important: japonaise no longer sells donuts. after a long walk in search of fried dough, i was slightly disappointed. however, the pastries are delicious enough to warrant the trip. my tasty azuki cream was a sweetened croissantfilledwith whipped cream and bean paste dusted in powdered sugar. they have a large selection of frozen yogurt and summer drinks that also looked refreshing.

i had seen these curry doughnuts at a japonaise bakery's stand in jp one day and new i had to make it to the bakery get me some of this. this was so good. it was as rich as it looks. a gob of curry fried in a big ball of dough? fuuuck yes. azuki cream - $2.95 - "sweet read bean paste baked into a croissant shellfilledwith our light whip cream (one of our best sellers and a must try!)" this may please some crowds (much the way cannolis do ), but i found it too sweet and i thought the pastry dough was dry flaky instead of either moist flaky or dense or fluffy or any of the good options. i left this picture in just because i like the guy in the reflection you can see watching me take this picture. ham & egg roll - $2.35 - ham roll with egg salad this was pretty great. the dough was soft and buttery. it could be a fun (and cheap!) way to have an egg and cheese breakfast sandwich each morning. americano rating: 6/10 - not their forte but gets the job done.

in my adolescence, my father, a baguette aficionado, took me to japonaise bakery to buy baguettes . like clockwork, he would always use french bread for his lunch sandwiches. on sundays, he would have the ends of the baguette with a bit of butter or brie with a coffee. as i salivated at japonaise's glass counter, my dad realized i wouldn't leave without my own little treat and he let me choose one item to enjoy. i picked a slice black forest cake. i remember it being super chocolately. the cake was adorned with chocolate shavings on the exterior, fluffy from the whipped cream and slightly tart from fruit filling. japonaise serves french pastries with a japanese twist and the first location has been in the brookline area since 1985. we went on a japonaise bender and purchased a nice variety of items for a proper tasting. we picked up several azuki creams, a croissant baked with sweet red beans (azuki),filledwith light whip cream and dusted with powdered sugar. by suggestion of the cou
