worst customer service i've ever experienced. went in to guasaca tonight and ordered the "signature" steak arepa. i asked for pico on my arepa and the guy serving it said "we can't do that." i said "i don't mind paying extra for it." he said that the signature arepa only comes with 3 sides. i said well then just give me a regular steak, put everything on it you would put on the signature and add some pico. he said "we don't want the arepas to be filled so much they're overflowing and that he could put it on the side." "shouldn't whether it's overflowing be my problem?" i finally get up to the front counter (still with no pico) and ask the cashier for some pico on my arepa...."sure no problem" was the response. by thattimehe had filled a side cup of pico and put it on the tray.
very rude service. i will never go back there again. just save your money and go to chipotle...it's more food, better food, cheaper, and the customer can actually get what he wants.

interesting food, good experience for lunch. what an interesting, and delicious, experience. we chose to go with a bowl approach with white rice, meat, & toppings, with sauces and an arepa on the side rather than the "pocket sandwich" approach.

the arepa is like a corn pancake with a pocket - in fact, it very much reminds me of the fried cornbread "fritters" my mother used to make - makes an ol' southern boy tearup a little, but i digress. the corn taste is prevalent, so i'd rather not have it encompass the entire mixture on every bite, but add it a little at atime- add to the bowl as a side for $1.

both the pork and the spicy, shredded beef were excellent - full of flavor and very tender. the toppings were all fresh tasting - pico de gallo, white cheese, black beans, carmalized onions (i very highly recommend these bad boys), plantains, guacamole, and more. the combination of flavors is amazing, and then you add sauces - cilantro, mustard, and the red spicy one (great on the shredded beef) - it just gets better. the white rice (i passed on the brown rice - i rarely try to eat the healthy stuff at lunch) is loaded with peas and corn - so cool.

the folks here are as friendly and helpful as i encountered in a while - i asked, they answered. the place is in a multi-use center off lake boone trail, and a little difficult to find at first, and parking is simply a mess at peak times - but it is worth it. the restaurant is basically a modern, but rather spartan, setup - plastic plates and utensils - semi-cafeteria setup - chairs that encourage quick meals - but it is worth it - a fun trip, good food, nice folks.

when i go back to raleigh, and i will, this will be one of the reasons.

i love guasaca!. guasaca is one of my favorite restaurants in raleigh. the food is amazing! i've tried all of the signature arepas except the fish and have thoroughly enjoyed every one of them. everything tastes fresh and the flavors blend marvelously. if the line isn't long, you can get your food very quickly, always nice. the place is very clean and the staff has been wonderful. they even replaced one of my coworker's arepas for free when a jerk let the door to the outdoor seating area slam into her tray, causing her to drop her entire lunch on the ground. i thought that was classy.

i typically get a mechada and a veggie arepa with a drink and am pleasantly full afterwards. the sauce that comes with the mechada, the red sauce, has a really excellent kick to it. and leaves a pleasant burn in the back of your throat, one of the few truly spicy latin american foods i've had in raleigh.

if you like latin american food, give guasaca a try! but you might want to avoid peak weekday lunchtime- it can get really crowded and they sometimes run out of tables.

i was an arepa virgin (venezuela bread) and very happy with the overall taste, flavor and food. let them know its your firsttimeand they go out of their way to let you try items.

we ended up with a pork, steak and fish arepa and we loved the steak and pork.

make sure to try the mustard and cilantro sauce- they are fabulous.

hopelessly devoted. if the thought of lunch crosses my mind, guasaca is always part of the internal conversation between my brain and stomach. a very filling arepa with a side of plantains for under 6 bucks? there is no better deal. and it is all tasty, even though 99% of thetimei get the mechada arepa. as a bonus, the people who work here are always in a great mood and eager to please.
