we decided to sit at the bar for dinner. it was agreatdecision as we were warmly welcomed by saige. the service was prompt, but much more importantly, we genuinely felt appreciated for coming to sit at the bar. when it was saige’s time to go home, she handed us off to lamar.

lamar makes awesome drinks. his gin and tonic from his own recipe is unique and outstanding. the medley of flavors in his drinks really adds to the meal. from soups to appetizers to the main courses, we truly enjoyed all the food, but most of all, we enjoyed the warmth of the staff. we would definitely come back to sit at the bar to eat and drink.

the ribeye steak was delicious as was the rest of the food. our waiter was also reallygreattoo. the thing that was odd is that the sommelier (or what seemed like a sommelier) brought out our champagne and wine to the table already poured. it seemed a bit like she just plonked it in front of us without us seeing the bottle or offering a taste. for these prices i would expect the bottle to be brought to the table, tasted and then poured.

charlie palmer is good as it gets. having had the pleasure of enjoying a wonderful mix of dc area restaurants it was a joy to eat tonight at charlie palmer's. even in the midst of august, the venue was bustling and projectinggreatexcitement with a packed house. my meal was delicious especially since i had salmon and it was prepared to my exact request. attentive service made it worth booking a repeat visit soon. for those with generous corporate budgets, inquire about their rooftop setting with spectacular hill and dc vistas.

indifferent service mars an otherwisegreatdining experience. i've dined here many times --- unbeatable view of the capital, fantastic menu and reasonably deep wine list. the food never disappoints but the service is getting more and more stretched. not just the usual annoyances --- water service, bread service, etc --- but in general, a lack of attention to what's going on at a table and no pace or tempo to plate course servings. not what i expect when i drop $1000 plus on a meal.

...andgreatfish too!. restaurant week used to be a fun diversion in the lull between summer and the frenzied start of fall. now it seems like a competitive sport, especially if you just want to go to a regular haunt for a meal. i was unable to get into a favorite spot but landed a table at charlie palmer steak. i have been there a number of times when my expense account-equipped brother comes to town and want to take me to dinner someplace expensive. he orders agreatbottle of wine and we tuck in. the steaks are perfectly cooked as are their sides. i am always leery of their fish. this lunchtime visit for restaurant week i was happily surprised that their deft hand at meat works just as well with fish. black bass was tender and perfectly moist and the crab cake was sweet and beautifully seasoned with only enough bread crumbs to hold the shape. the 'signature' cole slaw that came with the crab cake was interesting - heavy on carrots and with an undertone of herbs (perhaps tarragon?) that made it stand out - but in an indeterminate manner. i am still trying to figure out is i really liked it to whether i was just trying to figure out what was in it. we also ordered some fries that were a bit on the greasy side and came with a chipotle aioli - an idea that sounds good but was overly smoky. the extensive wine list has some incredible bottles on it but has recently added a category in both red and white of 25 bottles under $25. this is agreatidea that is very considerate of the customer's wallet and yet exposes them to somegreatwines that are affordable. service here is outstanding and we has a most handsome, charming, and efficient waiter who headed a team that kept our glasses filled and the courses evenly paced. what i believe most people think of as a too pricy restaurant for only special events can be a rather affordable steakhouse if one is a bit clever at ordering - restaurant week or not. good job!
