the food is good but. lacking in salt, went here for my mothers birthday and ordered about $90 worth of food since all four of us had appetizers, the chef came out to check on us which was a nice touch but we/i haven't been back since, personally i do not like to add salt after my food has been cooked. the ceviche was too citrus-ey nobody at the table liked it and the fresh juices are something different to try.

excellent service. four of us recently dined at el porton for the first time. i wasn't sure what to expect but my friend indicated that she had heard great things. i started with the chicken and avocado arepa. it seemed to be missing the avocado but was still very tasty! towards the end of the meal i mentioned to our waiter (finding out later that he is the owner, jose) that i needed to come back and try the empanadas. he asked that we wait and he came right out with a couple of them for the four of us to try. they were very good as well. love that the menu items are homemade and made fresh. the live music was also a plus. thank you jose.

i lived in colombia for a year and i liked eating at a place with good latin music and food. however, the service is really poor. our server wrote nothing down and then messed up our order twice. then each time we told her she argued and told us we'd made the mistake. she actually asked my wife to scrape the meat out of her arepa and they'd fill it with another kind of meat. then the manager brought out the replacement arepa and gave us more attitude. we won't go back.  the food is good, but not worth the awkwardness of the service.

i stopped trying to order off the menu and just always get one of each of the two specials and share them with my husband.  i could never make up my mind about what to order.  everything is great and fresh and an explosion in your mouth.  prepared with family love.

can't get enough of this place! after trying it 6 weeks ago, my boyfriend are in at least once a week. we really enjoy getting the sampler (great way to try a many different foods if you are not familiar with the cuisine) and arepas. definitely recommend it!

excellent food...probably the best empanadas ever. the staff is very friendly and service is prompt. jose, the owner, came by the table and welcomed us. outstanding flan!

best flan ever!!!!. the homemade flan at this restaurant is the best, bar none! you gotta try it. it will knock your socks off, it is so incredibly delicious!

not familiar enough to have known about this gem if it weren't for the app. however they clearly had regulars they knew and recognized. fantastic place in a swank feeling building. i'll definately find my way back here again.

another great visit!. four of us went out tonight (5 july 2014). had several appetizers (ceviche, twice stuffed plantains, and empenadas) all were delicious. tried the pork hash for something different and it was excellent. been there several times over the last 4-5 years and always had excellent food.

disappointed. after reading reviews and after a referral from a coworker, i was anticipating a wonderful meal. however, i doubt i will return.

two entrees were ordered--both chef's specials. a skirt steak and a brazilian steak were on special friday, april 12, 2014. each rivaled the other in toughness of the meat. oddly, the server stressed the tenderness in his description.

i really wanted to like the cafe, but the quality of the meat was particularly poor.

i've been craving a cuban sandwich for a while since moving from florida and it is hard to do so in kansas city! i had no idea el porton was so one to me! they did not disappoint! while the cuban wasn't exactly south florida-esque, it was good! bread was awesome and the pork seemed to be roasted and cut in-house. i finished it off with the tres leches cake and it was one of the greatest desserts i have ever eaten! unbelievable!!

delicious pabellon. i went to eat there last night with my best friend!! the service was excellent and so was the food. very comparable to the pabellon that i ate when i travelled to venezuela. i cannot wait for jose to have cachapas on the menu!!
