should be experienced on those special occasions when only a truly well-executed steak dinner will do. it would really surprise me if you or your date came away truly disappointed.
special note:kirby'swent completely smoke-free on august 1st. (nice move, mr. leonard!)

had fun at kirby's. a recent visit with a large group of customers was not a problem for the wait staff at kirby's. everyone seemed to be pleased with their dinners. the wait staff was adequate, not outstanding.

the food was good but was "regular" steakhouse fare. nothing unique.kirby'shas "and seafood" in its name, but when the waiter was naming off their specials not a word was said about the seafood. most of us read between the lines on that one.

i ordered the prime rib and was really looking forward to it. the waiter came back 15 minutes later to tell me that they were out of it. one would think that in an upscale resaurant like this that the waiter would be informed of items that were not available.

great wine list. overall rating 7 - 10

real fine dining. i made a reservation for my family to dine at kirbys for my daughter's graduation dinner. it was our first time and we were all very impressed with every aspect of our dining experience. the service topped all that i've experienced in sa. food was sublime. it felt like we had not one waiter, but several. someone was always there to cater to our needs. the management acknowledged and welcomed our first visit. we will definately dine atkirby'sagain.
