i had been wanting to try this restaurant for years after reading a review in a magazine. it has such a fantastic view when you're sitting at thebartop in front of the cooks to get right in the action! the food was delicious. however, we ordered the prawns and we knew they were going to have the heads and shells on but they were split on their back and the veins were still intact. i would say more restaurants than not choose to devein their shrimp before serving to a customer and i do not believe i have ever been served one that was not. if the shell had not been split open i might have understood.

while visiting my girlfriend in asheville for her birthday she picked this place after many positive referrals. i was starving as i hadn't eaten since breakfast so this was exciting.

we were promptly seated upon arrival, the decor was unique and cute and on the alternate side of the fullbarthere is an open kitchen which is really neat. our waitress, whitney, was lovely, patient, well versed in the menu and committed to ensuring we had a fabulous meal and experience, which we did! thanks so much for making the night splendid!

we had quite a lot of wine so apologies for not remembering the name of them. we selected some great wines from their extensive list: lovey rosé, alberiño, and a fascinating...yes i said fascinating...red wine...along with some patrón shots. the most expensive patrón i've ever purchased but i guess a top shelf brand at this restaurant is quite expensive. this is the only negative comment i have about the restaurant is the pricing of the patrón.

so on to the amazing meal!!! we enjoyed the following menu items(all excepts from the menu are listed within "":

the beginning:
we began with the "pan de cristal con tomato toasted crispy bread with fresh tomato, garlic and olive oil" make sure you add manchego cheese ... finely sliced delicate pieces of heaven. so perfect and delish.

birthday girl's favorite "patatas bravas (lf, tnf)
crispy fried potatoes topped with a slightly spicy tomato and garlic sauce (v: no all i oli)"...we almost needed a second order.

"spicy chorizo wrapped in potato chips", the perfect snack and so yummy!

the middle:
the following two weren't our favorite although they were both good and we finished them. the "lomo ibérico con queso (tnf)" is a sandwich with "fermín ibérico pork loin and smoked ibérico belly, manchego cheese, crispy shallot, tomato bread". good quality ingredients but wasn't blown away by it. and the "albondigas (tnf,lf)
meatballs with cured ibérico ham in a tomato sauce that makes felix's mother proud"....the sauce would not make my mother proud but the meatballs are delish. the tomato sauce was more like paste, lackluster in flavor.

the grand finale:

the "cochinillo (lf,gf,tnf), a tradition from segovia, a quarter of a roasted suckling pig raised by sebastian bayon" is a lot of food! way too much for two people! we left uncomfortably full but no regrets! also, we mistakenly ordered this but enjoyed anyways!

the "cerdo iberico a las finas hierbas grilled 100% fermin pure ibérico pork, "skirt steak" with fresh rosemary and thyme (lf,gf,tnf)" was delicious and delightful!

the cherry on top: they gave the birthday girl a lovely magnificent popsicle wrapped in dark chocolate with cherry sorbet inside! so delectable, fresh and just right! palette cleansing!

enjoy as i know you will!

my biggest complaint of our experience here is that we wouldn't have waited 45 min to get seated if they had told us that we would still be sitting onbarstools when it was finally our time. we would have selected another restaurant. but they were gracious enough to get us tall chairs with backs. the food also, however, was not great. we had the patatas bravas and the lamb skewers. both were only okay. the lamb was not very tender and a bit hard to chew. we had higher expectations, but maybe we just caught them on an off night.

curate is one of the top restaurants in downtown asheville. if you’re in the area, perhaps to visit the gorgeous biltmore mansion, i highly recommend dinner at curate. it’s a long space, with abardown one side, and tables for four on the other, opening up to a dining area at the back. the name “curate” means “cure yourself”… and it’s true, if you’re not in a terrific mood when you step in the doorway, you will be when you’ve taken the first few bites of your meal.

for a small party of 2 or 3 people, i definitely recommend sitting at the bar, to get a great view of the open kitchen (a great way to impress a date ;) watch charcuterie plates being assembled, po

sangria... tapas... pure freshness. finally got to visit curate this evening, and it did not disappoint!! we went all in and split a pitcher of sangria between our group of 4. it was delicious, and lightly sweet like you would find in spain. we started with the bread, tomato spread, and manchego app, simple and delicious. our waitress at thebarwas fantastic and gave us great recommendations. we had the potato chip wrapped chorizo, sausage and white bean dish, and my personal favorite the goat cheese stuffed peppers. all were well prepared and so fresh tasting. i highly suggest sitting at thebarto watch the staff at work, truly amazing. cant wait to go back again!

it took two days before we could get reservations and, finally, were able to get seats at the bar. the waitress was inconsiderate, the service slow, and sitting at thebargave us an opportunity to hear the wait staff complain about the other patrons. clearly, they have enough business that they don't feel they have to impress any of the customers.

like being back in spain. my husband and i, while visiting asheville popped into curate for lunch on a friday afternoon. we were greeted by a friendly hostess and promptly seated at the bar. one look at the menu and i knew it was going to be a difficult decision; so many lovely tapas from many regions of spain.

we started with 2 glasses of sherry; a manzanilla that was floral and dry and an amazing unfiltered fino, not listed on the menu. we also enjoyed a lovely plate of jamon de bellota. perfect in its meatyness and fat. no one does ham like the spanish (sorry to the italians.)

next, we enjoyed pimientos de piquillo and the house tortilla. the peppers were stuffed with a light goat cheese that blended nicely with the picante of the peppers. the tortilla was somewhat disappointing for me. it was not solid in the middle (not sure if that was a mistake or just a choice by the chef,) but mostly tasted of the onion with little traditional tortilla flavor. we also enjoyed the rabo de toro; oxtail over a potato mousse. perfect comfort food for a chilly day.

we definitely enjoyed our afternoon at thebarand look forward to our next visit.

not as enthralled as in previous visits. we took out-of-town family to cúrate on a saturday night and generally enjoyed our dinner, but, sad to say, we were less enthralled than we've been on previous visits.

perhaps it's nitpicking, but this is not an inexpensive spot (our dinner for six with tax and tip was around $280) and it is one that aspires to the highest standards.

here were a few minuses to dinner tonight:

* the kitchen was out of both trout and one of the spanish hams. since these are specialties of the restaurant, being out of these items was surprising.

* thebardidn't have rye -- huh, what's a hipbardoing without rye these days?

* several of the tapas dishes seemed ordinary -- most notably the croquetas de pollo (chicken fritters), potatas bravas and chocolate mousse. the fried squid was greasy.

* our waiter was the biggest disappointment. i didn't pay that much attention to him, but several in our party were very put off. he slammed down water and dishes, leaned on our chairs, reached across us to place items on the table, and most distressingly, occasionally seemed to slur his words. the waiter seemed more interested in upselling us on the wine and getting us to order more than the very knowledgeable waitstaff we've had on previous visits.

on the plus side, the atmosphere was great and many of the tapas were excellent.

overall we enjoyed the evening, but frankly a recent meal at zambra (a long-established spanish tapas restaurant in asheville) was a better experience with better food.

i hope that the owners of cúrate are not spending too much time collecting accolades rather than running their restaurant. i hate to see local restaurateurs let early success go to their heads.

-----20 aug, 2012-----

i want to go back for more, more, more. now i understand what the buzz on cúrate is all about! this restaurant on biltmore avenue just south of pack square has been open over a year, and my wife has eaten here, but i put off going, thinking "oh, just another tapas place." how wrong i was!

what a delightful experience it was to have dinner here. everything we ordered was at a minimum tasty and well prepared, and some of the small plates -- the gazpacho ($5), the iberian ham ($11), the eggplant with honey ($6), the fried calamari on bread ($6) and the chocolate mousse with raspberry sorbet and hazelnut praline ($6), among others -- were absolutely fabulous. even the home-cured olives (three or four different kinds, $4) were special.

there are about three dozen small plates on the menu, not including desserts. i'm told that about 80% of the menu stays the same, though seasonal and special dishes are added.

i have to go back soon to try more, more, more.

the restaurant was full (and this was a sunday evening), and the crowd seemed to be having a great time. on friday, the only reservation we could get would have been at 5 or 9.

service was understated but prompt.

there's an interesting list of spanish wines, most moderately priced, and a nice selection of cocktails. i had a cuba libre ($9) with mount gay rum and fresh lemon, served with an individual coca-cola in a little 8 oz. bottle.

the restaurant is long and narrow, with high ceilings and exposed ducting, and we were seated in the small room at the back, which was a little quieter than the main room or the seats at the bar, but it offered a nice view of the main dining area. others have said they like sitting at the bar, to watch the chefs cook and be at the heart of the action, but note that thebarstools don't have backs.

if there's a downside, it might be that the women's restroom gets backed up, and a line forms waiting to get in. some female customers give up and just go to the men's room.

dinner for two, with two cocktails and one glass one wine, plus a shared dessert and one single espresso, came to $106 with tax and tip. well worth it.

friday afternoon, in need of  a getaway, my littlest brother and i traveled to north carolina to visit my grandparents. on saturday, the four of us drove up to asheville to walk around the city and have lunch. cãºrate is a spanish tapasbarin downtown asheville. as my degree from college of charleston is in hispanic studies, i was excited to experience some traditional spanish cuisine. cãºrate , meaning “cure yourself” had just what we needed: delicious food and wine. to drink, my grandmother and i both had a glass of the 2010 peitã¡n, albariã±o, which is similar to a pinot grigio. grandpa had a highland gaelic ale and jake had not one, but three coca colas. oh, teenagers. i was so sad when i realized i forgot the battery for my dslr at home, so i apologize that these pictures are from my cell phone. :( here we go! out of all the tapas, i was most impressed by the garlic shrimp. the sauce was so good, i kept dipping extra bread in it. i also really loved the summer salad and would
