too much fat on stead and plantains dry. after reading all the great reviews, i expected a very positive experience atcafekacao. i tried to take my family to dine here last sunday and called at 12pm - the male on the phone stated that they were out of food and would be closing at 1pm; this is understandable being mother's day and thus has no effect on this review. i went with a friend today at 3pm, 5/14/11 and there were two other groups in the restaurant. the interior was decorated nicely. we wanted to try the horchata, guatemalean hot chocolate, or atol de elote, but none of these were available.
my friend ordered the tikal breakfast and i chose the carne asada. a soup with elbow macaroni and green onions was brought to us - it was lukewarm but was nice as a starter. our previous experiences with guatemalean food were our three visits to cocina guatelinda, thus comparison will be made with them.cafekacao looks more upscale and appealing compared to guatelinda. our two entrees came out and was very elegant - the plating is done very well. the potato salad looks better than at guatelinda - as for taste , they were almost identical. my friend liked his eggs. i had his sausage and it was very good. when it came to the main item on our plates, the flank steaks, it was terrible. they look gorgeous on the plate and fancier than guatelinda, but after taking a bite, it's obvious that appearance alone will not guarantee a delicious steak. there wasn't much flavor in it and a ton of fat on it! my friend had to spit out his first bite as it was too difficult to chew and proceeded to cutting out much of the fat; half of his flank steak could not be eaten due to the amount of fat on it. my steak was also bland but had slightly less fat. still, this is much more fat than the flank steaks at guatelinda (i don't recall ever having to cut out fat on their steaks).the beans were decent, but the spanish rice tasted similar to packaged spanish rice. we finish what we could of the steak and proceeded to the plantains. they were fried but were not warm in temperature and very dry, as if they had been cooked in the morning and served hours later. we decided we better skip the dessert.
cafekacao wins on interior looks and plating but it comes down to taste and unfortunately it's mediocre at best. i kept wishing i was at guatelinda instead. improvements could be made by using better cuts of steak and cooking the plantains once they're ordered.

don't like being stared at while i eat. i've been here three times, and while the food and service are good, i just won't be dining here anymore. my main issue stems from the fact that every time i have eaten here, (9am, 10am, and noon on saturday or sunday) there have been about 10-15 people standing inside the restaurant, waiting for tables, and just staring at me while i eat.cafekacao, your restaurant is small, popular, and too crowded to feel comfortable.

authentic guatemalan - a must try!.cafekacao is home to one of the few restaurants that have guatemalan food. we came around noon for the lunch rush, and was not disappointed. we indulged in some flautas and burrito, and even a horchata smoothie. the food dishes were hot and flavorful, and the smoothie was to die for (we had to force ourselves to sip, since we both wanted to down it all in one go). if you like latin american food, this is a place for you, and if you are trying to find something unique and/or different, an even better place for you!

the good: this was my first.... the good:
this was my first time going tocafekacao. it was very busy but only about a 30 minute wait for saturday morning. the food was amazing! the quality and variety was great. they didn't have a problem with our large group or accommodating some special orders.

the bad:
it took awhile for our food to come. it was over 30 minutes. we were asked to leave after being seated for an hour and a half. they said it was their policy to ask people to leave after they had been there for an hour and a half. for a large group this is unreasonable. with the food arriving after 30 minutes we had less than an hour to visit, eat and drink. we did not have time to finish everything. the man who seemed to be the manager (not our server) was the one who asked us to leave.

one of my favorite restaurants. i absolutely love this restaurant because the food is amazing and affordable. i'm the type of person who gets the same thing every time, but atcafekacao i always get something different just because everything i've tried so far is amazing!

so im very big on presentation of food. if its off for me i get highly upset. slight variations i understand. i ask my waiter why there was no chocolate drizzled over my french toast, he said he would ask & then brings me a side of chocolate. oh i didn't know i had to create my plate presentation. it seemed that the crew was more concerned with closing for brunch & regular known customers. i did like the coating outside crunch of the french toast. ive eaten @ every brunch spot in the city. i held high accountability when a few people said
"best french toast". it was good, but i wouldn't say the best. the waiter informed me they closed @ 2pm. well i will be back in to try lunch. i don't like when waiters don't ask me "how my food is or if i need anything". this makes me as a newbie tocafekacao not feel welcomed.i did tip despite, because im a foodie. well i have no appetite so i have to leave and go eat somewhere else.

doesn't get any better. wife and i finally got in to trycafekacao for breakfast recently and are only sorry we didn't go sooner. their food is superb, to say the least, and the service was equally excellent. i tried their huevos rancheros, which was the best version of that dish i've ever had. we will most certainly be back, no doubt fairly soon.

decent - but some things can go. we triedcafekacao this week and were generally satisfied. some things are wonderful - green salsa, plantains, corn tortillas(soft, thick, and fresh!), and our entrees had a tasty beef steak. for the most part, we were pretty impressed by the quality and unique flavors for the price.

a few things got in the way of total amazement:
1) decor - old wendy's perhaps
2) side "salad" - iceberg lettuce and cheap cheese, seemed unnecessary.
3) skip the chips and salsa- chips were ok, but 2 of the 3 dips are tasteless, and the good one(the green one) comes with most meals anyway.

all of those seem pretty small potatoes - don't let it get in the way of trying something neat at kacao.

we went tocafekacao because it had a 95% approval rating and great reviews. when we arrived the parking lot was full and there was a wait over 25 minutes, so we thought it had to be great. after we were sat and ordered our food, we waited over 50 minutes to receive our breakfast. according to the server, our food was given to another table, but she quickly made up for it by giving us chips and salsa to tide us over saying it would be out next. that was not true. we watched 3 tables receive their food after that and tables that were sat after us leave before i finally called the server over. she apologized once again and then went back to the kitchen to get our food. once we received our food, i was very disappointed. it was under seasoned, soggy, heavily oiled chips tossed with eggs, i had to dig to find where they hid the cherizo. my husband ordered the steak and eggs. the plantains were the best thing on his plate. the rest was just ok. it was all just ok considering we were there for over an hour and half waiting on our food for most of the time. and.. to add to this long list of screw ups, the waitress went to get a refill of torchado (sp?) and never came back to advise they had ran out. i had to ask after we finally received our food where my refill was (which was appx 20 min later), and she replied "oh, we ran out." poor service + non-flavorful food = not going back.

a good experience. i was incafekacao at 10am on a saturday morning. at that time it was not crowded, but when we left - a little after 11am - it was starting to fill up and the parking lot was already full.

the food was good. very good. i'd stop short of the raves that many reviewers have given it, but that's all a matter of taste. my daughter and i both had the huevos rancheros, and we would both order them again. just not the next time i'm in there. there are too many great sounding things on the menu for me to get into a rut until i've tried more of them. or all of them. i don't remember seeing anything on the menu that i wasn't interested in trying.

many of the negative reviews have focused on the service. my experience with the service was 100% positive. our server was there when he needed to be, and wasn't hovering around interrupting our conversation when he didn't need to be. a particular concern of mine is water. i drink a lot of water with my meals. my glass was never empty and he never bothered me asking if i wanted it filled. if it was getting close to emply, he simply filled it up - which is how i think such a simple matter should always be handled.

food was very good. service was excellent. we didn't have to wait through the crowds that many have mentioned. all in all, a great experience. i'll be back (i'm guessing it will be pretty often), and i'll recommend that others try it.

kacao 1st visit & more to come!. we were looking for a different brunch this weekend and came acrosscafekacao. the service was good from the front door to check out. we were offered a seat on a comfy couch until tables were cleared which only took a few minutes. the waitress was there with menus and to take our drink orders immediately. the food was delicious and there was plenty to take home. we will be dining here again!
