definitely worth a trip when wining and dining in edinburgh. the set meal that they offer isgreatvalue, a tenner-you canni whack it! salad, bread and ham as you come in and pick from the decent menu options, and the goats cheese starter and steak for main are fab. good choices and everyone always leaves happy.

went there on a business dinner and it was a very nice experience. delicious food, reasonably priced and agreatambience. only bad thing is that we were a bit crammed, most likely because our group of 16 was a bit too big. but hey, i'd likely go back anytime.

been to "chez jules" many times over the last 2 years, and i am yet to be disappointed.being french, i look at french restaurant with a rather overly critical eye, and i have to say, they got it spot on:greatatmosphere, fab music (all french classics), the smell isgreat(yep, it matters!).
the food is not the fancy nonsense people expect from french restaurant, so no 1/2 mini carrot sitting on a sliver of steak. you get country-side proper portion (i know, i grew up in the french countryside :p).i'd recommend the steak and lobster. the snails and frogs are also fab. you get nice salad, saussisson, bread and olives on the table. but you know, merguez, roast chicken, black pudding... all good.. all very good :d

i had heard so many wonderful things about chez jules, so i thought it was about time that i check them out. i love the vibe inside so much, art work on the walls and dimmed lighting. it has such a cosy feeling inside. as soon as we were settled at our table, bread, olives, lettuce and salami was brought to our able which was a lovely touch. we all ended up ordering steak and i was pleased to find the service was really quick as i was one hungry lady. the rump steak was delicious and cooked exactly how i wanted it to be. i ended up getting some fries on the side which were pretty lovely too. after our mains, we ordered some coffee but i couldn't exactly not have a dessert. i ended up going for the crepe which was incredibly tasty but i did find it odd that i was given a spoon for it. the spoon was perfect for the ice cream (which was quite possible the tastiest ice cream) but made eating my crepe a little on the tricky side. overall agreatlittle find and i can see myself going back pretty soon!

been to chez jules for lunch and really enjoyed it. food, place, service, decoration were legit good. the portions could be larger however it's totally worth it for the price you're paying. lunch menu 3 courses for £9,90.
i had goat cheese, coq au vin and creme caramel. my friend had pate campagne, skirt steak and same desert. everything was very tasty but i didn't like the desert.
overall it's agreatplace to try something you don't normally eat on our daily bases for a cheap menu.
i did take a lot of pics so enjoy!

ps.: lunch menu goes from 12 - 16
and i'm definitely going back for the 6oz steak and half lobster

chez jules is reckoned by some as a bit of a find, with a delightful, candlelit interior, french service, and food with stonkingly good prices, there shouldn't be a lot to dislike.

s.o. and i went for one of our celebratory meals, so whilst supping on prosecco we perused the extensive menu. i had eaten there the week before, choosing the half lobster which was justgreatserved up with french fries. on this occasion, we went for duck confit and smoked salmon to start and both the steaks for main.

i really liked the touch that the complementary charcuterie provided. it seems to me quite civilized to have a languorous meal in sumptuous surroundings, with bread and meat and pickles just a pre-requisite. our starters arrived looking suitably rustic. i found my salmon to be cut quite thickly, and though i'm all for big portions it felt somehow less enjoyable. s.o. wasn't impressed with the haphazard traditional plating, and found the flavours fell a bit short of what he expected. i, on the other hand, loved the luscious duck meat that flaked off of the bone.

our steaks were cooked perfectly. i adored the potato dauphinoise that it came with, and was totally distraught that i couldn't finish it despite my best attempts. all that bread at the beginning clearly did my no favours. overall, we found our mains to be excellent.

finally, i felt quite in the mood for some crepes, and asked if rather than coming with ice cream, could i possibly have some chantilly instead? they duly obliged, and i have to say the cream was the only part i liked, as the orange sauce was just too rich for my tastes.

i really like chez jules. i can see what all the fuss is about, as the experience is overwhelmingly continental. however, s.o. found it distinctly below par and much prefers his fine dining. i suppose it's a matter of taste, but take it from me, you won't go a wanting.

n.b. their lunch menu is extraordinarily priced!
