scallops from a dredged source. i was in on the weekend for my first visit and was disappointed that the scallops on the menu were from dredged sources. it would be good to see such a nice, popularfishrestaurant getting itsfishfrom sustainable sources.

once you can see past the big, loud (usually chain) places to eat in glasgow, you find many wonderful little low-key restaurants full of locals. one of the aforementioned is a seafood place called crabshakk. it took me a while to find this place – i had been told it was on argyle street (finnieston) but they have the tiniest sign so i went past it without knowing numerous times. i viewed the menu online and it has an untraditional mix up of starters and mains so left me puzzled at first. after a few friends convincing me of it’s merits i tried to book unsuccessfully on two occasions before getting a table. we had to book a week in advance to get said table and were told that it was ‘a small table right by the door’. we took it anyway but when i arrived i was shocked that anyone could balance a meal on the shelf of a table in front of me. we’d be lucky to squeeze two plates and two glasses of wine on there so when my friend arrived we asked if there was anywhere else we could possibly go. annoying customers i know, we had been told, but it really was teeny & it was going to limit us on what we ordered. they had a couple of free stools at the back of the bar so kindly let us move there (phew) but i’d advise anyone going here to book very early in advance.

we sat with the menu for a while but no decisions were forthcoming so after lots of questions for the waiter we ordered a bunch of food to share. the staff must get asked lots of questions because the menu has no details of how things are served, if they are accompanied by anything & sometimes how things are cooked. it is half intriguing, half annoying but i am far too inquisitive to just order dishes blind. i’d been wanting to try oysters so we ordered some as a pre-starter then some crab claws and queenies to start us off.
after a few questions on oyster eating techniques the oysters went down well and i liked the vinegarette that accompanied them. i’m glad to say that i’m now an oyster eater (in other words i’ve tried them on this single occasion and liked them). i felt like a right rah drinking prosecco and eating oysters but it was a birthday meal!

the crab claws were ordered because we saw the crab cakes go out to another table and they looked small but we fancied crab so went for the claws. we had been given the appropriate tools to get the meat out, always a good start. the meat was fresh and delicate whilst having a slighty sweet taste. i would definitely order them again. my only criticism was that the portion size was small for the price – it looks bigger but there’s not much meat in them.

the other starter was picked from the specials board – queenie scallops in a coral butter. this dish was the star of the whole meal! the portion size was appropriate, the queenies were cooked perfectly and the coral butter was moreish. we loved it and if it was on the menu all the time i’d come back and order it for lunch with bread.

next to come were thefishand chips and the pasta vongole. thefishinside the batter was nice but the chips were not soft inside. they were really chunky and needed much longer cooking.

the vongole pasta was spaghetti with clams in their shells in a simple olive oil dressing and a hint of chilli. just like the rest of the seafood, the clams tasted really fresh and had a great flavour. the rest of the dish was lacking flavour though, even after we had heavily seasoned it. we agreed that it needed more chilli, more garlic, more something to bring it to life.

although that sounds like a lot of food the portions are not big so we managed dessert (we sat for at least 3 hours in total!). cheese & biscuits for the birthday girl and panna cotta for me. the panna cotta came with some stewed fruit in liqueur. i can’t remember what the waiter said it was but it wasn’t sambuca but it tasted almost liquorice like. i enjoyed the panna cotta but not the fruit liquid.

there was enough cheese and biscuits to keep us sitting for a while so that we could be nosy and listen to the couple on a first date sitting next to us. in our defence the stools are really close to each other but they were a sweet pair.

i am going to go back to crabshakk but only if i book far enough in advance to get a proper table and i’m going to order specials in the hope that they are as special as the queenies were.

just had lunch here, didn't read the urbanspoon reviews before, probably agree with the sentiments, good quality food, simply served, a bit pricy some ways (the crab a cakes 3 for £8, crab claws) but squat lobsters 12 for £8 were much better value. it is intimate and informal, forewarned is fore armed. i'd go back. thefishfinger sandwich served to one of the other tables have us food envy...

birthday treat?. had a hugely mixed/ disappointing experience of this highly acclaimed establishment - -starters chosen were a special - salt and pepper squid which was under seasoned and extremely bland as a result. my son's grilled langoustines were however a success.
i chose crab as my main expecting a hot finger licking experience - what arrived was a sorry poorly dressed example - the brown meat in the shell was a lumpy tasteless mush and was not what i expecting - as dressed crab was not on the menu. my partner chose grilled sole with a caper sauce -which was just ok but the caper sauce was over salted. my son'sfishand chips was not the success as on previous visits with the batter verging on the soggy side. service was pleasant but not exceptional - think they are taking the eye of the ball or had an off night. re the menu if you are serving crab let the customer know what it is you are giving him - dressed crab was not on the menu - but was what they were serving. very disappointed

joke of a restaurant. i was really looking forward to going to crabshakk. the tables are tiny, and the seats are so uncomfortable, my bum was still sore the next day. you are so packed in i couldn't use my left arm to eat and could only use my right hand. the tables are so small we couldn't actually fit all our plates of food on the table - what a joke! the food was really bad, thefishand chips (expensive at £10) was so soaked in grease i had to leave most of it. the others had a special of king scallops, squid tempura and mackerel - all equally disappointing and over priced. overall it was pretentious and over priced, the service was wonderful but the food was really bad and they way you are squashed in is unbearable, you have more room eating on an airplane.

can't fault the food, very tasty. however the lack of it was the problem. the crab cakes, delicious but miniscule, coin size portions that are gone in a flash. thefishcurry again lovely but let down again by portion size but it wasn't until the lid was lifted on the mussels that we looked in disbelief!!!!! never seen a smaller pot of mussels in my life, smaller than your usual starter portion, however this was crabshakk's large? atmosphere-great, service-great, food-a real let down.

disappointed. perhaps my expectations were too high.

the restaurant is good looking, stylish yet unpretentious, which is a rare combo in glasgow. yes it's a squeeze, but not too bad.

i re-read jay rayner's review in the observer from last year before writing this and sadly some of the prices have almost doubled since then. 3 crab claws for £12 is simply too expensive (6.95 in his review). tasty claws but nothing special.

three small crabcakes for 7.95 seemed like a rip-off when one of them was burnt. tasty olive oil on the salad leaves though, well chosen, chef.

the club sandwich lacked imagination. how about some sour dough bread? a couple of avocado slices? some horseraddish? anything other than the predictable lettuce and mayo on cold white toast would have been much appreciated. cheap on thefishportion it was too, and this for £11. not good enough, could get a better one in pret a manger or m&s...

the skinny fries were pointless and the fat chips tasted offish(in a bad way). this is usually avoided in the simplest chippie!

the homemade mayo that came with the crabs was the high point of this meal. but we all know that homemade mayo always hits the spot, it's an easy trick. if you want to have some with your chips it's an extra 95p by the way.

service was helpful and nice but food took ages to arrive. music was awful and seemed to reflect on the white middle-aged clientele; sting, moby(!!) and johnny cash. "ring of fire" played at least three times during our 2 hours in the joint.

escaped before dessert.

this is a seriousfishrestaurant thank goodness. this review is based on a short lunch. six oysters shared between two were extremely fresh followed by crab cakes that were flakily full of crab my partner had thefishclub sandwich and is still raving about it. glasses of white house wine were perfect. the décor feels very new york. it's small but i'd be surprised if they are not opening a larger place soon
