highly recommend it. we were treated to dinner here several months ago by our daughter and son-in-law. it was absolutely wonderful. service was very good. our waiter was very knowledgable of both the food and the wine list, and gave great service. dinner was delicious and we will be going back the next time we head to birmingham.

average. . i've been a number of times, with my supper clubs and husband. keep trying to figure what people see in it.
it is convenient for homewood residents.

delizioso, gianmarco!!!. we always have great food and good service. some servers go out of their way to ensure we have a great time! food beats that of many many other places!

great food, but take the waiter's attitude in stride. i have only been there one time (in april, 2010) and i was really impressed with the food. i sampled my friends' dishes and they were all very very good.
i did find our waiter borderline insulting. now i'm not used to fine dining and maybe i come across as such. but our waiter's tone and some remarks were so condescending. anyhow, i just ignored it and had a great time enjoying my meal. but in fairness, towards the end of the meal he did ease up and his attitude markedly improved. maybe he was just having a rough start (we did dine early at 6:30).
i will go back. i'll just probably ask for a different waiter.

best italian in town. i think gianmarco's is well worth the price and the service i have received has been phenomenal. you may have to dish out $20 for an entree if you want the best italian in birmingham. if you have a problem with that, i suggest you go dine in nyc with cindy. i'm sure it will be much less expensive and she seems to know so much about fine dining. she works at an opera house! once upon a time she ate with a real critic! she even knows how to spell (thanks to the amazing education she received in "the city")! i'm all about negative reviews when a restaurant fails to meet expectations. however, i don't value the pompous attitude and opinions of people who attempt to compare restaurants in birmingham with those in manhattan, la, atlanta, etc. for these reasons, i don't buy jim's conspiracy theory and i don't blame john for his response.

to sct87. reference your comment:

"however, i don't value the pompous attitude and opinions of people who attempt to compare restaurants in birmingham with those in manhattan, la, atlanta, etc."

and we would care why to any opinion other than your view of the food you ate and the service you received the night you went????

you have 9 reviews, and yet you have pronounced gianmarco;s the best italian in birmingham. how does 9 reviews generate that opinion.

i think gianmarco's is wonderful!!!!! best in birmingham, al. still not sure until i make all the rounds.

your personal attacks are exactly what i'm talking about. they have no place here, in my view, and it saddens me that urbanspoon endorses the kind of personal attacks you have just made. they are useless and serve only to stereotype you..........and this isn't about you; it should be about how you perceived gianmarco's the night you went so others can make an informed dining out decision.

fundamentals of urbanspoon reviews. urbanspoon reviews are honestly made reviews based on a single, sometimes couple more visits and the chance to eat one or two items, they are nothing more than one persons opinion about that visit. yet what is laughable is that often someone out of no place, as in no prior reviews john, mounts a personal attack on a cindy about her review on say, gianmarco's. somehow this john happened to notice a 'dislike' review yet has never contributed before????? nor has he ever contributed again (as of this writting) on urbanspoon since his bashing of cindy in 2009. and sadly, personal attacks like is very ok with urbanspoon...i checked.
reviews are just that. but, john, i have to wonder, are you a friend of the owners of gianmarco?....did they have you come out 'from under your rock' to make this attack? was there a free meal involved?.......we're waiting, john!!!!
john i really like gianmarcos, but this attack on cindy makes me wonder if there are other people who have been attacked by 'friends of gianmarcos'. after all, unless you patronize gianmarco every night and try every entree every night, you really don't know if they are consistently good, do you john??????
people like john, in my view, cause people who might potentially review a restaurant as a dislike to shy away from doing so. this is making urbanspoon less credible as a source of reviews in my view.

fantastico!!!!!. located in a small, quasi run down strip mall, you enter through the bar into a true sicilian looking dining room, replica paintings and linen white table cloths.
but the food does all the talking.
each dish prepared as if you are the only one there.
my favorite is the seafood lasagna. it is so very very good. (not always available)
whatever the owners history is, they know how to make italian food.
i have visited three times; the last time i feel in love with their chilean sea bass.
my lady had her favorite, fettuccine alfredo with large shrimp (i was assured they weren't from the contaminated gulf of mexico.)
a little noisy, but so are all restaurants in 'sicilia'.
service is excellent!!
try it, you'll love it !!!!!!

wonderful italian. a neighborhood favorite of ours. the beef carpaccio is amazing, as is the cheese app and they have a special with goat cheese crusted leg of lamb, holy crap. do not order from the menu unti you have heard one of their specials. this is my favorite restaurant in birmingham.

recommend it:-). we ordered mushroom ravioli and the bone in rib eye special, which were both great. our appetizer, which was basically crostinis with a layered soft cheese ( i don't remember what it was called), was pretty good). i recommend reservations, although we were there early enough to get a two person high table in the bar. will definitely be back to try more dishes.

i would have to agree with cindy that the attitude of both the patrons and staff are a bit pompous, considering this is birmingham. that said, i believe they have the best food value in the city, which birmingham barely is.

very consistent and "a cut above" other italian restaurants in the area. great lunch menu--only on w, th, & fr. the meatballs are excellent and the tomato sauce is wonderful. the vodka-tomato sauces are really well done. superior wait staff--and the tiramisu is really the best around. the crab cake at gianmarco is a bow to southern cuisine, and not to be missed! the bar is well-stocked--enjoy!

great old-school italian. imagine that italian place you went to in your childhood. rich tomato meat sauces, crusty cheese toppings, white table cloths, and formal service all in a family atmosphere.

in the heart of the edgewood district of homewood. limited seating but always worth the wait, if you don't have reservations...

consistently wonderful.. gian marco's has made a charge in the last few years right into what i call the holy triumvirate of great birmingham restaurants: highlands, hot n hot, and gian marco's. i am shocked by a few of the negative reviews. gian marco's has been nothing but incredible every time i've been there, and what really stands out to me is the chef's creativity. it's the hardest reservation to come by in the town for a good reason. the quality of food served is second to none, and the atmosphere is laid back in comparison to its other fine dining counterparts in the city. this place is truly worth your time, taste-buds, and money.

the lincoln center rock. the rock i crawled from was called the metropolitan opera house in which i worked as an assistant to one of the world's top maestro's. we ate out every single day and frequently with frank bruni which was the cities top food critic. i can assure you that i know when someone is less talented than the people with attitude that run this place. the food is hit or miss as one will find after speaking with the many people who have dined there and an attitude that is laughable. your spelling is off for someone from the city. i believe definitely is spelled different than what you wrote.

not good enough for the attitude. i am from manhattan and these guys are trying to act like they are so much better than they really are. mediocre food priced more than it's worth.
