brunch & dinner. have been to both and the food was excellent. was a bit dissatisfied with the potatoes being cold and having to send thembackas well as the steak & eggs not coming with toast and having to pay an extra 2 bucks or something for it on the brunch. but must say the steak was prepared to perfection and extremely tender. the flavored mimosas were awesome. was so looking forward to the moscow mules only to find out they didn't have the copper mugs to make them. hope they get some or at least take them off the menu. the dinner filet was also just as wonderful as the breakfast steak.

interesting food, great atmosphere. let me just get this out of the way: yes, i am old. yes, i grew up on broiled steaks, chinese food in a can, brick-like meatloaf and fried everything. never knew anything about non-wasp food until i moved to cleveland in my 20's. so the potential to dislike the food at deagan's was there. because i still like mashed potatoes - with just butter. but i've learned to love signature foods from all the 6 and 1/4 decades i've lived through. deagan's has some challenges to old ideas about food. that's a very good thing in deagan's hands. a party of four - my daughter, son-in-law, husband and i - ate at deagan's right before mother's day. the building is where the old barnacle bill's used to reside but there were no cockroach's on deagan's walls. exposed brick and old wood made me happy just looking at it. clean, well decorated space made for confidence in the purity of the food. the service was attentive without being intrusive. the server was friendly and helpful to a tee. the food was interesting and kept the dinner talk flowing. we shared an arugala, cranberry and walnut salad that was one of the "small plates". there was enough for all four of us to get more than a taste, and what a good taste it had! the dressing aided each of the flavors to blend and yet be distinct enough to recognize. the arugala was not bitter, but had a slightly spicy, peppery taste that was a far cry from my home grown arugala used in salads. each of us got different dinner entrees so that we could share. my husband's salmon was cooked perfectly, flaky and moist yet cooked through. my bangers and mash were fine, but the sausage was not english sausage which is very flavorful yet mild. the sausage was spicier, fatter and a bit greasy. though i enjoyed it with the mash, i'll probably not order it again. my son-in-law's fish and chips were delicious. the batter was a tempura type, which i found very pleasing. finally, my daughter had the saturday's special steak. it was very beautiful, ordered medium rare and delivered with a lovely pink/red interior. the sauce added to the overall enjoyment. everyone seemed to enjoy each other's selections. we made room for dessert and here we had a mixed review. my husband's bread pudding was, to him, a disappointment as it bore little resemblence to tradional bread pudding. others might enjoy it. my tiramisu had very few notes of the coffee element i love but was very light and delicious. the other desserts were enjoyed thoroughly - especially my son-in-law's brownie sundae. i look forward to comingbackand trying deagan's other dishes.

the good old days. deagans has always been our favorite go-to spot for brunches and an occasional dinner. the food used to be amazing. the sunday bartender, mandy, was great. she was engaging and really knowledgeable about beer selections. we looked forward to brunches and for a while we were regulars.
i miss those days because the bartenders now are not engaging in the slightest and unfortunately, like so many other reviews, i have to agree. the food is nowhere near what it used to be. i would think cooking something as basic as an egg would be a requirement. both of our dishes were overcooked the first time and one under done the second. the potatoes were cold and underseasoned.
i write this review because deagans, you were our favorite restaurant. what happened? !?! we loved you. please, please gobackto the quality you were once known for!

what happened?. we used to frequent deagan's often. we wentbackafter a 6 month hiatus and found the prices higher and the food not as good. for the portion sizes offered - they are charging way too much. could be worth it if the food returned to its previous quality - but we're not sure we will return anytime soon. rather go to barrios and have our fill of great tacos for a lot less.

terrible service.... my brother and i stopped in here one late afternoon and sat and sat and sat and sat... until finally the bartender greeted us and handed us menus. we seriously waited upwards of ten minutes before being greeted and the place was dead, so being busy wasn't the reason. the bartender then proceeded to play on his phone and talk to another customer at the other end of the bar and never even camebackand took our order. we were in there for at least fifteen minutes total and couldn't even place a drink order. i wish i could comment on the food since i have heard some good things, but i never even got to try it.

3 out of 4 of us loved our food at brunch. the cuban was good but not something i would brag about. the chicken and waffles(two orders). both wonderful. one with blackberry and one with maple syrup. equally delicious. the poor french toast bombed. the bread was soggy. pretty much undercooked. the staff was so polite in taking itbackand bringing out a way better version. the cocktails were dee-lish. thanks for an all around great morning.

my first experience at deagan's. i went on a late sunday morning to have brunch with my mother. we went in thebackentrance and walked up the stairs where we saw a young girl in her sunday dress waving and smiling. she belonged to a family that was waiting for a table, and i noticed it was fairly packed for a sunday afternoon. at first, i was told there was going to be a twenty minute wait. however, an employee came over to inform us that we actually could be seated right away. she double checked that the tables were clean and we followed her to the table. instantly i felt welcomed. as i walked to the table, i noticed large groups of people, co-workers or friends at the bar, and families dressed up presumably coming from church. there was reclaimed hard wood floor and a mix-match of chairs at the tables which were all reused sturdy wooden chairs. i took my seat at a high top table, which i must admit felt slightly small. however, this is probably my only complaint. two entrees and an appetizer would have barely fit, and that does not leave room for a purse or any other belongings. keep in mind it was the only the high top tables that were like this; the bar and regular tables looked like they had a surplus amount of room. i took a glance at everybody else in the room which consisted of smiling families, a group of young adults around high school or college age, and friends at the bar. i did not notice any complaints or unhappy faces. i also watched the waitresses bring out food and noticed that all of the portions were huge. so far, great portions and great service to match.
anisa, the waitress, came over to the table. energetic and friendly, she informed us about the food, create your own bloody mary station, and mimosa's which were the special at the time. she offered to bring waters while we perused the menu. deagan's menu does change, but they are known for several dishes. their menu was only somewhat small, but for a menu that changes frequently and worries more about quality than quantity, a complaint should not be necessary there. some words were foreign on the menu, but fairly easy to figure out. one thing i greatly admired about the menu was that i could easily tell that the chef cared about the quality of the ingredients used in all of the dishes. the food did not contain pesticides or hormones, the chicken was amish, the maple syrup all from ohio, and the cheese from great lakes cheese company. using local ingredients does mean that seasonality would effect what courses can be served, but the restaurant seems to have no trouble keeping clientele with a changing menu. in fact, it is often exciting and new. what's also great was that the prices were incredibly reasonable. an entree ranged from $10-15. personally, i thought this was fabulous considering the giant portions you get and the excellent quality of the food.
after reviewing the menu in depth, i finally settled on the classic chicken and waffle, which i thought was appropriate for my brunch. this included a fluffy belgian waffle on which fried chicken sits, with a side of cayenne butter and ohio blackberry maple syrup. i also ordered their famous house made donuts with mixed berry preserves as well. my mother ordered a canadian bacon quiche with "insalata" (salad). we also ordered a tropical mimosa, which consisted of part champagne and part orange juice.
it did not take long before the house made donuts came. the small bite-sized donuts arrived in a small white bowl with newspaper to cradle them, which i thought was unique and cute. they were covered (but not smothered) with cinnamon and powdered sugar. the berry preserves that were served with it was a perfect companion, providing a fresh and slightly tart flavoring to the sweet, sugary donuts. right as we were on our last one, our entrees came! the timing was great, and i never thought that i was waiting too long for my food. the portions looked huge, and i could feel the steam coming off from the chicken, the aroma wafting in the air. upon the first bite, i was instantly amazed at how well the flavors blended together. my mouth watered immediately at the delicious taste. the waffle was perfectly cooked, the chicken was wonderfully soft with a sweet, crispy coating. the ohio blackberry maple syrup had a savory, rustic taste to it which i was very pleased by. i swiped one of my bites in the cayenne butter, which was served as a cold dollop on the side of the waffle. i was not prepared for the after taste of the cream, which was then spicy. it was a surprising kick, which still complimented all the other flavors. i would have never thought to have mixed together a waffle, chicken, blackberry syrup, and cayenne butter. thankfully, the flavors worked very well together. although i did not try any of my mother's canadian bacon quiche or the salad, the portion looked great. it also looked fresh, and the salad was very crisp and clean.
our waitress came several times through out the evening. it never seemed like too much, but i didn't feel ignored either. at one point, she talked with us for several minutes about her love for the food and how she liked where all the food came from. i could tell she believed in the passion that the chef had for the food. she was extremely fun, polite, and knowledgable. after paying for the check, we walked out the front door to get a feel of the neighborhood. upon leaving, i glanced around the restaurant. there were petite lights hanging over the tables with paintings on them, there were chalkboard signs on the wall with all the different quality beers they served, and beneath that was the create your own bloody mary station.
i can see myself coming here in the future for an event such as a late night meal with friends or a significant other, a small celebration, or to meet with co-workers. the music was at a good level and even with the conversation in the restaurant i could still keep up a conversation while talking at a normal level. what makes this restaurant so appealing was the excellent service, the price for the portion and quality of food, and the comfortable ambiance. when you go to deagan's you can't go wrong!

holy mother of god, is this place delicious.. my first experience with deagan's wasbackin february where i sampled some of their beers and pommes frites. the pommes frites definitely received my seal of approval, and their beer selection is one of the top in cleveland.

my second experience was a couple of weeks ago. i enjoyed the shrimp tacos and the prime rib tacos (on special). both types are a soft taco with creamy avocado, cilantro and a pico de gallo sauce that is transcendental. why am i not eating this right now??

we also munched on the sesame crusted calamari, drizzled with a sweet and sour sauce and wasabi cream (omnomnomnom).

the prices are spectacular for this level of food as well. with beers, appetizers, 4 entrees and the tip, we got out at around $100.

i will gladly go here again, and bring any of my out of town friends here as well.

ponzo(?) tofu salad ohno!. let me preface this review by saying that i have eaten at deagan's before and been very happy with my meal there. but tonight's meal was so drastically different that i had to make sure that others go forewarned.

unless you like your tofu rolled in salt and then deep fried. stay away from the ponzo tofu and soba noodle salad. the tofu was inedible! it is my fault that i did not send itbackto the kitchen after the first bite, but i am not prone to send food back. the dish arrived looking okay, but i was immediately disappointed that the tofu was deep fried (or appeared to be because it was almost black.) i don't eat deep fried food and it wasn't explained that way on the menu. the waitress said it had a light asian maranade. but when i tasted it, the crust was too salty (soy saucey) to eat. i cut the salty fried edges off of the tofu and ate the middle. (which gave me two small bites of tofu) with the asian style soba noodle salad. the noodle part was good.

because i am vegan i ordered the side of vegetables to complete my meal. i asked that it be prepared with just a little oil. the oil was overdone compared to what i asked the waitress for.

the thing that i thought was odd was i told the waitress that the tofu was inedible, and she didn't offer to take itbackand bring me something else.

too bad i had to buy dinner and go home and fix myself something to eat.

hey, my husband's fish and chips looked good.

delicious food and interesting beer choices!. deagans is considered a "gastro-pub" , which is basically in terms of explanation, fancier than bar food but not quite top-tier restaurant food. honestly though, the food at deagans is totally top notch and very much amazing. the calamari is the best i've ever enjoyed both in relation to flavor and consistency. the spicy shrimp taco's are out of this world, flavor-wise, although i do wish you'd get a few more on your plate. (two plates covers me) also the peking duck mac and cheese is a creamy wonder of a meal! really, i could go on and on and on. it is all fantasically awesome!

moving onto the beers, they have some oddball choices which i found interesting. one is called "the broadway" and it is a combo of pepsi and beer. it is mild and i love the drink as a laidbackkind of affair. i also sampled the guiness and champagne, which proved to be pretty different as well. the regular list of choices is also pretty solid and another solid part of deagans. lastly, the decour is top notch and very snazzy. it is the kind of place lakewood has needed for years and i love it!

for the fourth installment of the veggie-vegan project, i turned to a friend and fellow food blogger, jill , who through the meetup group she managed, cleveland eats , taught me about this month's dining hotspot, deagan's kitchen & bar. it turned out that deagan's offered a daily specials menu and on wednesdays, not only could you order from their regular menu, but also from a specially prepared list of both vegetarian and vegan based dishes. while i was originally supposed to join the cleveland eats group when they originally wentbackin february, unforeseen personal circumstances kept me from that night. so, to rectify the situation, this past wednesday, myself, eric, paul, and edsel descended upon deagan's around 6:30 pm to sample some of the veggie-vegan treats off the menu. deagan's was located at 14810 detroit avenue, lakewood, oh 44107 and can be reached at 216-767-5775. they have a website as well. there was a street-side entrance and a rear entrance behind the building where
