food 4.0
service 3.5
ambience 3.5

a first for brisbane and people were raving about messina coming to brisvegas. the ambience is cool and relaxed and a great cosy place to enjoy your favorite ice cream with friends and family. there are lots of choices and the flavours are quite out there. the staff member we had waa vwry helpful and made us try many flavours to help us pick what to get.

they have great combinations, however some are acquired taste. not all flavours are for everyone and some are a bit subtle on the flavour.

we had five scoops. the pistachio praline, coconut lyche and straberries cream were my favorites. the poached fig was okay. the salted caramel flavours weregoodtoo.

great place to visit, and would love to try their cakes as well. given the hype though, not necessarily the best gelato in town.

*3.5/5

i walked into the store thinking of the amazing gelato i had in melbourne, and was sadly disappointed. maybe i expected too much from all the hype, but the gelato just wasn't that good.

i tried the apple pie and the tiramisu. i'm not a fan of tiramisu in general so i can't really make a judgement on that. however, the apple pie, while tasting very much like apple pie and containing nice chunks of pastry and apples, was sickly sweet and thoroughly mediocre.

so, not bad, but not fantastic either.

never meet your heroes.

edit: went again and tried the yoghurt and caramel, milk chocolate with choc peanut fudge and passionfruit cheesecake. really liked the yogurt one, peanut wasgoodand passionfruit was too tangy and didn't have enough cheesecake flavour.

great selection of ice cream. decided to try the non-conventional flavours and got the weekly ice cream (mine was white chocolate chip cereal and milk ice cream) and it was bloodygoodwith chunks of caramel bites. a little on the pricey end just a single scoop but i definitely think it’s worth it, coming from someone who doesn’t eat desserts in general

one of the best gelato in town. they are quite generous by giving a large scoop of ice cream. i had two flavours (i forgot the name of the first one whereas the other is gianduia). gianduia is agoodchoice if you like the combination of chocolate and nutty flavour. hazelnut flavour is strong. there is also enough space for people sitting and enjoying their ice cream. great place!

love the variety of flavours and the gluten free options! thegoodthing is that they let you try/taste before you buy. usually i go for at least 2 or 3 scoops since it’s more for value but i find myself not being able to actually eat all of it so 2 scoops is honestly the most i ever need.

i love the choc mint flavour! but that might just be because i’m a choc mint lover. their choc pieces are on the bigger side though.

also tried their vanilla nougat and the nougat pieces were imo also a bit on the bigger side. i guess it does give that authentic feel but i don’t enjoy crunching through whole bits while my ice cream is melting away :”(

their chocolate flavours are sooooooo rich. definitely wouldn’t recommend grabbing more than 1 scoop of chocolate in one go. best to break it up with less rich, refreshing flavours like grapefruit sorbet (fave!!)

i feel like messina isn't what it used to be and rests on their laurels a bit, now that they're a large chain. i first discovered these guys when i lived nearby in fitzroy, where the flavours on the standard menu were a bit up and down but the crazy blackboard weekly specials were always a winner. since then i've visited several up and down the east coast and it feels like the flavours are more mainstream and not executed as well. that said, they're stillgoodbut the prices are a tad high for what you get as the scoop sizes are on the small side. service has always been mixed, with staff usually being nice but really rushing you and always serving people well out of turn.

i found this store no rushing and staff quite friendly in comparison but scoops small and flavours a bit average. not sure why there is a huge dining room that customers can't use, presumably a function area but would be nice to let people use it when it's not needed. my best tip here is to go for the blackboard flavours first for value and a point of difference and avoid the popular flavours recommended as they're overrated e.g. don't get salted caramel as the flavour is weak and not salty, go for the caramelised white choc.

holy gelato i think this is the best ive had! it actually reminds me of the gelato in rome, both taste and texture. i previously have been a cremona addictee, but now messina has my heart. the khaleesi, the pecan do it and both the passionfruit and mango sorbet delightful and the strawberry and cream was my fave. the take home pack we ordered via deliveroo was value for money sooogoodthat we got 6 serves out of it! in the cups you can get for free in delivery. happy days

tonight we were wondering around south brisbane and facing the big line in front of this place we couldn't just keep walking without checking what was the fuzz about.

after checking the available flavours we opted for the pannacota and the miso n malt.

the pannacota was just amazing, creamy, not too sweet and the fig and caramel present gave it a nice texture and flavour would rate it a 5 out of 5. the miso n malt on the other hand was extremely sweet and the bits of fudge in the ice cream have it a nice texture but also made it even sweeter, there was a nice malt flavour present and the ice cream was probably the creamiest one i have tried in brisbane but the sweetness made it be a let down. this one i would rate a 3.5 out of 5.

overall they have reallygoodice cream and definitely deserve the line of people that was waiting to order.

do you know how hard it is to find an interesting sorbet option that isn't fruit when you're lactose intolerant? incredibly. not that i don't enjoy fruit sorbets, but every now and again i want something else. that something else is salted coconut and mango salsa or their mind bogginglygoodpandan and coconut ice sorbet. imagine my surprise when there's an entire cabinet of the goods! i like that they generously pack down your choice into cup or cone. i dislike their random queuing but what else can you expect where everyone wants to oggle over the myriad of choices?

the range of flavours was exciting, though i think the specials board seemed to be erring on the side of safe rather than crazy innovative (e.g. 'milkshake') & i would have like to see some classic but unusual flavours like flior di latte, liquorice, green tea & black sesame. i chose panacotta with fig jam & amaretto & nougat. the former was my favourite, the latter a little sweet to my tastes. the ice cream isgoodbut not the greatest i've ever had & the cone was just an ordinary cone. service & seating fine when relatively quiet on a weekday. i will return to sample more.

very popular spot.goodvarieties of choice on the flavor. does not taste like the traditional ice-cream. it is more dense and i have been told that is because there is no water added in it. salted caramel coffee flavor is a charm. banana froster is a must for banana and cinnamon lover
