beas of bloomsbury is a bit of an institution when it comes to all things cake and taking afternoon tea in one of their outlets has been on my to do list for a while! the interiors are small and yet quirky, it’s only a tiny little slip of a venue – corridor shaped, with one side of floor to ceiling glass next to one new change shopping centre.

you order up your selection from the counter downstairs and upstairs there is a similar sized space, just wide enough to hold a length of banquette-style seating, covered in bright and warm velvety colours. teapots hang from the ceiling and there is some exposed brick and metal work to keep it looking too twee.

bea’s attracts a varied crowd, there are the ladies of leisure having the traditional afternoon tea (like us) but also people on business having meetings with a cake and a coffee and shoppers and tourists alike sampling something sweet to give them a jolt of energy. we join the afternoon tea brigade and sit down in a corner of the room upstairs, all the better to see the whole room and settle in. first up, drinks.

the tea menu was short and sweet; it doesn’t try to bamboozle you with options, but still offers up a decent selection. we opt for an earl grey and a fruity number of blackcurrant and hibiscus. they come in solid china teapots and mugs, which are deceptively large and need no topping up, although it does make for a slightly stronger brew than the delicate flavor of an earl grey really calls for.

the afternoon tea begins with a cake stand filled to the brim with sandwiches, sconesand a mouthwatering cake and dessert selection. where to begin? as is traditional, we start with the sandwiches – these are not the delicate crustless variety, but flavoursome focaccia with a range of innovative flavours; cream cheese & walnut, parma ham and onion jam with mozzarella. the cream cheese and walnut wins for its simplicity and when paired with the slightly salty focaccia and rosemary bread is a taste sensation.

one note of warning though, these delectable sandwiches are quite considerably more filling than their delicate thin bread counterparts and we find ourselves filling up far too soon and yet there is a whole platter full of delicious food to savour.

thesconesare good and when served with lashings of cream and raspberry jam, just as toothsome as any traditional english fare ofsconeswith tea. but the cakes are where it’s truly at. we opt to share half of each of the cupcakes – chocolate topped with raspberry cream and the other chocolate base again topped with pistachio cream. a failing of the cupcake trend of the moment is a tendency towards excessive icing but bea’s has balanced the icing/ cupcake ratio perfectly. furthermore, the icing tastes exactly of the fruit it represents and not just a sugary concoction on top. we’re torn between the two flavours; so distinct and perfect as they are in their own rights, we are forced to call it a tie.

the additional sweet things on top are getting more and more challenging to eat. this is an afternoon tea designed for the very hungry and with meringues, blondies, brownies and marshmallow yet to go, we are soon defeated. the charming staff offers to pack them up though and offer up little boxes to take our sweet treats home, which is a lovely touch and one more high tea establishments should offer.

this place was very disappointing. i took my boyfriend here for an afternoon tea and cake for his birthday last sunday and we got a seat on the floor upstairs. the waiter seemed to be unsure of himself and kept tripping over his words as he described what our 3 tier cake/sandwich selection consisted of. we would've accepted that if they'd remembered to bring cream and jam to go with oursconesand not been given a seat with the view of a building which wasn't what we were promised. they started playing music after about 30 minutes of us being there but then switched it off. i wouldn't recommend this place as it is disorganized. i must add, however, that the cake and sandwiches were delicious but that doesn't really make us want to return to this place.

this place is pretty organised and the reservation process is pretty solid. they have an option for full afternoon tea at 19 pounds per person to enjoy a substantial selection of teas, sweets and salty snacks which you might find hard to completely finish!
i definitely recommend trying thesconeshere which are just out of this world! i had an awesome experience over all, will be back for more!

i had a very disappointing experience at this place. the staff here is inefficient and service is a major lag here. the staff seems to be in a rush all the time. we ordered a few brownies, cakes, sconesand sandwiches. except the brownies, everything else was just about average, rather below average. i would never return to this place again and would definitely not recommend it.

i had a really good experience at this place, in fact i was delighted by my afternoon tea here. the interiors are small but sweet the place has a tendency to get crowded, so it is advised to get book in advance. the little detail of free sweets for take away near the entrance is a nice touch.
talking about the food, the menu had a wide variety of delicious tasting items and my order of sandwiches andsconeswere just amazing. but in general , the taste was not that memorable. but i know i will come back for more.

i used to be a regular at this place back when i was studying in london. i'd go there very often for afternoon tea. the food is very good there and reasonably priced, one never left hungry. the mood of this place however is very casual, so if you're looking for proper london tea, don't go there .there is quite some variety in food, not the usual finger sandwiches, they have the best baguettes without mayonnaise. they also have the most amazingsconesand each person gets a cupcake too.

before you plan your outing to this place remember to get a reservation or else you will have to face the 'surly' expressions of the staff. you are not a welcome guest in case you do not reserve your desk in advance. the waiting time makes your stomach ache and frankly you can get bettersconesand tea at a variety of other places. then why should you visit a place where people do not even greet you with a smile?

kim and i was dying to have some afternoon tea, we suppose to go to the ritz but both on a tight budget. i suggested bea’s of bloomsbury, they opened their second branch one change, st pauls. i booked a table for 2 at 1pm on a sunday overlooking the city surroundings.

extract from their website on their afternoon tea offering

full afternoon tea for £15.00 per person, which includes savoury baguettes, a proper scones, clotted cream and jam, one of our signature cupcakes, a mini valrhona brownie, a mini belgian blondie, and a mini meringue and of course a pot of jing tea.

the cakes are absolutely d e l i c o u s, the lemon marshmallow melts into your mouth with that lemon zest taste. the cupcakes are the best i’ve tried so far, moist, airy and fluffy and the butter cream flavoured without too much butter. thesconeswasn’t too heavy and went well with the clotted cream and jam. love this place.

beas of bloomsbury is as lovely an eatery as it sounds. with delectable cupcakes and brilliant tea, this is one of our favourite bakeries in london. even their crockery is cute!

they also have lunch options but we usually stop by for cakes. i can easily recommend passion fruit cupcake, brownies, banana bread and moist carrot cake. absolutely brilliant.

they also make amazingscones- very flavourful and very well made (soft inside and crumbly outside) do try the cheese scones. delicious from the word go.

best afternoon tea in london. while i was studying in london, i would go to bea's at least once a week for afternoon tea. it had the best food at the best price, and i never left hungry. the atmosphere is much more casual than some of the other tea places, so if you are looking for the classic tea experience, this might not be the best place to go. however, the food is the best, and the price is right. instead of the typical finger sandwiches, bea's provide small baguettes that are fab and don't contain mayonnaise. they have the bestsconesin london (clotted cream isn't even necessary). each person gets a cupcake as well as other little delicious sweets. i recommend requesting the red velvet cupcake.
