the food here is so good, it's truly a hidden and unassuming gem. my breakfast burrito was the size of my head. it's seriously dark inside, which is strange when it's bright and sunny outside so much in arizona, but i highly recommend it.

my only complaint is that this place is hard to find and i am pretty sure that's by design.  the place is also a tad cramped but that i also by design as it prevents the kitchen from getting overwhelmed and helps provide to the ambiance. we were greeted by the staff and taken to an open table and had a seat and got service fairly quickly.  the appetizer was chip con queso that was made with local chips, peppers, and cheese that was second to none. the main course for me was the enchiladas that consisted of 1 chicken, 1 roasted shrimp, and smoked pork that was to die for. my wife had a special of pork tamales  that was beyond flavorful.
be careful with the margaritas as they are potent and served in 12 oz glasses...

this place looked trendy so i was worried it was going to be one of those pretentious restaurants dripping with cliches and more concerned with being original than being good. my fears were entirely unfounded. this is just danged good food and a good atmosphere.

from the bar, you can watch everything cooked in small batches. meat on a spit. a firebox in plain view. dozens of frying pans for made-to-order entrees.

i got the enchiladas with green chiles—the spicy ones. fantastic. my brother who works in a high-end meat shop was blown away by the quality of his steak. using the mexican coke and sprite with real sugar was a nice touch. a perfect “exhibit a” in the case against chain restaurants.

also, the place was filled with humorous signage—but not everywhere. just enough to add a dash of character.

one of the best meals i’ve ever had in phoenix/scottsdale area. i came for happy hour, tried the chile relleno, chipotle ribs, skewers (beef, chicken, shrimp, and sausage plus 4 dipping sauces), enchiladas (pork, smoked, turkey, and shrimp), and a side cup of the carne adovada (their signature dish). all were amazingly delicious!! and quite distinct from one another. i’m all for unique or intelligent combinations of flavors, and these dishes all delivered. ... got the key lime “pie” which had great flavor but an odd consistency (not at all “set,” was more like a cold soup or runny pudding).

will definitely come again.

18 months later: second time here, and just as good as i remembered it. i got three enchiladas (pork, beef, and shrimp), a chile relleno a la carte, chipotle ribs, queso+chorizo dip, and green chile burger. all were exceptional, and different from one another. would re-do the exact same thing again (and may very well do that next time i’m in town).

how they churn out the amazing food that they do with such a little kitchen is unbelievable. i've had ten+ items off the menu and every one of them is great. the cocktails are fantastic, and the internal ambiance is awesome. the sense of humor ('for your protection, our cooks wear condoms') is right up my alley. did i mention there is no sign in front of the restaurant?

it all adds up to a five. can't go here enough (and i live on the east coast!)...

second time ever being at this tucked away spot to tuck in and once again, caused southwestern suenos. part of the richardson's family of local eateries this just takes cozy cave to another level. more casual than richardson's and with an awesome back story to match built up from the ruins of the time when rokerij's burned down it's the intimate, small, candle lit spot studded with cacti. this hacienda style hangout serves delicious fare and another highlight is brunch is served until 4:00 pm which for me is always a plus. great fresh and bright salsas and guac with well seasoned tortilla chips and the garlic shrimp pasta is luxurious tossed in a creamy spicy sauce. fresh stellar pasta is always a winner especially in such warm and romantic setting as this. this is the perfect place to spend sometime with a meal truly have a full experience so do not expect to have your table turned rapidly which is refreshing. i would recommend this for celebratory dinners or especially as a stand out hidden gem for friends to bring their out town folks through to showcase az eats and southwestern style with an enchantingly all encompassing experience.

dick's hideaway: a hidden gem in az. known for some of the best new mexican cuisine in the valley, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. this is a favorite spot for locals or guys like me looking for a fun and unique place to take friends and enjoy happy hour or for an evening out.

when entering dick’s hideaway, you know your in for a treat when you have to look for the door to get in. you must sit at the bar as it is an exhibition kitchen and you can watch the chefs prepare the food you order, super fun! with the specials and happy hour written on the walls and of course the "no kardashians allowed" sign, this place makes for a great hangout spot. go ahead and try the bathrooms, it's a fun experience all together just getting to them!

after being a weekly devoted patron for 30 years we are completely disappointed with our dinners tonight. the quality, quantity, presentation, taste and cost are no longer classic richardsons. the new mexican platter: take a food item away load it up with cheese and beans, put it on a massive platter and....no. it isn't worth it. our other meals were representative as well. hoping this changes or we will eat elsewhere. bummed.

the patrons are mostly here to inhale honking big breakfasts, served on hot pewter plates. there is another room, with a couple of cool, copper common tables. but really, you want to be rubbing shoulders on a bar stool, watching a short-order pro whip up everything from french toast to eggs benedict with two chunks of tenderloin steak.

i thonl that dick's hideaway is much cooler than his richatdsons location which he has chosen rebuild righ right next door to the rokerij. the hideaway is next to luci coffe and grocery. look for a worn wood door with wood slats over the 2 small windows on the door. the ste# 6008 is above the door.
