there's another clam shack near easton's beach that is underrated and does not get the recognition it deserves. flo's clam shack , with locations in middletown (on the newport line) and portsmouth, is one of my favorite summer dining destinations…especially when it comes to clams! first, let's talk about the clam cakes. we ordered a half dozen and were given seven by mistake. yup, we were off to a great start! there is nothing worse than eating an entire clam cake without any clams inside. i'm sure we have all experienced this feeling of disappointment. well, that's definitely not the case at flo's. these crispy, golden, deep-fried orbs were packed with plenty of clams. the center of the clam cakes tasted slightly dense in comparison to the competi

i have made quite a few trips to newport ri but have somehow managed to skip over one of the best dining options this tourist town has to offer: flo's clam shack . at first glimpse this place screams tourist trap but my newport native tour guide informed

flo's is not only famous, but it is also located near our hotel so one afternoon we decided to have clam cakes for lunch.  we stood in a short line at the outside window and ordered 6 clam cakes to go.  in 2 minutes i was handed a bag and we proceeded to an inside table where we enjoyed them.  the clam cakes were obviously not cooked to order, but were reasonably hot and pretty good though clam flavor lite

a newport classic with generous portions of fried seafood! lobster roll is served with mayo on the side and there isn't a version with butter. they do accept credit cards. there is a parking lot in the back, otherwise you will have to find street parking.

rubber clams no fish. today we went to "flo's clam shack" and based on it's reputation i expected greatness, what i received was nowhere near even satisfactory. this place is cash only so bring green backs or forget it.
i ordered the "famous clam plate" at $18.95 and my wife ordered a #7 fish sandwich, about $8.95. with (2) diet sodas. we were given our "flashing lobster" and we went up stairs, "no air conditioning", lucky it was a beautiful day. our "flashing lobster" buzzed and i went down stairs to get the food. i brought it back up and expected the best clams ever. the first clam was like rubber, ok bad clam, the next was the same, the third was the same, that's it i am about to bring the plate back and i look at my wife and she has a "batter sandwich with hardly any fish.
we bring both meals back and complain, and they say that we are the first "ever" to have this problem or complain!. i live near the ocean and i have had great clams before, and these were not. they said, "do i want my money back, i said no i want your famous clams and my wife a sandwich with fish in it.they give me a look like "who am i to complain" and make another two meals.
while i am waiting, i am looking around at the "great" articles on the walls,, and they are (10), (13) or more years old. if you are in newport ri and you want good food "do not go to flo's clam shack it is cash only, not worth your wait, no atmosphere "rip off"...and if you have to go to the bathroom, they have (2) old (male/ female) rooms. skip this place!

huge disappointment. stopped by for a snack and ordered their "world famous" stuffies and clam cakes... yuck on a plate... one piece of clam in seven cakes... seriously? pretty pathetic... same with the stuffies... no flavor... just mushy bread... i'm sure their raw bar upstairs is great... just pass on the stuffies and clam cakes

nice fresh seafood. this place is so popular in newport and for a good reason. their seafood is good and fresh. i had eaten here a couple of times and i had the sword fish it was excellent! their fried food is alright and fresh. one thing that bothered me is they cant do take out on their upstairs menu! its too bad. but anyway this place is pretty cool. when you go in though its a crowded little shack not too much room. but they have a lot of interesting things on the walls. the staff is good. nice place.

this native likes flo's. not only am i a native rhode islander, i am a native middletowner. (sorry newport but flo's is ours.) whenever i go back there, i stop at flo's for the clam cakes. they are the best. fried clams are great too. the lobster rolls, ok but not the reason for visiting. there are secrets to parking that i won't share.
