great lunch. i had the greek gyro platter. i've lived in europe and had authentic greek food and this was right on par. the seafood bisque was great that came with it. i thought it was a little pricey but for the amount of food i got it was well worth the $11.00. i read some of the bad reviews and took a chance and glad i did. cant tell you if the american style cooking is good but the greek is great!

city cafe diner gets an f for cleanliness. went to café diner 2nd trip. had a semi pleasant dining experience the first visit after waiting awhile for meal the waiter made up by being attentive. 2nd visit rolls were underdone in the center, pure dough unbaked. when it came time to leave my6 yr daughter opened her to go cup she had been drinking from to get some pepsi to go and to our horror the cup had brown sticky looking gunk smeared all over it which she did not see when they first brought it due to the pepsi filling the cup and a lid being on the cup. when i brought it to the attention of the waitress and asked to see the supervisor he was very defensive and tried to take the cup to throw it away. i literally had to take the cup out of his hand and let him know the health dept. would be informed. it took every ounce of my being not to throw up all over the table. not even an apology!

repeatedly horrible service. one visit the waitress sat at a booth two over and called her boyfriend to complain that two customers came in just when she was getting ready to take a break. food was okay that night. another trip, it took an hour to get our food despite it being a quiet 9pm thursday night. waiter did not know menu, but was nice at least. my food was inedible - country fried steak hockey puck with rubber eggs. i said something to the manager, hoping he'd take it off the bill since i did not eat it, but all he did was give us a slice of stale cake.

great food, excellent service, will definitely eat there again! prices are very, very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. it's a diner, not a fancy restaurant so don't expect a cultural experience on par with a night at the opera. if you like really good food, a big selection, at a good price- then city cafe diner is a good pick!

a real treat. we found this to be an excellent place to eat. the service was good, the food was prepared and served in a timely manner and the food was very tasty. the staff checked on us without being pushy. the place was clean and the tables were bused in a timely manner. the menu should satisfy anyone who comes in the door. we found the noise a bit loud but when requested they turned it down. we will be returning.

excellent place to eat. my husband had eaten here before and this was my first time to visit the city cafe in huntsville. i ordered the french dip and fries. my husband ordered the 3-way: shrimp, bbq and pork chop. our order was to our table very quick and the food was hot and very delicious. the amount of food we received was more than either one of us could eat. our waitress, mary, was very friendly and answered any questions we had about the menu. she continually checked on us making sure we had eveything we needed. i like the fact that the menu is loaded with choices of food. it offers a wide variety of soups and salads, burgers, steak, fish, shrimp, pasta dishes, greek dishes and more. the dessert selection was unique with a wide variety to choose from. this way anyone can find some kind of dessert to suit their taste.
also, the temperature in the restaurant was very pleasant. i usually have to wear a jacket in most restaurants because it is too cold inside. this was good since i didn't have to shiver while finishing my meal. i was very satisfied with my first visit. this is definately a place we will visit more often now.
every restaurant is going to have some bad reviews but the only way to find out for yourself is to go there and try it.

blah - won't be going back. oct., 2012: i selected this place for a small group (6) colleagues for a work luncheon last friday. my trepidation was the gigantic menu, b/c seriously, who can successfully create 300+ dishes?! however, it is new, and convenient to work, and the prices could accommodate different budgets. of note immediately were, a. the noise level (super loud, as in can't hear the person next to you loud) and b. how packed the place was with cubicle jockey types scarfing down massive plates of food.
first our group was inappropriately divided up between 2 adjacent 4-top tables (hello, we are a group, that means we want to sit together), then moved to a larger table. our bubbly waitress launched into her explanation of the menu. (not necessary, we get it, it's a big menu -- what are the specials, if any??). i stuck with breakfast, which was ok, except for having to ask for my side of turkey sausage 3 times, even after discussing it with the manager on duty (mod). when it arrived, right at check time, the turkey sausage was just like jimmy dean's frozen and it was overcooked. my breakfast dish selection was the "hobo banquet," a skillet full of hash brown potatoes topped with melted cheese and two eggs any style. it was not served in a skillet, but on a plate, i didn't taste any cheese and the potatoes were largely diced spuds, not your typical hash browns-- all woefully under seasoned. the eggs were delightful, though! they did the eggs right!

other oddities: a colleague ordered her omelet without mushrooms and instead got extra mushrooms; the waitress brought an "extra plate of food the kitchen had made, in case anyone wanted it;" our drink glasses were often empty; and the only compensation/acknowledgement for the mistake in the overly mushroomed dish was that it was ignored (by all, including the manager) until it was nicely removed from her bill. soooo, for over an hour, she is staring at a plate of her least-favorite food: shrooms!
a super-low-maintenance colleague ordered the spanakopita and ate nearly all of his, and his wife had some type of stuffed bell pepper dish. she is not one to complain, but i noticed less than half of her plate was touched and another tried the chicken cordon bleu, which he described as very bland. to their credit, city café diners' desserts are apparently wonderful and i was surprised at how gigantic each dessert item is! huge! the dessert prices gave us all sticker shock as the honoree of the luncheon loves desserts and picked 3 cookies and a slice of cake "to go." the price? 23.00!!!!

the waitress was apologetic, the manager on duty was, too, and they both mentioned that they've" only been open 6 weeks and are 'slammed' and to please try us again when things settle down" on our way out. i won't be back. the service is slow, but not heartless, the food is woefully forgettable and the crowd is noisy and cumbersome. i wish them luck, but, they're not even up to speed with their "partial" menu, now, so, unfortunately, i don't anticipate the dining experience here will improve. hopefully, for them, they will prove me wrong! good luck!

breakfast: below average at best. this is the first(also likely last) time i have eaten here. i had not read or heard anything about it just wanted a diner style breakfast and blue plate is always busy saturday morning. first let me say it was crowded but we were able to sit right away, the staff were friendly so issues what soever with that. the place seemed clean, so no issues there as well. the menu seems to have 1000 items on it, but again we came here for breakfast. i had a large ultimate breakfast and everything was average or below on taste. the bacon was quite bad, tasted like cardboard(very cheap kind for sure). the sausage was above average however. i hate places that use supercheap condiments, like the worst cheapest syrup they could get and the ultracheap margerine packs, and this is one of those places. for 2 adults, 2 kids it was 48 bucks before tip and it seems a bit overpriced for sure. i could have eaten craker barrel and as cheap or cheaper and better to be honest. again the staff were great, maybe the lunch or dinner would be better but i wish i had read reviews before eating here. from what it seems this place is known for large portions on lunch and dinner and mediocre food at best.

fyi they brought one order of toast, since thats all we wanted. how can you mess that up, it had to be that really cheap terrible bread with some horrible margerine because it was bad. my 8 year old said she could not even eat it and when i tried it really was terrible.

very disappointed. we ate there once and it was great. the second time we went we walked to the dessert bar. we waited and waited for the girl behind the counter to ask us if she could help us. an african american couple walked in the door and she ask them first. the nice lady stated that we were there first. she grudgingly took our order then took the other ladies. then, she still gave them their order first. we will absolutely never eat there for any reason.

went there last night. i ordered chicken salad wrap with steak fries. my husband got sausage egg omelet with hashbrowns. our waitress did not know half the questions we asked her about the menu. my chicken salad had no seasoning. salt and pepper would have been nice. steak fries were cut potatoes fried almost burnt. my husband's hashbrowns were nasty semi shredded potatoes with no seasoning. then we got desserts, for a slice of cake and pie it was $7.50 each!!!!!! the cake (strawberry shortcake) was very under seasoned a little sugar would be nice. i will not be going to this under season plates of food and way overpriced again.

good food...overwhelming menu!. after some friends told me of their recent visits to city cafe and the extremely diverse menu, my wife and i had to try it out first hand. upon arrival, we were seated promptly and our waitress (shamir) was quite attentive and more than happy to help us navigate the menu. it was indeed very expansive and diverse. while we carefully studied it, shamir brought out a large sweet bread with butter and some spanakopita (spinach pies), standard pre dinner items that were appreciated. my wife and i finally decided on a greek dish called "pastichio", which is a greek version of lasagna and the "odd couple", which consisted of a sirloin steak and stuffed tilapia. surprisingly, with those two platters, you also received a cup of soup and a salad. the soup, a greek lemon chicken soup, was incredibly delicious with a robust lemony taste. both entrees were served on large metal platters with healthy portions of greek potatoes, rice and vegetables. the steak was cooked perfectly and the stuffed tilapia was very flavorful and moist. my wife was also very pleased with the pastichio, which she has had on previous occasions at other restaurants in boston. we were so full after the main meal that we didn't even take a second look at their vast desert bar, but plan to on our next visit. the prices were a little higher than normal diners, however, as many other reviewers have indicated, there's enough food for left overs the next day and perhaps the day after. we both really enjoyed our meal and the atmosphere, which is very kid friendly. i will say that their breakfasts look terrific and is on my radar for our next visit. overall, a very good restaurant with so much to offer that it could be some time before you run out of things to order here.

never had a stringy salisbury steak before.....don't recommend dish. i had to cut it with a steak knife. we've had breakfast there and sandwiches, and was good, but not for the price. also, their food is under seasoned. not sure how they can have so many different dishes and keep quality at the same time. obviously it could be seen with the salisbury steak.

over priced cafeteria food. stay away.. the food is bland at best. i sent the caesar sald back because it was served with iceberg lettuce and smothered in what only somewhat resembled caesar salad dressing. the bread dips served before the meal were not good. two teenage boys would not even eat the pasta and shrimp dinners. food had the flavor of a hospital cafeteria. far short of what you would expect for a $55 meal for three people before tip. a huge menu offering and the insane amount of food they serve does make up for high price and poor quality. the portions are rediculous!! nobody needs that much food. for bland food i would give a restauraunt a 2nd chance. because of the prices though we won't be back.

good food and lots of choices. food was super. desserts were so good. this was my husband's second visit. he went for breakfast the first time and said the french toast was excellent. my spanikopita this trip was so good. it was light and buttery and was seasoned so perfectly. i could not have asked for better. my daughter got a chicken dish stuffed with crab meat and topped with asparagus (kind of like chicken oscar but had a different name). it was perfectly cooked. vegetables were delicious and not overcooked at all. soup was good and bread was great. we enjoyed it quite a bit. prices were a little high but when you get enough food to bring home and have a full meal later, it is worth it.
