ethiopian. a whole new food appreciation. first let’s start with their bread. injera or enjera. it’s made from teff, the smallest and one of the oldest grains. no gluten. you have to ask for the teff. fermented like sourdough and fried on a large skillet. like naan, this is your utensils. i had the enjera special beef, basically a heavily spiced beef cube stir fry with garden staple veggies and a hot pepper. the spicy lentils, (msir wat) lived up to their billing. spicy and complex with heavy cumin and garlic notes. lots of cumin. did i say cumin? washed it down with some tej;ethiopianhoney wine. it is sweet, but also has some citrus and light astringency similar to greek mastika. this was an excellent experience front to back.

back and better than ever.. the food here is characterized not only by the complex spices and flavoring but by the freshness. anyone familiar withethiopianand eritrean food knows that the best food comes from home cooking. this family run restaurant uses family recipes and everything is made fresh to order. many of the flavors and dishes will be familiar to those that have eatenethiopianand eritrean food before but everything tastes just a little different at enjera. the food is spiced but not overly spiced, and has just a little something extra, a unique flavoring that you just can’t put your finger on but can’t stop eating. they use classic recipes that will be familiar to those who long for food from home, but modern flavors and presentations that will appeal to fans of this food or even those who are trying it for the first time. the italian influence on eritrea means that this place also serves fantastic coffee, the best macchiato in town and the wine list is varied and nicely pairs with all the dishes. the atmosphere is welcoming and comfy and the great music selection playing softly in the background makes dining at enjera an all round fantastic experience. the breakfast menu is well worth making a quick stop for on your way to work too.

best in area..... my mother in law lived in ethiopia for many years and whenever she comes to town we take her to a differentethiopianrestaurant. we have been everywhere in dc and and md, but no restaurants brought her back to the flavors she loves and craves... until we went to enjera. we went to enjera on a recommendation. they food was wonderful (especially the lentils) and the injera was perfect. my mother in law was savoring every bite. the staff could not have been nicer. we had a toddler with us (who loved the food, too) and they took such good care of all of us. only down side... notethiopianbeer, but the honey wine was good and a generous pour! highly recommend this restaurant! we will definitely be going back!!!
