blackfly - the restaurant

all i have to say is delicious!!! great food! great service!! my only suggestion would be to make the portions slightly larger. superb!!

blackfly operates an everything-from-scratch kitchen which means every sauce & dressing is prepared on site. these are incredibly flavorful & set blackfly apart from the many other restaurants in st. augustine. yes, their food is as flavorful & beautifully plated as collage! i will say i’ve preferred the steak dishes over the fish both times.

a "pay for the ambiance" kind of place. if you like paying loads of money for "ambiance" this is the place for you.

i ordered a strawberry infused salad (forget the name of it) and two sides -- the parmesan risotto which was phenomenal, and "red" mashed potatoes which i finished eating for breakfast this morning. also enjoyed the salad, what small amount there was of it for $8.

topped the meal off with "root beer" creme brulee which i looked forward to with great anticipation (root beer being my favorite soda, and creme brulee my favorite dessert) and was sadly disappointed....there was not even a smidgeon of root beer flavor and as creme brulees go, was quite bland. so that was a $6 not-do-over.

personally, i don't usually go for desserts that cost almost the same amount as a salad, but the description was just too tempting, as is normally the case with most desserts. unfortunately, this did not measure up.

paying $25 for a salad, sides, and dessert left a bad feeling in my mind -- and i was still a little hungry..however, fortunately i was with a very lively group of friends, so that helped it not be a big flop. definitely, too expensive a place to take the kids, but i suppose that for a romantic, pricey meal for two or three, it's doable. just steer away from the root beer creme brulee.

i still find this to be the best restaurant in st. augustine. consistently the finest with staff and owners who all work together for the ultimate dining experience.

excellent & consistent over 3 visits, 3 months. every order & service was perfect. coconut curry clam appetizer was large enuf 4 dinner entre & filet steak tender enuf to slice w/ fork. frank& allison behind the bar are charming & talented, the owners greet guests, & art is superb (& 4 sale!)

mediocre, overpriced, small portions. management unprofessional. will not return.

the food is excellent, i had the pan seared mahi mahi, we also enjoyed the scallops & the alfredo. all very good and original. portions just right. there was an unhappy couple a few tables away, i think the problem was them. they were in the wrong place, would have been more happy in the giggling gator.

great! can't wait to go back. my fiance and i had the pleasure of dining at the blackfly recently. the 'popcorn' rock shrimp were awesome, i especially loved the yogurt-cucumber sauce that came with it. my fiance had the pan fried flounder entree that came with a mushroom, sweet pea risotto cake, which was absolutely fantastic. our server was very friendly and professional and several staff members came to our table to help clear plates, etc. and the best for me, being a fan of a well made dirty martini, was the fact that they have a selection of stuffed olives. also they have a very extensive cocktail list and a very well stocked bar with a variety of fresh ingredients.

great food & atmosphere!. we loved our dinner at black fly. the restaurant is beautiful, elegant but casual. popcorn buffalo shrimp was a spicy starter, the mahi was fresh and well-prepared and the lobster mac n' cheese was chock full of lobster. best part is the menu is full of interesting items so we'll be back to try more.

blackfly the restaurant. i am afraid the blackfly is a tad overrated. portion sizes are on the small side, filet mignon at $26 is tiny and boring. scallops and calamari tasty but all things considered, st augustine has better restaurants to consider.
