good food with a side of drama. i went to try this resto about a week ago. the location at quiet street, neat place and looks like a perfect spot to start your day in a relaxed way. sort of remind me of montana avenue at santa monica california.

we arrived at 9 am, and all table was full. there're 2 group of people was waiting before us. we waited outside, so we didn't see the sign near the counter that says "cash only" about an hour later, we finally got our seat, and that's when the nice waiter told us about the cash only thingy. the closest atm is at the bowling club, which i suspect it's not a proper bank atm which will charge you a fee. lucky we have a friend who live nearby. while i line up at the counter to order our food, my husband run quickly and borrow $ 100.00 from him. lucky us, he has some cash.

despite all the drama that we have, the food was beautiful. i had smoked salmon and soft boiled egg on toast with cucumber, and my husband had spicy mushroom. coffee wasgoodas well. love the food despite all the drama that we went through. i just don't understand why they didn't have the cc machine considering their price is not that cheap. (we spent about $ 75.00 for our meal.) i don't complain about the price especially when i get that sort of quality of food. it just, i'm the kind of person who rarely have a lot of cash in my wallet.

seriously best breakfast in brisbane. i am in love with this place! have eaten breakfast about 10 times in the past five months and i cannot fault it. great spot, food is served perfectly every time and the variety is superb. the staff are busy but verygoodnatured with and and unfailingly professional. the caramelised mushrooms are the best meal on the menu but nothing i have tried has been lees than wonderful. best coffee around too and the desserts are to die for! if i never eat breakfast or lunch anywhere else again i'll be happy....just wish they did dinner!

tl;dr: it is a new farm institution more or less, that doesn't require an introduction. for me, it might have been adequate from the decent quality food, but a lot of it was tainted by service that seemed to coast purely on the name. just getting it off the list as a resident of brisbane, but that is about it.

there are so many weekends to come, and so many places to put on the list with newbies popping up left, right, and center. putting so much focus on keeping up with the jones that it has been easy to forget all the veteran cafes that have seen through the years. many of them get the highest scores, the most votes, and more or less enter the fray on that odd occasion. it was the case this time around, with the new farm/newstead area being the focal point. whatever was specifically the influence to finally decide on double shot as the breakfast joint, i can't remember; yet this has been one of those cafes quietly beckoning a review.

it was alright. they managed to do most of the basic things right, but not everything was up to scratch. what did manage to happen was getting a decent, filling meal; yet underneath the operations there was not a whole lot of care going around. business is ruthless in this part of town, so everyone got to be on their game.

even if this was the worst place ever, what i would stop and actually give kudos to is what they have done with the amount of space they have been given, combined with the popularity they have acquired over the years. it is among the apartment complexes, so the amount of space is a mere room plus the kitchen, and this time around they got lucky with some balcony space. this is one place that is constantly busy as well, so they also have the turnover to consider. if this were more out in the styx, you could mistake it for a quiet side street. tables spill across the sidewalk, plus all the trees around help give it some shade along with the umbrellas.

a few atmospheric aspects are beyond their control, so i will give plenty of leeway that way. what i can't give leeway to is when customer service is bad. or if bad is a harsh word to use, the customer service came across as a bit too complacent. in spite of there being several waitstaff wandering around, setting up tables, organising where clients go, and bringing out the meals, what i didn't see was an actual sense of organisation.

believe me, i have been reviewing for nearly eight years as of writing this review and i have experienced the whole nine yards when it comes to customer service. not everything has to be super attentive, that much i know. i have been in much busier places, where the organisation was far more meticulous and they managed to get things done. you could tell at those places a true care in how the clients took to the customer service; when it came to the customer service at double shot espresso much of me thought they were coasting on their name, and their reputation. that, my friends, is called complacency.

the menu is mostly going for the cafe style vibe. it has a broad and fairly rich all-day breakfast menu, which starts of with the light continental options, before delving into all things eggs, and getting a few exotic options thrown in forgoodmeasure. lunch is essentially a range of sandwiches plus a few other cafe-style classics - still relatively light. from memory, they also have the usual range of sweets and such in the cabinet for when business is winding down, and starting to wrap up.

as for the drinks, likewise it is the usual range you can get from a cafe. these start out with the normal lot of tea and coffee, but they also provide a solid cold drink selection. these includes sodas, include milkshakes and their ilk, they have several juices to offer as well. around the lunch time rush, the alcohol comes out in forms of beer, wines, ciders and all that jazz.

it started off as per normal, getting some drinks. this is breakfast which means only one kind of drink - that is coffee. when it comes to coffee, i like to keep it simple and that usually means a doppiio. it is my weird on-and-off friend, merlo that serves up the beans this time. in more recent times, i have had a better relationship with merlo here - much of it comes around to how talented the barista behind the machine is. that is an absolute necessity, as it can be the difference between an adequate coffee and a fantastic coffee.

this time around, the coffee was decent. it was not anything outstanding, they didn't burn it or anything, and there was an adequate amount of extraction. the temperature was fine, so was the flavour albeit without any apparent clues to the notes and whatnot.

as much as the coffee itself was good, the mode that it was served was strange to say the least. they used a regular water glass to pour in the coffee. as such, it was only about an inch high in the glass and the aesthetics - which i understand more and more as i go on - did not bode well for it. this looked slack, or could be mistaken as remnants of someone else's drink being served right up, or just several other conclusions. it wasn't a gripe as such then, but come to think of it, this is a gripe. this implies a lack of planning, and leads to something that i swear has was apparent in the air - complacency seeping into the customer service, that is the worst kind of service you can get.

the meals that were ordered were a breakfast burrito, and a spanish sausage called txistorra. both of these were decent meals, and adequately portioned. the burrito was a simple combination of scrambled eggs, chorizo, and grated cheese, with some avocado on the side and a mixed pepper salsa. this was simple in execution, with the scrambled eggs taking up a lot of the room. the chorizo added that nice spicy flavour it is known for, and when the cheese melted it made it all the more enjoyable. on the side, the avocado acted as agoodcondiment that was creamy, and wholesome. all up, this isn't so bad as a filling meal - a bit on the basic side, and not anything that is to write home about, yet still satisfying all up.

with the spanish sausage, on the side it had truss tomato, mushrooms, and poached eggs along with sourdough toast and a beetroot relish. less spicy, and more with a rich sort of flavour, them deciding to go simple was the right choice. i also managed to nibble a bit of the mushroom - cooked well - and a bit of the tomato - getting cooked just enough to release the flavours. i think of this as a mediterranean version of the fry-up.

this is one more place that i reckon is coasting too much on its reputation, and as a result much of it can come across as complacent. in particular, that was the case with the service. while props are given to them keeping themselves busy, there wasn't that impression they cared that much for the experience beinggood- the things like asking how things were, or checking up on the clients occasionally. it took something that has a reputable reputation, and dragged it down into barely above mediocrity. it might be me going against the grain, that i can accept. but to even the most storied institution, you should work well and present yourself as the new up-and-comer - always.

this is one of the best cafes in brisbane and i absolutely love it! have been here before then change to a gluten free diet and found it excellent. i recently went back and felt like a toastie and was concerned about gluten free cooking environment with sandwich press but staff were very gf aware and even made what is usually a wrap into a sandwich for me to enjoy due to other preferences.
i ordered the twice cooked potatoes on the side which are also gf and they were perfect match with the sandwich. the food wasgoodportion size and delicious. i felt very comfortable and happy with the service. would dine there all the time if i could!

there's often a wait to sit at doubleshot but that's an indicator of howgoodthe food is. lots of tables inside and out so the turnover is still impressive. huge menu that'll suit whatever you fancy; their homemade baked beans were delicious and the platters have every staple just in case you can't decide!

met up with some friends for a lovely breakfast at double shot new farm.

the iced latte was a little weak, butgood(3). the presentation of the babyccino was great - one of the best i've seen in a while (4).

the breakfast burrito was massive. the avocado and red bell pepper salsa were great, but the chorizo would have been better if it had been cooked a little longer to crisp up. overall, this rated a 3.5.

the croissant was huge and the serving of jam (quite literally an individual jar of jam) was extremely generous, especially when you consider that the whole thing was only $4.50. light and extremely flaky, this rated a 4.

the poached eggs on sourdough toast was quite nice. the eggs were cooked perfectly - the yolk was beautiful! the sourdough toast was a little chewy, which i like, and was the perfect size to accompany two perfect eggs. although basic, this was a well done dish and rated a 4.5.

we also ordered a lemon sponge for takeaway. it hadgoodflavour, but was just a bit dry. this rated a 3.5.

i'm not a huge fan of counter service, but the prices weregoodand the size of the breakfast burrito and croissant were generous. the restaurant was open and there were ceiling fans, but it was quite warm and would have benefited from some air conditioning. based on other reviews i expected chilled water, but we went through five bottles and none felt chilled.

overall, the food was a 4, the coffee/babyccino was a 3.5 and the atmosphere rated a 3. the company was a 5, but double shot doesn't get credit for that!

i struggled to assign an overall rating, but landed on 3.5 vs 4 because the overall was definitely above average, but not quite great. air conditioning would have easily bumped the rating to a 4.

finally come to back to where our reviewing journey started - double shot! we came across this beauty after a recommendation from mb's colleague early last year.

service - cannot fault the service. on each occasion we have been here, service has always been great. the staff are super friendly, clearing the table in a timely manner and always smiling. although it is counter service and it does get incredibly busy, service is quick and efficient with coffee and food arriving at the table fairly quickly.

double shot is very easy to find. great location, down a quiet street in new farm with plenty of street parking.

i ordered the croque madame with a side of haloumi. the croque madame was prettygoodbut where was the rest of my ham and cheese filling? the bread was cut quite thick so it felt like i was eating just bread with no filling at all. the homemade onion marmalade is delicious but it seemed like there wasn't as much of it as there usually is. the poached eggs were perfect. the whites just set and when poked with my fork, a stream of gorgeous rich, golden velvety goodness greeted me. the haloumi was incredibly salty. now coming from someone who loves salty food, this says a lot. it was salty to the point it hurt my throat. there was nothing on my plate that could counter that saltiness.

for dessert (yes, there is always a dessert after each meal brekky), i had the lemon curd tart. i love all things citrus so i was super excited for this tart. the base, taste wise, was reallygood- buttery and slightly sweet. texture wise, i would consider it overbaked. it had been in the cabinet chilled and the tart shell was lined with chocolate so this could have contributed to the shell being so solid. it was really hard to break through with a spoon. the curd itself - delicious. i love a sharp hit in my lemon curd so this was epic. complimented nicely but the chocolate lined in the tart shell and the sweet vanilla cream on top. it was lovely looking at the cream and seeing flecks of vanilla, delish! it was quite rich overall so definitely a dessert to share but it was very yummy.

overally, food was prettygoodbut a little disappointed by the portions.goodcoffee and so many delish items in the cabinet to choose from. price isgoodtoo - 2 breakfast meals, 2 coffees and a lemon curd tart cost us around $50. agoodplace to meet up with friends for brekky.

the hungry little goldfish (forgot to tag you friend! sorry!)

have been here a few times and no complaints, but having not gone for a while thought it was time to revisit.

cant recall if they served merlo coffee last time i was here put pleasantly suprised to see that they do now, very quick delivery of coffee and tops to the barista for wipping up a fine brew, coffee not an issue, loved it. we move onto the brekky and unfortunately this is were the let down begins, i ordered the breakfast board and to my suprise the serving size has gotten a lot smaller, less greens, less meat, less cheese and all over smaller portion, tastedgoodjust expecting more on the board. love the feel and location of double shot, staff very attentive and friendly and cant fault that aspect. brilliant start to the weekend. meatballs and beef cheeks mini meatball lady meatball espresso&matcha the hungry little goldfish

we were promptly greeted with a friend service and seated in a nicely ventilated. i ordered a long black which was very syrupy, chocolately and spicy in agoodway. my friend's flat latte was smooth with silky foam.
one down side was that the cafe should have been a full table service, not order and pay at the counter.

took my friends dogs (& her), out for a walk in new farm park, as a non-pet owner, it was an ideal afternoon, completed by a lovely brunch / lunch at double shot.
i'm a longtime new farm local & only recently started coming here.
great coffee, efficient / awesome service (to be fair she was an old acquaintance of mine). i'm sure she'd be the same with everyone though. she's a peach :)
food was quite small for the price, everything looked & tasted like it had a clear professional touch.
i had the salmon & potato cake, it was pretty ok, i have a small appetite & was still peckish.
my friends salad was delicious though. i'd negotiated more than a couple of mouthfuls . instant food envy.
my super cute british bulldog companion who happily slobbered & panted under the table decided to go feral out of nowhere.... we made a hasty departure, deranged dogs in tow.
cool afternoon, goodbite to eat, what's not to like (??)

double shots expresso – my sacred breakfast spot.
for many of us, having a delicious breakfast on the weekend is like a religion, it heals you and you are cured.  all the stressful and tightened nerves are loosen right after a sip of the double shot expresso.  it is a simple philosophy – worse your week went; the greater joy you will receive by a scrumptious breakfast.
if you asked me what was the most delicious food i had ever tasted? without any hesitation, my heart goes duck breast dish in dish of byron bay in 2009 which chef michael de laurence had brought me my first “eyes roll up” experience. and it is almost heart broken to know  this two out of the four-hatted restaurant was unfortunately closed down during the gfc in 2010; since then i could only recall this heavenly favour in my dream!
not until recently, i had found that same sensation again several times when i started to set my foot to this new farm café - double shot expresso.
i once seriously thought they must have some fairies cooking for them as it has a world’s tiniest kitchen i have never seen. all the dishes are just magically presented to you by a staff with a warm but apologetic smile saying “ so sorry for keep you waiting!” yes, that is the fact, i often waited 40 minutes for a dish during their peak time and trust me for the person like me who has a middle name “no patience” that is a huge deal! but let me tell you folks, it is the most worthy 40 minutes time i had ever waited. and if you think i am alone, you are wrong, the house is packed! and trust me, we know what we are doing!
remember those moment you rolled your eyes up and thought you are having an orgasm, thegoodnews is, in here, you don’t even have to pretend you are having one, you will actually get one, well, with food of course!   the corn bread, the chicken terrine, the duck paté, the flaky pastry, even the supporting actor of the dish capsicum pickles, the list goes on and on….. they are doing what people often say “all make sense”!
and guess who made all these possible, here i present to you - chef michael de laurence and owner ross skinner! what can i say, you guys had done it again! for me, those eyes roll up moments all made senses now!

caution! for those whom had been here, please stop telling people howgoodthis place is, i think 40 minutes is long enough to wait!!!

your truly vita & andré

the best breakfast ever and coffee. i am a foodie and can not find any where that pleases me apart from my own home where i cook up a storm but double shot espresso new farm is the best breakfast and lunch cafe that i have ever been to - today i had poached eggs with bacon and grilled tomato with a lovely chilli sauce with some rocket and sourdough toast on the plate beautifully displayed but the taste was like having it cooked at home sogoodthere was not one thing i could complain about it was perfect - i have had lunch there as well but their sweets are the best i have had for along time as they are all cooked on their premises and they are the best - again i cook all my own cakes and desserts at home myself so i am very judgemental when i go out as desserts are one of my main things that i pride myself with but they are asgoodas what i make and that is a huge compliment for them. very organized there the staff are lovely and the coffee is excellent. i rarely comment but this is such a great restaurant that i felt i needed to let others know howgoodit is.
