i was actually across the road at the park watching rugby and drove past this odd little set of shops twice looking for a coffee place before giving up and checking zomato for a nearby coffee places :-)  the small wooden tables outside give away its location and inside it immediately impresses with a funky up to date fit out reminiscent of a sandringhamised version of dear jervois...  super friendly staff, lots of appetising cabinet food and great coffee what else do you need?

geeks is my favourite cafe at the moment. they have great coffee, exceptional service and the food is delicious.
the cafe's not in the best spot, but with a new playground opening across the road on the corner of sainsbury and morningside drive i feel like summer is going to be crazy busy for the geeks crew.
the first time i came to geeks, not long after they opened, i tried the pork salad. the decent portion of roast vegetables, not too much salad, apple, pork pattie & the beautiful presentation definitely impressed me & was very reasonably priced at $17.
i've returned numerous times for their iced coffee, which is delicious & recently for their waffles, which are huge! my kids shared a plate of their banana granola waffles which come with maple peanut butter, maple syrup, ice cream & are topped with almonds & pistachios. at $15 this huge plate of deliciousness is a steal! i'm not usually a fan of waffles, but would (& will) order these again.
geeks also have the cutest fluffies for your little ones. my two were most impressed when two little cups with sprinkles on top & marshmallows on the side came out.
the service is the icing on the cake. the guys are friendly & really accommodating. i came half an hour after the kitchen had closed & they still made us a plate of waffles. so grateful for this as my kids would have been disappointed after i promised them delicious banana waffles after school!
highly recommend you check these guys out. a great addition to the st luke's/mt albert/morningside area.

my friend and i dined here on a whim today. when we rocked up, it was 2:50pm so they only had 10 minutes til their kitchen was closed but they were very accommodating. my friend and i ordered their homemade pumpkin soup with toasted ciabatta and fries on the side. their pumpkin soup was divine. it was smooth and creamy and i loved the texture of the pumpkin seeds which was a pleasantly surprising addition. it went perfectly with the crusty toasted ciabatta. i'm really picky about my pumpkin soup and i have to say that they won me over and we'll definitely be back to sample more from their menu!

my food buddy recommend this place for brekkie. we arrive early on a saturday morning. normally it's packed!!

it was very interest egg benedict i've order. it's slices of potato stacked together instead of toast. topped with pokeno bacon and pouch egg. combination of the beetroot purée was just right.

lovely service, very friendly staff.

they also have vegetarian option. nice coffee. neatly decorated cafe!

it took me a few attempts to finally make it here, trying two weeks in a row to make it in on a monday (they're closed monday's, but my busy work schedule caused me to forget this and try a second time) - i finally scored off a saturday and made it top priority to get here!
first off, the decor is outstanding. so light and airy for such a small space, plus the bathrooms were so clean and different? i loved the black tiled walls!
back to the cafe - it was pretty busy so we were seated at a big sharing table - perfect for a side of people watching with your morning coffee. the menus were simple and easy to read, i quickly made my mind up on the bacon bene, it was here that the cafe lost its half star, as we probably spent a good 5-10 minutes wondering if we were meant to go up and order, or if it was table service. eventually a lovely waiter came over and asked if we were ready to order.

i ordered the petite bene, as i'm wasn't the hungriest, and it was perfect. the bacon crunched perfectly with the soft potato base, and the beetroot purée balanced it all perfectly. i got to try my friends pumpkin soup and it was delicious, tasted fresh and just like something you'd make at home - not the normal preservative infused crap i'm used to being served. my other friend got a bagel, but i was refused any of that - so judging from how fast it disappeared im assuming that was top standard too?

we ordered a second round of flat whites after our breakfast, and they were just as soft and creamy as the first. so nice to have somewhere offering red rabbit in auckland, as they're one of my favourite nz roasters right now.

overall, a++ to everything, only improvement would be if waiting staff explained it was table service when menus were placed down, but that's an easy thing to overlook when everything else is so good.

i came here for breakfast the other morning after hearing about this place through a friend.
i liked the interior, very similar to dear jervois (pretty sure the same owners) and they made good use of the small space.
the breakfast menu is quite short, pretty much just granola, eggs benedict, bagels and waffles - although they do have a few varieties of each (which makes up for it).
i opted for the salmon gravlax eggs benedict which came on a layered potato gratin.
the thing that stops me from giving this place a higher rating was the potato gratin.
the eggs, salmon and condiments were great but both my potato gratin and my partner's (he had the bacon hock version of the eggs bene) were undercooked in the middle :(
it was still edible but just needed a little more cooking to make it soft and delicious.
even though this was disappointing this place was cute and the staff really sweet so i will probably be back to give it another go...

the auckland cafe scene continues to amaze me as more and more chic cafes open around the different neighbourhoods. our latest venture took us out to sandingham where we had brunch at geeks on sainsbury. coming out on a chilly saturday, the last thing we expected was a full house at 9:30am! we opted for the recently vacated table outside and braved the cool breeze rather than wait an extra thirty minutes for a table inside.

plenty of nice options on the all day breakfast menu that caters for gluten-free and vegetarian diets and if you want to sink your teeth in a hearty beef burger at 10 in the morning, they are happy to serve you items from the lunch menu.

so this is what we ordered:

granola | a healthy combination of assorted grains, nuts and fruit, this was served with greek yogurt and an optional side of milk.

pokeno bacon eggs benedict | poached eggs, bacon, kale and hollandaise on layered agria potatoes with a beetroot puree.

pan fried tofu eggs benedict | tofu, mushrooms, avocado, vine tomatoes, poached eggs and homemade chutney. this was also with layered agria potatoes.

pumpkin soup | house made soup served with ciabatta

banana and granola waffles | served with vanilla ice cream, maple peanut butter and caramel. served with an additional side of pokeno bacon.

beef burger | made with premium beef patty, caramelised onions, ricotta cheese, pickles and chutney, this was served with a side of shoestring fries.

we were impressed with the food presentation of our food, especially the eggs benedict. taste wise, nothing really stood out for my dining companions, but i personally really enjoyed my granola and the use of toasted white quinoa. the consensus around the table was that the eggs benedict needed more sauce because half way through the layered potato, they had run out of both the hollandaise sauce and beetroot puree.

coffee was yummy, service was slow but friendly and there is plenty of off-street parking in the area. keen to come back for a smoothie and salad!

we decided to go to geeks on sainsbury early on a saturday morning before it got too crowded. great decor, every fixture and furnishing was well thought out and all added to the overall ambiance.

great service, we were immediately seated, and were promptly served our drinks. a little under a half hour wait on food, but well worth it.  we ordered the petite eggs benedict with bacon, and the banana and granola waffles. everything was beautifully presented and generous serving sizes. the layered potato instead of a hash was a great idea, eggs were cooked perfectly and overall a good dish.  the waffles themselves were amazing and the toppings were all delicious and high quality. the only critique i could make was to caramelize the bananas (i would even pay more for this) as felt a bit plain with all the other components.

overall good food, the use of high quality ingredients and a small menu means every dish will be well executed and delicious. also i would like to emphasize the low prices were great for the standard of food presented. the coffee also lived up to its expectations, and would definitely go back again. well worth going.

we decided to go to geeks and sainsbury on a whim. it had been on the back of my mind and the name reminds me of the big bang theory! i could just imagine the waitors in lab coats measuring out the amount of coffee beans with a test tube. not quite! there's much to boast about their coffee lineup though. they serve coffee from wellington boutique roasters red rabbit co, famous for their labyrinth of flavours in a cup.

the first choice on the all day breakfast menu was granola. it sounded delicious with white quinoa, glazed strawberries, roasted almond with pumpkin seeds. nothing like the chew-til-your-temples-hurt type that i have in a box at home. that set the tone of being healthy over geeky. the eggs benedict had the option of pan fried tofu with poached eggs. heck, even the waffles had granola in the ingredients list.

the pork salad obviously was no normal salad, beautifully plated and garnished on top. the sunflower encrusted shell the a standout element. light but full of crunch, the house made chutney and shredded apple was tantalising to my sweet side.

the eggs benedict comes in the option of petit and regular so you can easily satisfy your brunch craving after a round of gym. again keeping it light, layered agria potato takes the normal place of a hash brown.

with an open bright space spilling out into the sunny outdoor setting, it's an attractive place to be all year round. the decor is determinedly geek chic. a blackboard diagram details how seriously they take their coffee extraction method, and shelves look like they belong on pinterest. they show the same dedication to their food. presentation is exact, pairings are purposeful.

it's a shame to hear that the shore could have boasted this cafe gem. while it reminds me of little king, it could easily take out the backsliding quality of the food there. service was a bit unsure - there were moments where i got excited by food coming my way, only to have the waiters step on their brakes. that however, was minor and played no part in the rest of the experience. geeks on sainsbury, you are doing great things for sandringham, looking forward to hearing more from you!

the coffee was excellent, the food was nothing special. it was unfortunate that the staff here seem completely without training; we were given no indication of at least a 50 minute wait time, a coffee order was not taken until our food order was, we were not offered further coffees throughout this wait time, the water at the table was not replenished once, coffee cups were not cleared away for the duration of our being there, there was a further five minute wait for the fourth member of our group to receive his food. not impressed.
