definitely don't go there unless you have at least 2 1/2 hours to eat. there were only two of us in my party but it took 30 minutes just to get our appetizer. we asked for our order to go and the waitress was definitely not pleased with us. on the good side the fried yuca is very good. once we got to our destination not long after our experience at the restaurant we were able to eat our food. one order was wrong and my rice was definitely not fully cooked. the food is ok besides the uncooked rice.i don't think i would recommend this place and i don't think i would eat there again.

ordered the mixed empanadas for appetizer, which were average. the squid salad, which was recommended by the waitress was quite tasty. the squid was a perfect texture, but was unfortunately drenched in too much dressing. the plantains it came with were delicious and crunchy. my husband's steak was a little overlooked. overall, it was a great dominican dinner with large portions.

home-style dominican cuisine in the flower city. sign me up as yet another d'mangu enthusiast. situated in the bleak industrial heartland of suburban rochester, d'mangu stands out like a shiny gem. it is another outstanding ethnic cuisine restaurant that is family run. you are greeted with a smile by the gracious staff into a nicely appointed, spotless caribbean-decored dining area. you can order from the buffet or from the menu. i had lechon asado (pulled pork) with yellow rice, red beans and plantains. it was all succulent and in ample portions. next time, i'll try one their tantalizing mofongo dishes. each bite takes you away from cool, staid upstate ny to the pulsing warm vibes of the dominican republic. the owner, luis, is welcoming and quick with a funny line. rochesterians are fortunate to have a wide diversity of cuisines to choose from, of which d'mangu is one. give this one a try. you won't be disappointed.

different, in a good kind of way. i've been on a pretty bad streak lately. finally broken by d'mangu.

the place is hard to find. just south of the king and i, which has a much larger sign. it doesn't look like much from outside, but inside it's clean and pleasant.

the food is different. the chicken and rice was unlike anything i've ever had, and i've tried a lot of different latin american and caribbean styles. they make a hot sauce that went well with it. i finished it off with an excellent flan.

i was there on a saturday night. the place was busy, but not packed. they took my order promptly, but it took a while for it to arrive. quite a while. they say they start when you order, and i can believe it. if you go when you're in a hurry you'll probably find it to be an unpleasant experience. (on the other hand they have some things ready for takeout.)

let me start by saying the food was very good, but i will never ever go back again, here is why:

i went to this place with my mother for lunch one sunday, we are both adventurous when it comes to food and neither of us had ever had dominican food before, decided to give this eatery a try. right off the bat after we were seated we started getting some strange and unwelcomed looks from the other diners, the vibe was very clearly “you don’t belong here”. we took a look at the menu and tried to order, but the waiter suggested we try a dish (a kind of stew), served only on sundays, that was not on the menu, but everyone else was eating, to which we agreed. then the waiting began... service from the kitchen (at least to our table) was very slow. it seemed there was a constant flow of food coming out and going to other tables, but we were not much of a priority. at one point our waiter (who seemd to run the show) brought us a free appetizer, a kind of fired croquet that tasted like it was filled with cat food as a kind of peace offering. it was the only thing i ate that i didn’t like. eventually the food did come, and it was very good, but while we were waiting other customers flowed in the door and greeted our waiter with an amount familiarity that could only really mean they were very regular patrons, some of these new arrivals gave us similar unwelcoming looks as they came in, and one or two even pointed us out to the waiter and made some sort of quiet comment, followed by laughter. at the end of the main course our waiter returned and asked if we wanted any sweets to finish off our meal, my mother ordered a piece of their cake, it never came. after a very long wait the waiter returned and asked “how was the cake” we told him then that we never got it, and wanted the check. the waiter half heartedly explained that it was a busy “family day” and that’s why things were the way they were there, basically “too bad for you, but we are not sorry.” i guess our "family" didnt count. we had been there about two hours total for lunch, while the food may have been good, i have never felt so unwelcomed in a restaurant or neglected by the unapologetic staff. all i can say is shame on this place and its patrons for treating us this way, this should have been a good experience for us trying to understand and enjoy dominican food and culture, and not the horrible experience it turned out to be.

i visited this restaurant recently and all i can say is the food is outstanding and delicious. i personally went up to the owner to let him know that i very much enjoyed the food and appreciated how clean his restaurant was, especially the restroom. any one that reads this review should know that this is the place to go if you want good monfongo with chicken.

great, what a bargain!. only got takeout, but i thought the food was great. the $10 portion was extremely generous and was plenty for two with leftovers. pork was cooked perfectly with a spicy , garlicky flavor. rice and plantains were quite good, the owner was very friendly. all in all an excellent experience.

promising, but....... we visited for friday night dinner. rice and beans were great, and i really enjoyed the mofongo. it's nicely decorated, everything looks great--very colorful, with dominican flair, but understated classy (the walls aren't totally covered with decorations--i think the amount is just right and looks great) . but the waitress was pretty disinterested, the fried pork was really dry, and the chicken lacked flavor.
we'll return and try other dishes.

outstanding. this is the old king and i, but you would never know it when you walk in. its very clean and modern, nice atmosphere. great steam table that you can see the food and order from. 3 different sizes. the large comes with choice of 2 meats, rice, plantains and salad for less then 10.00. the food is fresh and delicious. i had roast pork that was juicy and the skin was crunchy and yummy. also had stewed pork that was fork tender and melt in your mouth delicious.make sure you try the house made hot sauce. not super hot, but a nice vinegary taste. finished with some really great flan. there is also a menu you can order off of.

great dominican food!!!. i was extremely impressed by this new restaurant. the food is excellent, priced extremely well, especially when you factor in the amount of food and the quality of the meal. the service is notable and the family style meals and hearty helping size in their lunch buffet is more than adequate for any famished individual. the staff are very welcoming and helpful/descriptive in the food that is being served. i would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone! also, ask for their homemade hot sauce... it is extremely tasty!
