great. big jims gives you portions that are unmatched and food that is delicious at a good price. from italian specialties to sandwiches an anaconda couldn't stretch to fit in, this place is excellent. it is however a dive

italian???. i went for lunch and ordered the eggplant parmesan after reading how good the italian food was. without doubt the worst marinara sauce i have ever eaten. lacked the hint of any spice or flavor--seemed as if someone opened a can of bland tomato sauce and mixed it with the pasta and dumped it over the eggplant.

makes one understand how guy f. had his food trashed at his new restaurants.

immobilized by food. if you are in search of a trendy, fine dining restaurant or you are a swimsuit model big jims may not be for you. if you like to eat good italian food and sandwiches where portion control is thrown out the window big jims is your place.

i am sure in the future some politician will attempt to control these massive portions. in the meantime, i will indulge on this fine food and order italian dishes like the eggplant parmesian which would feed a mid-sized village.

best unknown place in town. i tried this place after seeing it on triple d. i have been a lifelong pittsburgher and never knew this place existed. i loved guy fietti (sp?) intro, "everyone in pittsburgh knows the run" and i'm...uh where? the place and neighborhood can be offputting, but wow, what food! had their two-bill sandwich, which is possibly the best thing i ever ate. i will definitely come back. its like a secret find.

i love big jim's. we live in an era of health food, excercise regimes, hot yoga, organic food, but sometimes it's nice to just throw on a pair of sweatpants and eat food that'd make a 2 ton water buffalo instantaneously contract diabetes. the place to do this is big jim's, where the food is big, the people are bigger, and no one goes home hungry. if you've never experienced it, you're life is painfully incomplete.

check your fancy at the door, big jim's on the run is the epitome of a casual blue collar every day pittsburgher's watering hole. very relaxed atmosphere, very friendly people, and very easy on the wallet, i was extremely content to start my saturday afternoon with a six dollar "gourmet burger."

wonderful. went to lunch there today and it was awesome. food portion size was huge! i had the steak salad and it was terrific. my co-workers had the meatball hoagies and said they were wonderful. could not beat the price.

the portions seem to tailored to those weighing more than 400 pounds and with daily calorie requirements in excess of 10,000. the prices are extraordinarily reasonable. given the portion sizes, the $2 plate-splitting fee seems a little out of place. if you like leftovers (as i do), order a full dinner. if you don't like leftovers and you can't eat like kobayashi, share.

pleasantly surprised. i never thought this was a restaurant. i had passed by it a handful of times and always just assumed that it was just a bar and the type of bar you go to when you're looking for trouble.

nope!

saw it on food network and i knew that i had to scope out this dive joint. awesome! went with my girlfriend. she had the eggplant parm, i had the wedding soup and the open-faced turkey sandwich. the sheer size was impressive, the taste, even better. if you haven't tried it and are looking for great tasting italian food at a reasonable price, go to big jim's!

this place was great! a hidden gem in oakland. after seeing it on the food network we decided we had to try it. it had an nice and humble atmosphere.. some interesting vintage pieces. the atmosphere isn't what makes the place, though. like it should be, its the food. i highly recommend the veal sandwich and wedding soup! homemade and delicious.
