burger reviewed: the bronx
positives:
+ brioche bun:  the perfect level of soft squishableness without being soggy. it reminded me of suckling my mothers teet as an infant. i haven't been allowed to touch a woman's breast since, but if i had i'm sure that would be a fair comparison too.

+ cheese and bacon:  the bacon was the perfect amount of crispy, warmth and flavor. while the melty sticky texture of that cheese was heart stopping. figuratively and literally. these two ingredients could not be improved upon.

negatives:
- flavor imbalance:  overall when you taste the burger on a whole, the flavors just don't quite meld. each bite your tongue is left longing for some some sweet balance to your bite. i'm far from having a sweet tooth but between the mustard, pickles and lack of anything sweet, this burger just leaves you with too bitter an aftertaste.

- beef: this should be the greecy delicious hero of the dish. however the beef was just good but not amazing, another factor stopping this burger from reaching true iconic status.

summary: texturally this burger was fantastic and the flavor was nice but lacked balance. one of the better burgers i've tasted, yet it doesn't hold a finger to the current champion; the "blame canada" burger from bar luca.

overall: 5 point burgers? more like 3.5 point burgers, cause that's all it's getting from this hardened (arteries) reviewer.

i dont indulge in super burgers very often but when i do i want a good one. this place does not disappoint. each burger is named after one of burrows of new york & all are delicious. my favourite is the bronx with grilled beef pattie, double cheese, bacon & all the trimmings. it is a monster & worth the calories. the chips are also delicious but service is very haphazard & the wait can be long & slow.

on my visit to sydney last year i did some research as to the best places to eat burgers. i came across five points. north sydney used to be my old stomping ground some years ago when i used to work there.
the joint itself is quite small with one very large sharing table and a few smaller ones so if you're thinking about dining in you may have to change your plans. the fit out is industrial like with concrete and steel finishes. the queues seem never ending during lunch time peak. do expect to wait a good 10-15 minutes after ordering.
i decided on a double bronx which i knew would be challenging but didn't think it would defeat me.
it's a whopper of a burger consisting of two juicy medium cooked beef patties, oozing double melted cheese, real pork bacon (oh how i miss thee - although would of preferred it a bit crispier) along with some salad, american mustard and aioli on a soft warm bun. it was super tasty and almost as good as a five guys burger. but it was also super filling and hard to get my mouth around without wearing half of it. we even had troubles sharing just one serving of thick hand cut fries. i washed it all down with a cascade lemon flavored soda. i will say the double bronx defeated me. i didn't get the last bite in. next time i'll go single patty only. that way i can enjoy a meal instead of being so greedy.

five points is a busy burger joint which has delicious burgers and fries. we ordered the manhattan ($10) and the bronx ($12.5) which was delicious, but a little too greasy. their fries ($4) are also quite good and everything is reasonably priced here. will be coming back!

five points burger came out to much fanfare last year in north sydney because north sydney really lacked burger options. some claim it to be the best in sydney and it's not hard to see why, so be prepared to wait during peak lunch hours. i've been once before and had a good experience with a double bronx, so i thought i'd revisit with a double manhattan.

double beef, double cheese, tomato sauce, pickles, american mustard, aioli, iceberg lettuce

this burger is mighty pretty and the milk bun by brasserie bread serves it well as it holds it all together and doesn't detract from the burger. the meat is high quality, medium rare, and plenty juicy though just slightly underseasoned. the toppings besides the cheese are pretty much an afterthought which is a bit of a letdown. the smoky cheese while good, overpowers most of the burger including the beef so you don't really register any of the sauces and lettuce. if this burger were an actress it would be amy adams, always good enough to be nominated for the best, but not outstanding enough to be the best.

go to five points for the best burger in north sydney, now open thursday and friday nights.

beef: 4.2

bun: 4

toppings: 3.9

overall: 4.03/5

as i was meeting a friend in north sydney, this had to be my first pick of a venue to have lunch. when i got there, as it was opening it was quiet but 10mins later it was busy and the queue was long. most people were taking away but i managed to get the only 2 seater table inside. they have one large communal table and some more stools along the window.

my friend and i both ordered the manhattan ($11) and we both agreed that the burgers were juicy and very tasty. the burger style is nothing fancy, with simple ingredients but done well. the beef was cooked with a pink centre which i think is how a beef burger should be cooked. i also ordered their beer batter chips ($4) which was also tasty but my batch was more soggy then crispy which would be my only small negative. their shakes on offer sounded tempting but that would be for my next visit!

if you love burgers stay away as you'll never want any other once you've had one from five points!!!! hands down the most amazing, delicious, succulent, fresh, tangy burgers i've ever had. the cheese oozing omg. the only place i've seen that exceeds the hype and actually serve food that looks better in real life than the photos. not mentioning the amazing vibe in that place. please open more locations!!!!

very cool burger joint, gets super packed but if you want a great burger then the line is worth the wait. the burgers are fantastic, they come out quite fast too despite how packed this place gets. staff are very friendly.

best burger in sydney.
better than mary's at newtown and marcelleria at bondi - which are both excellent.
the balance of flavour and texture is amazing and the portion size just right.

another famous burger joint that meets the hype expectations that reviews create. tried the bronx burger - the bun was soft, the beef patty was juicy, the cheese had a perfect texture to it. the lettuce was crispy and the pickle provided the perfect complement. the chips were also very enjoyable.

the bronx: big juicy beef patty cooked to medium rare perfection, enrobed in a layer of melted oozy cheese, sandwiched with bacon, tangy pickles, savoury caramelised onions and crispy lettuce all underneath the most amazing soft chewy brioche bun. pick it up between two hands, be careful of dripping oil and juices and tuck into the glorious mess. i actually rate the burger better than the wagyu burger at rockpool. one drawback is a lack of seats inside the premise, so if you have a big group - head to the park a block away and picnic on the grass.

without doubt one of the best burger joints in the massively competitive sydney burger scene. the bronx is the signature burger and for an extra dose of beefy goodness, upgrade to a double bronx. the cheese melts perfectly over the patties, combined with crispy bacon, tangy mustard and lettuce, this is close to the perfect burger!

so wifeofsnackingbear and i finally both had a day off on a weekday and we made our way into the city for bar luca. unfortunately that day bar luca too decided to not come to work which left us stranded for options. still craving nothing but burgers we made our way over the bridge to see what the hype was all about at five points.

when we rocked up there was already a line forming inside the place. it's smaller than i thought it would be... offering a few seats that look out and a large sharing table with stools. we were fortunate enough to snag too seats at the end of the communal table after we placed our order.

wifeofsnackingbear chose to tackle the bronx - grilled beef pattie, double cheese, tomato sauce, pickles, american mustard, aioli, bacon, onion jam and iceberg lettuce. to be honest it just ended up tasting like a fancy cheeseburger with a slice of bacon in it. i love my sauces but this burger was messier to eat than most. the sauce slobbered all over the hands and face quite easily. for me the flavours were simple, nothing really re-inventive and just a burger thats done good.

with two similar beef options on their menu, wifeofsnackingbear insisted on switching the meat and we opted for queens as our second challenger. - grilled chicken breast, bacon, cheese, tomato n' chilli sauce, iceberg lettuce, gherkin mayo. i was happy the chicken was not dry and the sauces were yet again still nothing spectacular. the bacon was not crispy as i'd hope and overall it just felt average at best.

the beer battered chips come in its own box. it's crispy but needs some of the communal sauce on the table to lift the flavour game. i mean even a half decent pub can pull off beer battered chips so it's nothing better than the norm.

we had their salted caramel milkshake - vanilla bean ice cream, milk and famous salted caramel sauce. i love the consistency and appreciated that they didn't try and stuff a cake or donut on top of a milkshake. this is the benchmark of where a good milkshake should start. at the end of the day it's a decent shake at a reasonable asking price.

as we sat and waited for our food the line started spiralling inside the restaurant which meant people were bumping into my back as they walked past just to try and get into a long queue.

to be honest, a zomato rating of 4.6 is bit of a far stretch. that was the deciding vote for wifeofsnackingbear too to justify the drive. i enjoyed the burger, the quality was ok, portion size was ok but was it worth fighting through the lines and waiting for it... i would say no... if the lines short enough give it a try... otherwise i'm not thoroughly convinced about the hype.
