uncomfortable dining arrangement. cold vegetables, soggy and chewy chips and more importantly the stone grillsteakexperience wasn't satisfying.

what fantastic experience, from the moment we walked in the door to the moment we left, all staff were smiling and happy to attend to anything our group required.
the oysters are possibly some of the best i have tasted, fresh and well seasoned/marinated.
thesteaki ate topped with a soft shell crab was nothing short of perfection.
i will definitely be going back when i’m next in town.

it's a bittersweet experience. the food tastes 4/5 and the service was also great. coming here as a tourist, i had lots expectations. it started off really well and i was more than happy to give the restaurant a rating of 4. the only drawback to the experience was when they forgot our orders and rushed to cook everything. as you can see in the last 2 photos, mysteakwas rare when i have ordered medium rare. it went downhill after all they could do is to reheat thesteakand not to give a new one. i'll revisit and give another review in the future.

got a last minute reservation. for an early dinner. staff seemed a bit confused when i arrived - definitely not a warm friendly welcome by young woman at the front or the tall burly bloke that she passed me on to. perhaps they thought i was the delivery guy. ;)

ordered the rib eyesteakfrom the kitchen - instead of the volcanic stone cook-it-yourself option. trust their chefs to do a better job than me (hopefully they have some volcanic stone in their kitchen if it's that good!). no point going to a good restaurant to do the cooking myself (korean bbq excepted)...

decided to try the scallops starter too, which they accommodated even though it was several minutes after mysteakorder.

verdict:

scallops were delicious - tender, juicy and delicate, melt in your mouth texture. however, overpowered by the strong spicy flavour of the sauce, which would have worked well for a another more robust dish. left most of the sauce uneaten.

steak was tender and tasty.  have had marginally better before but at a much higher price point. the highlight of the plate though were the fantastic chat potatoes. beautiful flavour and texture. wonderful surprise instead of the usual bland, over-salted chips. green veg was good too and helped ease my health conscience.after the red meat.

despite the ordinary start, glad i visited...

the service was exceptional. we were seated, ordered, and received, food, and drinks, within 10 or 15 minutes. this was without the quality of the food being compromised or any evidence that the food was cooked prior to it being ordered.

i ordered the eye-fillet with moroccan spices. thesteakwas generously portioned. it came on a grillstone which i thought might be a gimmick but it is a fantastic way of cooking meat. thesteakcooked quickly, evenly, without burning, without drying, without sticking to the cooking surface, and without need for oil. the end result was a juicy, thick, beautifully cooked steak. the sirloin was accompanied by a peppercorn sauce but it was so delicious per se that i felt there was no utility to the sauce. the steak, as far as i could tell, was seasoned with coriander seeds, rosemary, garlic, and turmeric. i added a parsimonious dusting of salt and it was the beststeaki ever had. my meal was chaperoned by baked potatoes and green vegetables. the baked potatoes had a thick, crispy, shell and were soft and fluffy inside. two distinct textures and qualities within a single vegetable portends at least two modes of cookery. the green vegetables were composed of broccolini and bok-choi. these were simply steamed but are a nice supplement to the dish.

the cataract on paterson offered me a novel, and memorable , experience with one of the most traditional dishes i can think of (steak with chips, or baked potatoes and salad, or vegetables). moreover, thesteakwas markedly better than any i have had before. altogether this place provides extremely attentive service, exposure to new, and interesting, methods of cooking, and a far superior interpretation on a dish that i have tried countless times before.

won't be rushing back to this restaurant. arrived to a fairly empty restaurant as we book for an early dinner. no such luck. waited two hours for our meal. when asked where are meals were excuses were coming from the kitchen about how long it took to cook steak. when the food finally arrived medium raresteakwas well done and salmon not cooked. clearly needed more staff in the kitchen!

spoiled an otherwise great holiday. booked for 7.15pm on a wednesday night.
ordered within 10 minutes of arriving. got several apologies for how long it was taking for our food to arrive. it finally did...after 1hr and 10 minutes!...we were about to leave...the kids (12 and 11) were almost asleep at the table. how long does it take to dish up a plate of kids pasta, two pieces of kids pizza, a rawsteakon a hot rock and a chicken dish?
although they said to wait 20 minutes for the chicken because it's prepared fresh..
we waited 70 minutes....
they offered us a free icecream dessert but the kids were way beyond it by now as it was past 9.10pm when the promised dessert arrived...
it spoiled our last night in tasmania.
