maybe i'm a bit biased because this is one of mygreatfriend's brother's new spot but who cares! hokey poke is cape town's first dedicated poke bar. it is mainly seafood based - if you're a sashimi lover like me, i'd be surprised if you haven't been here yet!walking inside you are given the sense of being inside a restaurant in the land of oriental cuisine, with its cool, white-tiled interior. my dear friend katie and i tried poke bowl #3 which involved tuna sashimi, edamame beans, mango, an oriental dressing (i think it contained ponzu), a bit of sriracha mayo and other yummy things. i'm not one usually to mix fruit with savoury and mango sounded weird however i'm trying to adopt an approach of trying new things out of my comfort zone. well, i'm so glad i did. the bursts of mango flavour - my favourite fruit - did the dish wonders. it was sensational, fresh and i enjoyed every bite. there are other weird and wonderful, new and interesting things on the menu that i would like to try. thank you, max, for bringing this gem into the heart of cape town! if you have not been yet, please do give them a go, cape tonians and foreigners. who doesn't love a cheeky burst of oriental asia to liven up their day? i know i do. do hokey poke and turn your day around for the better.
