el meson: bienvenidos from the latin gem of the gem. for thirty years el meson has been a latin staple in dayton's dining landscape. chef mark abbott explains, "we are taking the best of the year's recipes in the next three weeks and creating a menu for our thirtieth anniversary to celebrate our customer's favorite dishes. november and december we will also highlight some of the families favorite dishes. i have been with the castros for the last twenty years, and travelled extensively with them to latin america. it will be a great menu." each year, part of the formula for their success is that the castros close el meson for a couple of weeks in january to visit a different hispanic country and gather new recipes and ideas.
when my family was the most homesick for the cuisine of miami, florida - el meson came onto our radar screen. living amongst latinos in a coastal town like miami made for good eating, and el meson's owners try very hard to replicate the specialties of the hispanic world in this miami. each month to six weeks a different country is featured, when i revisited this month it was ecuador. this is one of my favorite latin american cuisines because our next door neighbor in miami for three years was luz from ecuador. she introduced us to authentic homemade ecuadorian fare. el meson easily became our outpost for these much missed cuban, puerto rico, and other latino culinary connections.
ecuadorian cuisine has some hallmark dishes that share universal roots with other hispanic fare like patacones or chifles (which are plantain plates). then there are plates that are unique to ecuador like llapingacho a potato pancake from the highlands. gloria castro admits, "some of our latino clients have been known to say, 'this isn't the same way my grandmother made this dish' but our american diners always appreciate what we serve."
here the llapingacho ($8) was very authentic and the sopa de quinua con chancho ($7) had rich, complicated flavors. the llapingacho is made with achiote which is a natural seasoning yielding the yellow color of the dish. this soup has ancient origins in south america, dating back to the time of the inca empire. it is a combination of leeks, tomatoes, garlic, cumin, lean pork, potatoes, peanut puree, and quinoa to name a few of the usual main ingredients. although the bread served with a unique salsa, is a nice way to start this meal - you might want to skip it because what will follow is immensely filling.
since it is a spanish establishment, you will find a hefty lineup of over 20 tapas with some of the most popular drinks to accompany the this style of eating. tapas range from $5-$10 with american favorites like tortilla chicken soup ($9) to columbian specialties (the owners' country of origin) like arepas de choclo (a bit crusty on the outside, they dribble mild cheese when you bite into their soft, steamy middles $7). the list is exhaustive with empanadillas, quesadillas, and plenty of seafood options. it goes without saying that the bar at el meson serves refreshing versions of; chile's pisco sour, spain's sangrias, mexico's margarita, brazil's caiparinha, and cuba's mojito's. there are also beers and wines from the caribbean, south american, mediterranean, central american and the philippines.
classic dishes also hail from all of these traditions with spanish flourishes permeating everything from the fiestaware-esque plating of the entrées to the room color schemes. this decor is as festive as thefoodand drink it supports. off the special ecuadorian monthly menu the pollo sudado ecuatoriano ($24) rose to the top. it is a delicious yellow stew made of chicken with potatoes. i stopped on paella night which is served up on thursdays. two traditional saffron styles of paella are the valenciana ($27) with chicken, pork, shrimp and the de mariscos ($29) a mélange of shrimp scallops, mussels, calamari, and fresh fish made of course with saffron rice, seasoned additionally with lemon and onions. off classic menu, i tried the chilean salmon stack ($28) a dish invented by herman castro the co-owner of el meson. it's a layered dish of rice, black beans, a special potato salad, salmon, then topped with plantain chips and garnished with caperberries and plantains. lovely!
colombia is the castro family's native land, so they would naturally have their own favorite "mi casa - su casa" entrées. these are asado of meats ($28) which is a platter of filet mignon, pork, chicken breast and chorizo served with a chipotle sauce or mariscada ($29) is a grilled seafood sampler of tuna, salmon, tilapia, shrimp, scallops, mussels, (sometimes lobster -i've heard), and calamari. there are a number of beef, fish, chicken and lamb dishes ranging in price from $16 to $30.
vegetarians will find various sautéed veggies in fajitas ($16), or the gallo pinto a typical costa rican dish of black beans, rice, onions, tomatoes, and cilantro served with yuca, plantains, and a house salad ($16). there are also vegetarian soups and side dishes ($3-$4). a seven page menu with over 70 tapas, side, salad and entrée combinations can be daunting to the dayton newcomer. but the staff are more than adept at helping you navigate your way through a first experience. for the devotee, you will never get bored with this mega-menu! this is why a friend recently told me that they have all of their family celebrations at el meson - always something new, always something festive. el meson has banquet size meeting rooms as well as intimate dining spaces for every occasion.
to finish our evening a flourless chocolate cake plated in a strawberry sauce was recommended, but they also have more traditional latin desserts like flans or latin twists on american favorites like guava cheesecakes ($3-$5). next time i plan to try a more traditional latin finish.
over the years el meson has been known to have roving mariachis, latin dj music on wednesdays and saturdays, organized tours of latin america with clients, a shop with import-export clothing, jewelry, and other bric-a-brac from the countries in the hispanic world. there is not much that el meson has not tried over the last 30 years in their efforts to bring a bit of south american sunshine to the miami valley. recently at my creative gourmet cooking group, the presenters welcomed newcomers by noting this latin kitsch experience, "if you've moved here from a sunny place and find that midwest winters give you a little bout of sad (seasonal affective disorder) - the best therapy is to go to el meson. the sun seems to be always shining in their simulated tropical patio dining room. it makes you feel warm and cozy, thefoodis fabulous, and the spirits are always high - even on the coldest of winter days!"
the next generation of castros are taking over this latino joystick and the adult children are running the place. the atmosphere remains crazy-busy, thefoodis good , the service is ober-friendly, yielding an excellent value. with any luck, this latin gem of the gem city will give us 30 more years of hispanic fare. this is definitely a destination restaurant in west carrollton that is worth the trip!

not worth it at all! i went here for my birthday last year and will never go back. it was just my boyfriend and i at the table but out entrees arrived 45 minutes apart!! myfoodwas cold an indelible by the time my boyfriend's meal arrived. my boyfriend was livid after we left because to top it all of they failed to sing "happy birthday" to me as he had requested. if you are too busy gone but at least say that don't leave a table waiting for something you don't plan on doing. thefoodwas also overpriced for what it was.

if you are looking for authentic latinfoodthis is your place. the tapas are excellent. my favorite dish is the seafood paella and they make their own sangria. they also serve the best mojitos you will get anywhere in ohio. the decor of the restaurant sets the mood for an enjoyable dinner and night out. meals and drinks are expensive but it’s worth it in my opinion.

i go to el mason from time to time and always enjoy it. so, i decided to throw a surprise birthday party there for a friend who loved the food. we took the small3er banquet room. the party was absolutely amazing. the staff was so helpful before and during the meal. last minute changes that could not be avoided were handled most cheerfully. i give this five stars onfoodand service.

my husband and i are new to the area and coming from texas we had to try this highly rated tex-mex restaurant. we made a reservation at 7:30. we got there at 7:30 and were told there was a wait. we waited for an hour and then were finally seated. after we sat we waited an additional 15 minutes for the waiter to come to our table. we orded 4 tapas dishes and were only served three after another 25 minute wait. just don't go here of you want goodfoodor any type of reasonable service.

too late to the dance?. unfortunately i checked reviews on urbanspoon after trying el meson, instead depending only on opinions of friends. it might have been quite a while since these friends have visited because my experience was certainly not worthy of recommendation. lots of my complaints are similar to others you'll see here - overpriced for amount offoodgiven, bread given with dip is poor choice because it instantly becomes soggy, etc. - but i have issue with something i haven't seen mentioned here. i initially enjoyed being seated in the restaurant's atrium, in particular enjoying all the colorful flowers and decorations, along with the bubbling fountain. before our drinks arrived, i smiled as i heard birdsong and then saw wrens hopping around the fountain to drink. as they became comfortable with our presence, they began to fly overhead and i noticed pin feathers drift down.

i realized after we were leaving the restaurant that our table (in fact, all the tables) were preset with dinner plates and napkin-wrapped silverware. did these birds hop into my or my husband's plate? or some other unsuspecting customer? i'm a bird watcher and lover, but i also have histoplasmosis and wouldn't wish it on anyone just because they wanted to eat out (and got a substandard meal in the bargain). i read praises for el meson from 2009 thru 2011; maybe we just waited too long to try and they're past their prime. we'll not return.

sorry, used to love this place. i have frequented el meson for over a decade, and will not be going there again. the drinks are delicious, but very expensive. they have cut back on their menu items, started downsizing portions and quality ingredients and have increased their prices exponentially. four of us went for drinks and tapas last week, and the bill was $150. the quality of thefoodhad certainly declined. one example of how over-priced things were- one corn arepas ( corn cake) with a little cheese was $7!! seriously? the cake was only about 4" in diameter, cut into 4 pieces. i'm sorry, thefoodwas formerly good and even though it was always pricey, it was worth it. not anymore.

next. so many people had recommended this place to me and now i'm wondering why. i find the restaurant itself to be weird with things all over the place that you can buy (not a fan). the whole place needs a facelift and a good cleaning if you ask me. we ordered tapas and were underwhelmed with the food. nothing special and i will not be back.

authentic south american food. el meson offers high quality, south american cuisine at a reasonable price. the flavors andfoodare top notch and it is no run of the mill "mexican" restaurant. the decorations inside are really interesting as well. a personal favorite is to sit on the patio.

different in a good way. el meson is difficult to really pin down in terms of a category. people going here expecting standard cheap mexicanfoodare going to leave feeling ripped off and confused. people going here expecting fine dining are going to leave feeling overdressed and underwhelmed. el meson isn't so much a "nice" restaurant as it is a "special" restaurant. i grew up in the dayton area and often heard about el meson but could never really figure out what the place actually was. finally, years later i have gone for the first time and i think i understand why people love this restaurant so much.
the outside is deceptively small in appearance. the interior is borderline tacky, but colorful and lively. the shape of the restaurant is kind of bizarre in itself. they have a dining room with a bar, a solarium, and an outdoor patio all connected by hallways. it should be noted that despite the price point, this is not a white tablecloth, dress clothes restaurant. attire seemed to be smart casual when i was there.
service was very good. they have a system in place where if you need service, you just place a little framed note from the restaurant at the edge of your table. every time that we did this someone came within 2 minutes or less to see what we needed. it was almost like the staff was competing to see who could flip that note back over first - i was really impressed. our waiter was a bit awkward (maybe new) but friendly. we probably had 7-8 different wait staff members assisting us over the course of the meal though. our drinks remained filled andfoodcame out quickly.
for drinks, we stuck with margaritas. i got a flight of the regular, gold, and strawberry margaritas. all of them were very good. i overheard the bartender mentioning that they make all of their margaritas with fresh juice daily. the gold margarita in particular was really good - it's difficult to pull off the right amount of alcohol and sweetness but this one was perfect.
food started out with bread and their special salsa. the salsa was quite distinctive - the heat seemed to come from pepper and cilantro and i don't think i've had a similar salsa before. i really enjoyed it and ended up putting it on a number of other things that i ate. i'm not really sure that i understood bread being served instead of tortilla chips though - it didn't quite work since the bread got soggy when the salsa was applied to it.
the current theme menu is colombia - a cuisine i've never tried before. we decided to stick with tapas for our meal. we were expecting the portions to be small but they were actually quite large. our choices were the empanada de pollo sudado, ceviche colombiano, queso fundido, and tacos. the empanadas had almost an indian taste to them (maybe cumin?) and were perfectly cooked - it seems like they are always dry or burnt when i've gotten them elsewhere. the ceviche had a nice lime-cilantro kick to it but the fish wasn't quite as fresh as i'd need it to be in order to enjoy a ceviche. the queso fundido was very tasty - we got the chorizo filling for it and this stuff was hearty! it hit my stomach like an anvil and we were both almost full just after this dish. the tacos had a great taste to them but the flour tortillas couldn't stand up to the amount of liquid in them and so they got soggy. overall, despite a few minor complaints, thefoodwas very good.
we ended up trying flan for dessert, which was a first to us. we found that we didn't really care for it. i think el meson did what they could with it but the texture just wasn't appealing.
all in all, i was really impressed. i love tapas and el meson does some great (if perhaps a bit large and expensive) tapas. this is probably one of the most distinctive restaurants in all of southwest ohio - i don't think that you're going to find anything else quite like it without driving to a big city. the fact that they have a changing seasonal menu which highlights different countries of latin america is massively appealing to me - i think it's a really awesome way to keep the restaurant fun and exciting. the quality of thefoodwas good and the service was fantastic. i'd recommend this to foodies as a must-go restaurant if you're in the dayton area and it is even worth a lengthy drive to try out.

overrated. the service was great, our waiter always checked up on us and ensured we had everything we needed. however, thefoodwas not great. the steak is tasteless and overly expensive. in addition, none of there dishes seemed to be anywhere near authentic spanish/latin food. don't waste your time or money coming to this place. unfortunately i choose this place to take my girlfriend for valentines day and we both left extremely disappointed. i assumed this place would be a winner based on the high percentage of people who liked it and the previous reviews, but i was fooled and don't want this to happen to anyone else. stay away

good food, scary prices. i like el meson. it's got a varied and interesting menu, thefoodis reliably good, and it's a bustling, cheerful place, especially on weekends. it's always been on the high end in terms of cost, but never more so than my most recent visit.

first off, the "classics from spain" off the tapas menu was a dish containing perhaps a couple ounces of three or four types of chorizo, 4-5 very small cubes of manchego cheese (we're talking less than 1" cube), less then half a dozen almonds, a few small strips of roasted red pepper, two pickled garlic cloves, and a few small green olives the size of the end of your pinky (i.e. the sort you can buy from aldis for less than a buck per jar). this was $12.

i was disappointed to see that one of my favorite dishes-- the carne asada with chimichurri sauce-- no longer came with the potatoes aoli or a house salad in addition to beans and rice. even worse, there was only about half a cup of black beans and a lonely-looking mound of rice a little bigger than a golf ball to accompany my steak. this was $20. now, rice and beans are some of the cheapest foods around (for that matter, so are potatoes) so why such tiny amounts? i'm truly baffled. at least the carne asada was delicious as i remembered, perfectly cooked and still slightly pink in the centre.

even scarier in both price and presentation was the chilean salmon stack, a whopper of an entree weighing in at $30. for that, you get potatoes aoli, grilled salmon, beans and rice, all layered into a towering cylinder topped with crumbled plantain chips and fixed by a skewer with fruit on top. thanks to the rather neutral-toned colors and chunky textures of the dish, it's less impressive looking than you might imagine. each component blends indistinguishably into the next, and it's impossible to eat without making a mess. if you don't like all yourfoodmashed together on your plate, you're out of luck! my companion reported it as good but not necessarily so good as to justify the thirty dollars.

a slightly better value was the fresh fish, which came with the much-envied potatoes aoli and a small portion of ratatouille. your choice of grouper, tilapia or salmon can be prepared several different ways, and portion sizes are far more generous. i regretted not ordering that instead.

so, prices have gone up, portions have gone down, and i notice there was no complimentary bread and dipping sauce, either. i admit i don't go to el meson very often, so maybe these changes are old hat. i understand that the economy is rough on small businesses and cost-cutting measures are to be expected, but giving out doll-sized portions of cheap, filling starches doesn't make any sense to me.

i'm still a little disappointed. el meson has never been a place for inexpensive dining, but now i'm not even sure i can justify it as a special occasion restaurant.
