a dog is a mans best friend or so they say. i guess that this is because a dog is loyal, reliable, fun and always pleased to see you. the same could be said for this new blogs first review.
brown dog cafe, woolloongabba.
i've been a semi regular at brown dog for a while now and the experience from day one has always been a positive one. this morning once again i paid a visit with an old friend k, the friendship is old k certainly is not. brown dog cafe is located on near the stadium end of logan road in woolloongabba, parking is metered but plentiful and i am sure public transport is easy enough, not that i really know as the closest i get to public transport generally is an uber.
located on a small corner lot the cafe has a handful of tables inside and the same amount of pavement seating. inside the furniture is traditional mismatched older style and outside seems to be all made from re-purposed materials. my experience is that no matter when you decide to go, and i strongly believe that you should, they will be busy but never so busy that one has to wait a long time to get a table. counter service and payment in advance is the norm here as it seems to be in most cafes throughout brisbane, this is somewhat of a pet peeve of mine but i won't go on about that just now as i feel that is worth of an article in itself. k and i retrieved menus from the counter and immediately found a free table inside and took a seat to catch up and decide on our order.
scrambled egg on toast (toast served on the side) with a side of bacon.
as i mentioned the place is small with an open kitchen/servery in which 4 or 5staffdeftly dance around each other preparing food and drinks in a way that is familiar to anyone who has working in a commercial kitchen. busy like bees around a hive but never jolting or nudging against each other, if you haven't worked in the industry you may never have noticed this dance but next time you sit down to eat take notice, it can be quite inspiring to seestaffweave around without verbal communication or error.
the menu is small and simple, a pleasant change from the complex trends of adding dukkah to everything or having complicated but invariably poorly executed cooking techniques that it at times seem the chef picked up by watching masterchef the night before writing the menu. on the breakfast menu prices range from $2.50 for toast with your choice of condiment to $20 for the "big dog's breakfast" of haloumi, avocado, tomato, toast, scrambled eggs, ham and lemon. after a short chat we decided and i returned to the counter to order scrambled eggs on toast with a side of bacon ($15) for myself and a dog's breakfast (as above without the eggs and ham $13) for k who is a vegetablist. the coffees we choose to accompany this were a small soy latte ($4) for k and a large latte ($4.50) for myself. the young lady that served was friendly, polite and happy for me to explain once again that i hate soggy toast so please may i have my toast on the side. refreshingly there was no need to take a number as brown dog have had the sense to employstaffthat have the ability to find a customer without such a device, by i don't know looking probably. i returned to the table quickly followed by our coffees. as is my experience here the coffee was good, they serve espresso di manfredi classico blend which is a good all rounder, the milk well textured and at a temperature i like. no latte art but with creama hugging the sides of the cup as it should be.
dog's breakfast, like dog's dinner but for breakfast, get it?
soon after the food arrived via smiling server.
consistency is key with brown dog, mine was a good portion of fluffy scrambled eggs well seasoned with just crisped bacon and well toasted buttered sourdough toast. k's face was a delight as she tasted the haloumi which had that soft buttery texture that indicates its only seconds off the grill. the portions are generous enough to be filling without being so large that one feels like a nap is required to aid digestion. conversation slowed as we consumed our meals with both of us clearing savouring the simple but well executed flavours. plates were cleared quickly and without fuss, we adjourned outside for a smoke before returning for another coffee each and the wrapping up of our catch up conversation.
once again brown dog cafe left me feeling sated and relaxed with nothing to complain about, many cafes could learn that to be great you need first to be good. brown dog cafe is certainly that.
