ooty: i have always been a bhakt oftamilcuisine be it any of their regional styles, whether kongunadu (salem, coimbatore, avinasi etc) ... or pandya nadu (chettinad, madurai etc...) or chola nadu (chidambaram, kumbakonam etc..).. or any other... i just need to find one authentictamilstyle restaurant and i am sure to barge in 😊...

we had just driven down to ooty, it was late afternoon and we were hungry ... while parking in the main town area, just got to see ‘junior kupanna’ on the opposite side and without much a do we headed right in .. now junior kupanna is a well known restaurant chain intamilnadu.. although primarily serving kongu nadu style they serve a mix of othertamilregional specialities as well..

we ordered mutton fry, mutton biriyani, porotta & chicken kothu parotta ...which were served promptly along with generous servings of mutton kuzhambu (curry) and onion-curd (raita).. the aroma was overwhelming, the taste amazing and for the rest i am at a loss of word.. i will let pictures do the talking....

cheers!

i can say that this place got decent food, you can give a try whenever you visit ooty and are looking fortamilnadu style food. it will be the best option. my visit was pretty decent and i didn't have any bitter moments. the service and food both are pretty good.

what i have tried :
vanjaram fish fry(awesome)
chicken pallipalayam (very good)
chicken chukka (below average)
mutton pepper fry (very good)
madhurai style chicken and mutton kari dosas (awesome and must try)
srilankan style kothu parotta (very good)
chicken and mutton biryanis (awesome)

i can give a big thumbs up to starters, kari dosas and biryani. must try. service could have been better, overall a great experience.

food - 4.5/5
service - 3.5/5

food - 2.5/5
ambience- 3.5/5 ( crowdy, market place sorts)
hygiene- 3/5 ( washroom was dirty and hotel premises okeish)
service - 2/5 ( particularly for the lady who deliberately was making fun of ascent we asked a food.)
price - 2/5 ( exorbitant for the quality served)
parking - 3/5 ( difficult to get in this area)

fire safety- located on ground floor. no visible secondary exit. no visible fire safety device. no blockers at exit points.

this place was in my list to try out for authentictamilstyle food and we though to give a try. but the experience started real bad with very unnecessary kind of rude and kind of xenophobic behavior from the staff.

all we asked was what is contained in a particulartamildish, by pointing out, this lady asked us to repeat the correct pronunciation in the "right" way. with no disrespect meant to anyone., ofcourse the perfect t dialect can not be expected from a tourist visiting ooty right?

although she understood what  we ordered and the native ascent difference was obvious, instead of being helpful towards the customer, i did not need language lesson there.

cut to that we ordered, naadu chicken fry, which was nothing but a concoction of meat that was not the skinned properly and about 60% of meat was fat and meat that is generally discarded. and it costed 240.

chicken gravy was also similar and although the gravy was decent, chicken pieces were same.

we had a ordered a veg meal by explaining with great difficulty that was okeish and we got two extra bowl of curd as compliment . lol

kotthu paratha that is famous here, i ordered too. it was okiesh and definitely had better ones in bangalore. and for the price of 250, i could have 3 actually.

i went to savour some authentictamildishes and not just i was disappointed at the food quality and also the pathetic and about xenophobic service.

think before you step in.

hotel junior kuppanna is a 50 year old legacy chain of restaurants spread intamilnadu and karnataka.
i happened to visit their ooty restaurant recently.
this chain is rated high and known for its south indian non-vegetarian delicacies.
true to its legacy, the food that we had was quite tasty and chicken dishes quite succulent. all dishes are served in typical south indian style on a banana leaf. the curries are spicy but not overwhelming. chapatis though were made of 'maida', which we (family of 4) didn't like.

the service was slow in spite of average rush and prices were bit on higher side. also, considering the kitchen was visible at the far end of the restaurant, it was easy for everyone to see that hygiene wasn't up to the mark. but that doesn't mean it was poor. i would rate it acceptable.

i would consider a 2nd visit just for the taste. fortunately, i have a franchise close to my home.

coming to the ratings:

location: a 5! right on commercial road, 60-70 meters from charing cross, ooty.

taste: a 4.. good on the palate.. but not the best.

ambiance: a 3.7.. plain white interiors with simple table-chair arrangement.

service: a 3.5.. slow even in off peak hours.

price: a 3.3.. high for the overall package.
