came here for the board games but unfortunately they had packed up for the year (2016), however there was one guy working who was happy to bring them out for us, which i thought was really nice of him! we didn’t want to be a hassle though so decided to just drink and chat.

it is such a small bar so there was only one empty table right next to the bathroom, which was a little too close for my liking. the aforementioned guy came to take our order being his usual friendly self, but he actually never came back with our drinks. not until space opened and we relocated ourselves to the bar, did he realize we still hadn’t received our drinks 😅 (he had forgotten but all good as he speedily attended to us once he found out).

we enjoyed our drinks and the vibe, and could chat a while without feeling rushed. but i can imagine it’d be absolutely packed fri and sat nights as it’s so tiny!

this bar is such a great little hideaway bar, i absolutely adore it! you would never know it's there unless you were shown! (those are the best bars though)
we had some bar nuts which were lovely and toasties are also available if you are peckish.
i had 'the (pine) apple of my rye' (pictured), the gin and pineapple works so well together, i highly recommend. the knickerbocker is also a great choice if you don't have much of a sweet tooth.
over all a great casual ambiance, friendly bar staff and inventive drinks.
good luck finding it though!

this little hidden bar was so cozy and rustics, with board games and cards to play. we end up playing uno while having drinks for change.

the bar service was great as the staff were very friendly and helpful.

oh my gosh! i fall in love with this place every single time. wednesday night catch up with a girlfriend at grandma's. packed out as usual, seating can be very sparring at the best of times, even for a wednesday evening. got a seat up against the wall with the music blurring, it was almost impossible to hear each other at times. it's a small venue, that has a rustic feel to it. unmatching seating and doilies, and knitted quilts to give you that feel like you are at your grandma's place.
the cocktail menu is extensive and wine selection is splendid. there is so much to love about this place! great place to chill and catch up over vino and mixed nuts, leaving all your woes at the front door after a long day at work (or whatever you've been doing), while you soak up the atmosphere of the place, sipping on cocktail or other forms of beverage. however, if you are hungry, this place doesn't really sell food apart from nibble mixed nuts and jaffles. so if you want something sustainable, it's best you come here not on an empty stomach but filed up to help you soak up the alcohol.

i was brought here by a friend and i seriously didn't expect such a hidden gem to exist. it's very tiny but extremely cosy, not to mention the bartenders are true performers as they shake up fancy (and flaming) cocktails.

checked out this place last night with my friend for pre-drinks and it is such a quaint little place. it is a little hidden, we wouldn't have found it without the street address. it's right around the corner from hotel sweeneys.
we were surprised there was table service, perhaps it was because it's quiet monday night. the first thing we thought was that it would be a brilliant place for a first date. however, the only food they offered are jaffles and some bar snacks.
we ordered the chicken jaffles ($8), which were nicely toasted and fulfilling.
the drinks were obviously the star of the establishment. we got man made ($18) and passion fruit cosmo ($17). both were delicious and strong.
overall, a really comfortable place with great drinks and friendly staff.

walking in it very much felt like being at grandma's - retro furniture and drinks on doileys. very professional staff though and a great range of cocktails. an excellent place to stop for a drink and a chat.

fantastic atmosphere, friendly staff and amazing cocktails! finding the place is a little tricky as you need to enter a little stairwell area first and then go down some stairs. it is certainly worth that tiny bit of a search though!

earl gray marteani - a must!. cocktails 10/10. walking down the stairs into this basement bar, i put on a hipster grandma cap and added a spring to my step. dollies and knitted blankets were a plenty and my fellow mates would write a menu to humor customers and distract them from ordering! most definitely gets busy in the evenings as the space is small, but it is well worth a standing space. relaxed yet buzzing atmosphere, just my cup of tea! ;)

conveniently, also on clarence street is a little place called grandma’s bar. grandma’s is a secluded little hideaway found through an easily-missed doorway and passage. walking down the narrow stairs past the giant moose-head decorated with garlands of knitting, you find yourself in a room not too dissimilar to one in your nanna’s house. which is isn’t always a bad thing. the aim of grandma’s bar is to provide a home away from home, a familiar, nostalgic family that you can escape to. knitting baskets are strewn on side tables, crocheted blankets flung over the couch, and vintage floral chairs provide a decorative spot for you to kick back in.  grandma’s has around 70 rums available, and is largely cocktail focused. it has more spanish styles of rum, which are sweeter and stickier.  dark ‘n’ stormy ($17.00) while grandma’s has more of a cocktail focus, it is still worth a visit to check out their range of rums.      the rum diaries 288 bondi road, bondi nsw phone: (02) 9300 0440 web:

i’m sure a basement bar wasn’t where red riding hood was headed. if it had been, the big bad wolf would have contented himself on the rocking chair with a chicken jaffle and drinks.
