experienced fine diners. the concierge at our hotel highly recommended the kingfish, after reading the somewhat mixed reviews( mostly about service issues), my wife and i decided to take a chance. we had dinner at the kingfish, tonight, our first night in town. we arrived just before 6pm and sat at the bar while we waited for our reservations.
duvi, the bartender was very friendly and experienced in the mixological arts.
within a few minutes of our reservation appointment we were led to a table near the back of the restaurant. we asked to be seated near the open windows to the street, so we could see all of the developing activity, and were happily accommodated.
what transpired from that point on was a culinary experience we have seldom experienced. michael, "mr. funky" (his pen name not ours), our server was given pretty much free reign to guide us through our dinner. we wanted a series of small plates to share, and the evenings one dinner special to share. we asked michael to also pair appropriate wines. beginning with the blue crab chop, an amazing crab cake, and the house champagne, our journey began. i have never been a fan of any crab cakes that i did not personally make myself (always with king crab). this crab cake was so moist, and creamy, my wife and i were totally amazed. there was so much richness from the amount of crab verses breading i do not know how it held together, but it did. the house champagne, poema cava was a perfect complement.
michale suggested the shrimp gaufre, sweet potato waffle pirogue filled with "new orleans style" bbq shrimp. the idea of bbq anything in fine dinning tottaly turned me off, but my wife persisted, and i am so glad she did. michael paired the gaufre with the malbec denario (another surprise -red with seafood) but it was beautiful and smooth and again was the perfect complement. the only dish less than astonishing was the squash lobster bisque. the squash diluted the taste of the lobster, but it was not bad. the entree, a shrimp and giant sea scollop special, was worth every penny, wonderfully seasoned and cooked to perfection, paired with pinot grigio terra d’oro.
the next trip to nola will have to include kingfish...don't miss it!
