excellent food and service in a hidden location. the restaurant is well hidden, buried in the middle of an l-shaped shopping center, facing a chinese restaurant and next to a cell-phone store. the dining room is fairly small and our party of 11 took up a large portion of the total seating - in fact, when the last of our party arrived, he had to wait for a chair as all the entire dining room was full and no chairs were available!!
the service was excellent, provided by what appeared to be the owner and their family who were very understanding and helpful. even when we had to add another table to accommodate our party, this was handled quickly and without any problems. throughout dinner, we received tips on how to best eat some of the dishes including the durian dessert (see below).
several appetizers were ordered including a dried-tuna flake dish (a daily special whose name i don't remember) and golden triangles (fried tofu). the tuna flakes were different and very tasty - there was a strong fish flavor but b/c the flakes were dry, it was a salty-intense flavor similar to fish sauce. the golden triangles are served with sweet chili sauce and peanuts - the tofu was fresh from the fryer, arriving piping hot and greaseless. as expected, the tofu didn't have much flavor but it was a nice, light appetizer that was well complimented by the chili sauce.
for an entree, i ordered the prig sod moo - long green peppers and pork. the flavors were excellent but for diners wanting heat, this dish is mild (read: not even black-pepper hot) - it is rated "medium" so adjust your request accordingly. the peppers are abundant but even with seeds, they are flavorful, crunchy but as noted, not hot. the condiments (spice powder and chili oils) are very hot and compliment the pirg sod moo quite nicely, adding heat and a different flavor without drowning out the dish's flavor.
several of our party ordered dessert including 2 orders of durian - a pungent fruit from asia. when the durian arrived, it was in a covered glass bowl. the owner warned everyone before he removed the cover and also provided tips about how to eat durian for a first-timer - hold your breath until you get the durian into your mouth amoung other things.
overall, the experience was excellent. the restaurant is small and very cozy which is a nice rarity in the days of the large chain restaurants. add to that excellent food that is fresh and tasty and this restaurant is a winner.
we will be back again!!
