the french quarter in westport (kc,mo). my husband and i went to jazz several weeks ago and we absolutely fell in love with the music, food, and atmosphere! the spicy food is not for the faint of stomach! everything we had had a little bit of kick to it, but that's how it is in new orleans! it brought me right back to the french quarter! the music was awesome swing/jazz, and we had a blast eating the $.50 oyster special that night!!! the fish in my dish was delish!!! =) and we plan on going back when our friends are in town to show them agoodtime!!! =)
this is a must try!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i was in town for my sorority retreat the previous weekend and jazz's was on our schedule for lunch. i was very excited at the thought of going because i am from louisiana andgoodcajun food is hard to come by unless you visit new orleans. i thought to myself a new orleans style place to eat i am going to love. so once arriving there i saw that the place had a real new orleans style set up and liked it. i browsed the menu and ordered boiled crawfish, which is my absolute favorite, and stuffed mushrooms. once receiving my order and beginning to eat i was automatically dissapointed. it was not even close to the cajun cuisine that i was use to and looked forward to having once again. the waitress asked how was my food and i said far from louisiana food. so she laughed and resumed her duties. the hospitable thing to do was for her to offer me another choice at no cost, offer me a refund, or ask would i like for her to get the manager. but that did not happen and i seriously did not want to stay there any longer than i had to. the only thing i enjoyed was my alcoholic beverage which i forget the name of. so i paid a total of 46$ including a 6$ gratuity. i was really dissapointed overall. i just wanted to share my experience to let others know who would be eating there to not have high expectations if you are use to real cajun quisine. and i have never written  a review ever before in my life and always believe that everyone deserve a chance. but i just could not get over this dissapointment. i really wanted my money back. oh well you live and you learn.

the food is nothing like louisiana food. my waiter was great. the food was horrible. this food is no where near the taste of louisiana food. the food was not seasoned at all. spice was over powering. i am from louisiana and i was offended that they are calling this food louisiana food. my kids even complained about the food. the jambalya and dirty rice was horrible, who puts tomato sauce or whateve that was inside of jambalya. i will never ever go back to this place and they are fooling their local people if they think this food taste like food from louisiana. people dont think that because the food is spicy that it isgoodand that thats what louisiana food is all about. louisiana food has great taste and this food was not tasty at all. also what place does not offer french fries.

complete disappointment. my sister and i took our mom here for her birthday. she loves jazz and that style food. we got there and had an hour wait. we didn't mind waiting because there were tons of stores to browse through. we were seated and loved the atmosphere however it went downhill fast. the live music wasgoodbut by no means was it jazz. the beatles doesn't exactly for the genre. the food was either cold or tasted like it was sitting in a warmer for a few days then had some chili powder sprinkled on top for heat. i noticed other people around us with the same reaction. it was so bad we took the food and dumped it in the trash and headed out the door. i would never recommend this place to anyone.

menu designed to take your money. waiter seemed to rush us with only 5 other people in the restaurant. dont have regular french fries on the menu. extra charge for simple side substitutions. drinks are extremely expensive. apps were small and expensive. food wasgoodbut overall very pricey and not really worth it.

gluten free at jazz. jazz has a small gluten free menu compared to their full menu, but the fact that they have one counts for a lot. sadly it doesn't include any appetizers, so be prepared to be jealous of your friends who will be chowing down on delicious looking hush puppies.

i had the "not full order" blackened catfish. it was very flavorful and moist. for me the portion was just right, but for most people it would probably seem a little small. i usually take half of my food home for later but i ate my whole portion, and most of a side of sweet potato fries. the fish came on a bed of rice and was accompanied by agoodamount of veggies and a red potato. next time i'm looking forward to trying the blackened shrimp, or the grilled pork chop.

the atmosphere: typical dark, dingy bar, feel free to write on walls, crowded, loud

the service: fair, nothing to write home about, not friendly or unfriendly, he was just there

drinks: ok,goodselection of brews, beer on tap fine, wine was served in a tiny glass, margarita was flavorless

food: menu was obscure so you didn't know exactly what came with the meal, flavorless, on spicy side but it masked the true flavor, everything was fried and left you wanting more

in summary, it doesn't compare to authentic new orleans fare. we left full but disappointed.

still the best. cajun restaurants have come and gone in kansas city over the years, but jazz down on the corner of 39th and state line has stood the test of time. the reasons for this are many. the live music and wonderful atmosphere are great, but it's the food that keep people coming back.

we went in for dinner recently and even with almost unreasonably high expectations i've placed on jazz over the years, they continue to meet them. there are a few favorites of mine that i gravitate towards (the crawfish creole and crawfish etouffee are both tremendous), but from time to time i like to try new things. on my most recent trip in i had the chicken a la mer. this chicken "of the sea" dish was highly recommended and so i gave it a whirl. boy was i not disappointed. the parmesan cream sauce had reallygooddepth of flavor, and the sea food really stood out and complimented the chicken. now i've got 3 dishes i have on my favorites list, and now i can't just flip a coin. maybe i'll need to go back more often....
