very limited vegetarian/vegan options. i saw this under "best vegan friendly restaurants" in tampa bay on urbanspoon and wanted to set the record straight: they have maybe one vegan/vegetarian selection as far as entrees go.

after having visited the restaurant twice and being told the curries were suitable for vegans, we found out on the third visit that the paste they use for the curries (pre-made, i guess) already has fish sauce in it. so you can't get the curries without fish sauce. we were told that there is only one fish-sauce-free entree, which if i recall corrrectly is the thai basil.

we were disappointed, because we had asked the same questions each visit but got a different answer the third time.

so unless you're one of those vegetarians who considers fish vegetarian, not a lot of choices here.

the food was good, service horrible. they did the ol’ dump the food and run and never saw anyone again until the check. we had wasabi and spicy grouper with no drinks at all... (we paid for the them.) should have eaten from the food trucks.

had some of the best thai food last night that i've eaten in forever at chiang mai thai & sushi. the place is located in a newish strip mall, smack-dab in the middle of scientologyland, but the interior ambiance was not short on far-eastern zen elegance. reading reviews online, i found that the restaurant generally received a composite score of less than four stars on major review sites (usually a red flag for me). reading further, i surmised that the service was keeping chiang from reaching its full potential, as that's what most folks b!+c#ed about. i figured our group of four wasn't in any hurry, so we took the plunge.

perhaps this evenings performance should not be used as the bell weather for all to pass judgement as another visit is certainly warranted.

a bit overwhelmed by the capacity crowd next door at the capitol theater, many looking for a pre-show board, they had chiang mai racing tonite...... and the food was excellent!

wonderful surprise. we just moved to this area and are discovering new (for us) restaurants. from the outside you can't tell much about the restaurant, but it's lovely inside. the service was friendly and fast and the server answered any questions we had about the food. i had one of my favorite dishes, the chicken in red curry sauce—which was perfect—and my husband had the pepper steak. that was also good but the beef (as often happens) was a bit tough. i forgot the name of the soup but it was the coconut based chicken soup that is spicy sweet and delicious. we're going back today for a second taste test.

completely satisfying. this restaurant is terribly underrated in our opinion. we had the best thai meal of my life (so far). the crab rangoons were outstanding & left us wanting another order; my panang curry w/ chicken was served in a very large (fish) ceramic bowl, & w/ jasmine rice i ate the whole thing. the chicken particularly was different in that it was sliced to the point of being shaved, extremely tender. my wife had the "amazing" w/ chicken. she's not a big fan of thai cuisine, but she loved her dish & said she would return. both of us got peanut sauce in our dishes. the peanuts were chopped & a delightful departure from the usual half nuts.

one final point: had we not met friends at chiang mai thai & sushi we probably would never have experienced the great food & charm (decor & staff) of this place. you see, the consumer ratings had it scored at 72, and as a rule i don't consider dining anywhere that carries a rating under 80. only the convincing of our friends who have dined there many times allowed me to go. they were right.

the menu on this website needs to be updated though. both of our entrees were priced at $9.99 each, not the $13.00 listed here; an extra order of jasmine was $2.00, not $1.00. the crab rangoon was $7.99, no mention of this appetizer on this site's menu whatsoever. our total tab amounted to $56.00 w/ tax & tip, which we considered a good value.

rude manager. food is ok but the manager was soooooooooooo rude. she honored my groupon but was a real jerk about it. nowhere in the fine print did it say we were limited to the dinner menu and tip was included. my boyfriend and i asked if we could pull out a separate bill and order $30+ worth of full priced extra food from the lunch menu. at first she was perfectly happy about it and put in our order. she changes her mind and comes back 10 minutes later. i kept asking our server whats wrong about not using our groupon for some other items; he would just come back and say "sorry, my manager says it's not ok." it was a bit pricey as well; $7 curry puffs, $11 pad see ew/pad thai. did not refill my water once. i find thai restaurants usually have the best service and kindest servers, but not at this place.. was not worth the drive from st. pete and i'll just continue to eat at thai am.

long story short, curry puffs great, pad thai/pad see ew mediocre, worst management i've ever seen at a thai restaurant.

oh boy!. i actually like the darn food. but
1. pricing a little expensive for no shrimp
2. waitress was rude, like i owed her a tip
3. the meal was not worth to tip

the sauce was amazing, i ordered the shrimp curry, and the shrimp was skimpy and overcooked. i actually rather have had the dish w.o the seafood.

next time i go...if i go back, i'll ordered my food w.o any meats.

forced to order off dinner menu to use a groupon. had a groupon to use. only restriction was that you must dine in and cannot be used for specials or fourth fridays. restaurant would not let us order off the lunch menu. so it cost us $10 more but it cost them a customer and who knows how many people will read this. food did not taste good after this experience. they also have signs up in the dining area stating that they may choose to impose a 15% tip for parties of less than five regardless of the service. 20% for parties of five or more. regardless of service?

good food, deceptive receipt. i have eaten at chiang mai many times and the food is consistently good, the restaurant and presentation of the food are exceptional. we like the thai curries, chinese dishes, pad thai, sushi, and thai salads.

however, the last two times i have been there after giving my credit card i have been presented with a receipt that says in all caps "pre-tip amt" only to find out that a 15% tip has already been added to the total. this last time i was there, one of the servers told me it was included, but otherwise i might have thought that i would have the opportunity to add the tip i felt was appropriate, based on the service i received. i don't like having the tip added ahead, especially when the group eating is not large, and particularly when the receipt makes it appear that this is not the case. nor would i appreciate tipping a server twice unknowingly.

not satisfied. although the food is not exactly poor, and they have healthy dishes to choose from, the menu is a little misleading. ordered a shrimp dish that literally had just two pieces of shrimp in it. ordered a noodle dish that didn't have the correct noodles that were listed on the menu.. and trust me i know my noodles! just ended up with food i didn't want, basically, and there wasn't much i could do about it, it was take out. tastes okay. not horrible but not the best i've had by any means.
