alice waters has long been well-known amongst epicureans, locavores, and nothern californians. but lately she has garnered more widespread attention by calling for the obamas to plant an organic white house garden and through her increasing appearances on

our visiting dignitaries from minnesota, miss m and nephew e, wished to make the pilgrimmage to the revered temple of foodliness, chez panisse. it’s amazing how many famous chefs have worked there, joyce goldstein, judy rodgers, suzanne goin, mark peel, p

good food, dismissive attitude. i had the halibut tartare, goat shoulder, and pluot tart, which were all fine.

however, both our maitre d' and our server were at best brusque, at worst rude. the word "please" is apparently not part of their vocabulary, as in "please have a seat." instead we were told to "just sit there." menus were not handed to us; they were thrown onto the table. when our table was ready, the maitre d' simply grabbed the menus out of our hands and walked off without saying anything. we could see that other guests were being treated in the same manner, which might have been less odd if it had been extremely busy or if it were a $5 taqueria. but for a couple hundred bucks, i was expecting better. i will not be going back.

excellent fare!. 4/4 stars! - i visited chez panisse for the first time on a thursday evening. although...the price goes up as the week progressess, it is well worth it. the main dining floor, although snug offers elegance and superb ambiance, the wait staff is excellent and timely...the fare phenomenal (every course). definitely worth the splurge. my favorite restaurant in the east bay, thus far. only downside is finding available parking on the street. pricey - $60+ and up as the week progresses

as a foodie i wouldn't be worth my salt until making the pilgrimage to the place the helped revive america's interest in honest, well made food. we dined upstairs and the simply prepared food let the great ingredients shine through. the restaurant fully lived up to its reputation.

a landmark. i had a fantastic meal at chez panisse. alice waters is the godmother of california cuisine, and this is the holy land.

for an equally great meal at a lower price try the upstairs cafe at this fine establishment.

can't wait to go back!. i felt like i was sitting in some ones kitchen, but in a really fancy house. chez panisse is really doing it right, from the fresh locally grown produce to the friendly warm and welcoming service. you get the food, feel and service of a five star restaurant without the snobby pretension.

we hadn’t been here before, and were really impressed by the execution of a simple menu. we went for a weeknight dinner and were offered one small tasting menu. just four courses seemed tiny compared to most restaurants’ lengthy tasting menus nowadays, bu

great dining. ask for a tour of the kitchen. it is beautiful. i'm reading a platter of figs and other recipes, david tanis' new cookbook (he's their executive chef). the book gives great insight to the great care they take in preparing meals at chez panisse.

mmmm! good!. well...we did it! made it back to sf and to berkeley. this is a lovely space. and the late summer eve was beautiful. what a wonderful if unpretentious meal. lasted 2 hours, wine parings and candlelight. definately more than once in a lifetime!

beautiful organic lunch. if you fly in to oakland in the morning, do not pass go, do not collect $200.00, pick up your rental car and go to berkely for lunch at alice water's 'chez panisse'. if you're too early for lunch you can go by kermit lynch's retail wine store in the same area first and browse his excellent french selection.
you won't find fresher, more inventively prepared organic food than what's available at chez panisse. if the halibut carpaccio with chervil is on the menu, don't think. just order it. if your city has a nonstop to oakland, i think you might agree it's worth the trip just for lunch...

worthy of the legend. i love chez, though the cost restricts it to special occasions (for me at least). my favorite memory there is when i ordered the "white peach" for dessert (for $8), and was served a single whole peach on a plate with just a knife. while kind of ridiculous, the peach was really quite good.
