only place we get takeout from in new berlin!. big tuna opened around the time we first moved to new berlin from chicago - holy crap were we excited when we discovered it was not justgoodbut great. we've been getting takeout there at least once a month - sometimes 2-3 times a month when busy - ever since. have never had a bad meal here - we usually get sushi but have also had a number of the hot dishes as well. from a sushi standpoint, it is a bit pricier than some of the similar "hole in the wall" places in big cities, but the quality is right on par. totally worth the $ to be able to get in new berlin. and knowing you're getting excellent quality. during the whole "tuna scrape" fiasco, that affected "imitation" japanese/chinese restaurants here, big tuna stood out as a place that doesn't cut corners or compromise quality.

don't forget to look for big tuna coupons in the local biz coupon circular - can't go wrong with $5-$20 off your order.

p.s. - if you are a japanese sushi purist that prioritizes authenticity above all else, this isn't your spot: this is a combo japanese/chinese restaraunt that, not shockingly, caters a bit more to midwestern/wi taste. (cheese in some rolls, fair amount of cooked options in addition to raw, etc. that said, not hard to avoid as plenty of options, or ask for rolls w cheese to be made w/out etc.) but if you are simply hungry for quality, tasty raw fish or some delicious japanese/chinese dishes from a place with friendly staff, this is your place.

prettygoodsushi. after i read the review where the person said the big tuna is really a chinese restaurant that serves sushi, i felt compelled to write a review, i mean the name of the place is big tuna, no where in the name should you get the idea that this is a chinese restaurant. every sushi restaurant serves dishes for non-sushi eaters. but i digress, the sushi here isgoodand fresh, the only knock i have is that the rolls are a little on the smaller side so don't be afraid to order the 3 roll maki or 3 rolls in general. i am not big on the saucy boutique sushi, and they do have sushi like that for those that prefer it (not that there's anything wrong with that), but they havegoodchoices forgoodstraight up sushi and rolls. their presentation is good, quality is good, if your in new berlin, its worth a try.

good sushi. i liked this place, not asgoodas the cities best, but its out in new berlin away from the main crowds and still manages to be fresh and tasty.

i had the black dragon roll and a roll special. the black dragon roll was good, not asgoodas many of reviewers implied it might be though (but it is hard to live up to that hype). the other food was also good. the ginger dressing is not on the list ofgoodstuff though, i know everyone does it differently but this was pretty bad. the miso soup was alright if a bit bland. for a miso soup it seemed to be somewhat flavorless, but it was stillgoodand i love miso soups so i will certainly have it again.

the service was top notch and even though we were not the only people in the place we were treated as such. that is unusual for the location, most places in this area tend to fall on the lousy side of the service wheel, often you have to find a more built up area to find better service, but this place is the exception to that rule.

the decor is fun as well, as it is all done up in a more traditional japanese restaurant sort of way. of course it is mostly an americanised view of that style and it still has its non traditional things, it does add a level of atmosphere that many other japanese places, and especially sushi joints, have eschewed as of late and replaced with clean modern designs. this gives this place an interesting and enjoyable ambiance. i liked it.

all in all i recommend this place to anyone in the new berlin area. its close, its locally owned and operated, its good, its not priced higher than other similar places nearby and in the end those things together make this a winning choice. that said they are competing with kyoto by southridge which for my money is the best sushi in the city (so far) and slightly better in most ways. but for anyone in the south western parts of greater milwaukee this is a compelling choice and one of my favorites. competition isgoodand i think this will make all of these places better, as there seems to be a market forgoodsushi in mke.

disappointed. we did not have any of the sushi or sashimi, so i can't comment on that at all.

the decor was great, the service was fantastic, and the presentation was excellent.

however, we were disappointed because this really is a chinese restaurant that serves sushi, not a real japanese restaurant. the food does not come close to being anything authentically japanese, so it was a let down for us.

the food did not taste bad, but if you are looking forgoodjapanese food (i'll repeat here that i did not try the sushi or sashimi), look elsewhere.

the hibachi chicken was oily and was swimming in sauce, similar to what i'd expect from a chicken plate from a chinese kiosk at a food court.

the tempura was greasy and not at all what we expected. it probably shouldn't even be called tempura. the very nice waitress told us it was their original recipe for tempura. so, don't expect the light, flavorful tempura from nicer japanese restaurants.

also, the greasy tempura was served with a very oily side dish of fried rice! (it should be white rice) not something that would happen at a real japanese restaurant.

because of these issues, we thought it was overpriced. but, if you like their take on asian food, it might be worth your time. i can honestly say it was a nice place. it just wasn't for us.

love big tuna. like the others before me here, i had my doubts about what a small market new berlin could offer. well, i was very pleased with what i found. after eating at several sushi restaurants around the area and beyond, i was very pleased with the offerings and prices from big tuna. friendly staff and great food make this a must stop! working in the city makes finding somethinggoodand healthy to eat hard to find some days. no longer will i have to eat wal mart sushi! will be taking the entire family to support this new business!!

excellent all around!!!. wow! this restaurant was quite surprising.

i thought it was just a little hole in the wall sushi place but it is much more than that! it is decorated implacably and very comfortable. the staff is amazingly helpful and efficient and best of all, the food is fabulous!!!! and the presentation is amazing as well. (try the dragon roll, it's so pretty you want to take a picture of it, and it tastesgoodtoo!)

plus, everyone gets yummy soup to start with and super sweet, tasty oranges for dessert.

if you like sushi or hibachi, you have to try out this place!

big tuna is wow food.. my wife and myself waited patiently for big tuna to open. we have eaten sushi all over the country and couldn't wait for there to be one in our own backyard! we worried about it's quality seeing that it's in sort of a small market like new berlin, however our worries were soon gone once we got to try it.

we have since been in a couple times in the past week. we keep trying different dishes and while some were good, others were over the top fantastic. my worries about fish quality were first to be tested. i ordered some tuna and salmon sashimi immediately. while the salmon was verygoodand very fresh i was almost floored when i had the tuna. fresh fresh fresh and oh so tasty. big tuna is definitely doing tuna big time!

so we were on to the rolls. we have tried a few and while there is a lot of variety i did notice that they seem to be going for a more american friendly menu. which i think will work for new berlin. our favorites so far are the dynamite, hummer, and crazy tuna rolls.

they also offer hibachi which our daughter tried (so did mom and dad), to which i must say was very good.

the service here has been fantastic and the decor is also very nice. we look forward to eating here multiple times a week and not having to spend a ton of money to do so! well done big tuna!!
