modern, stylish wine bar and restaurant in washington heights. it’s flexible enough that it would be a good business entertaining or for romantic dinners (eg date night). my impression is it is not a great place to bring children.

highlights: extensive spirits selection especially whiskies, great friendly chatty bar staff if you sit at the bar, good cocktails, large elevated booths for group eating, large wine selection.

went there on a tuesday after a couple of drinks around houston. the place was packed, it was restaurant month or week, they have a 45$ 3 course special. my friend took that and i got the 20oz 55-day dry-aged bone-in ribeye, with pork loin, onion rings, mac n cheese and soufflé with on other item, finished it with a cheese cake and bread pudding. everything was amazing, my steak was the highlight of the night. staff are amazing, food is very good, also got a glass of wine and all for 167$.definitely recommended and can't wait to go back one day.

hygiene problem. hair on the plate with a $50 steak. ruined meal and ruined evening. it was a friend's 60th birthday celebration and it was just disgusting. hard to recover from something like that when you're trying to be a quality steak house.

really bad. not just because this is a high end place, but really bad for a medium or low end place. the lamb was over cooked and tasteless, the vegetables were undercooked or swimming in oil, and the service was abysmal; after waiting 10 minutes for waiter to stop by i had to get up and walk over to the wait station and get menus for the table myself. waiters were flustered and did not know what food was for what table, let alone what setting, and they were walking by wiping sweat off their foreheads with their hands and then directly passing people their food. i was truly incredulous and it became a running joke throughout the meal, which is the only thing that saved the evening.

b&b butchers is located on washington ave., just a few minutes from downtown and a few blocks off i-10. you can't miss the building that shouts out "meat me" to passers-by. it reminds me of what the entrance to a meat-themed amusement park would look like. what a wonderful concept by benjamin berg, who turned this historic building into what i would call a "grown man's disneyland!"

first stop - the dining area on the first floor. the beautiful restoration job in this almost century-old building is remarkable - the cosmetics are a very enjoyable part of the experience and set the tone for the cuisine. the bar area is a perfect place to have a drink while waiting to be seated. a classy wine rack separates the bar area from the formal dining room.

then, once we got upstairs, it literally took my breath away! i am used to seeing beautiful views of the pacific, but the houstonian/texan in me has to admit this view of my favorite city skyline is worth the price of admission to this culinary theme park! you get a beautiful view of downtown, as you can see in the photography. i had to put my hand over my heart. it is good to be in texas!

we started off with jumbo lump crab cakes on a whole grain mustard cream sauce. the extremely large chunks of crab were lightly breaded to perfection and provided a wonderful texture to go along with the sweet taste of the crab. the whole grain mustard was what really put this app over the top, and it goes on my must-try list!

next up was the most recommended item on the list - besides the steaks, of course. chef tommy's bacon roquefort with truffle infused honey / pork belly. if you like pork belly, you will love this appetizer! sweet and savory with just the right bite from the roquefort. i read where a critic claimed it was too fatty. well, it's from the belly of a pig... what do you expect?

another amazing appetizer we enjoyed (notice a pattern?), was the carpet-bagger on the half shell - a beautifully-designed nugget of love straight from the kitchen here at b&b butchers. the fried oyster is strategically perched on top of bacon, a filet tip, blue cheese and their house-made hot sauce. does that sound like something you would be interested in? if you enjoyed reading that, just think about what it tastes like. short answer... good!

we decided to run the gamut and try a bit of everything, starting with a bone-in chopped steak with sautéed organic mushrooms & madeira. seriously, bone-in - just check the photography and see for yourself. an awesome entrée and beautifully presented.

my favorite cut of steak is rib-eye and the bone-in dry-aged rib-eye was just what the doctor ordered. this 22-oz. steak was a perfectly-prepared medium-rare with a flavor as good as any steak i have ever enjoyed. that is a long list of wonderful steaks, i assure you. although this is my go-to steak, i have heard good things about them all, so pick the cut you like most. by the way, you can pick them up to serve at home at the butcher shop downstairs - how cool is that?

for my side, i decided to go with the b&b mac & cheese - which is not your everyday mac & cheese. this side has truffles! it kind of speaks for itself... ya know?

another favorite of mine here is the 10-oz filet mignon... carpet-bagger style! this is the first time i have had it this way and would definitely order it again and again. unique flavors combine to please the palate: a delightful combo of bacon, filet mignon, fried oyster and blue cheese drizzled with a house-made hot sauce. amazing... simply amazing.

and to change it up even more, we went for the wasabi crusted tuna on the next round. this beautiful coriander-crusted tuna sat neatly around the edge of the plate next to a wakame & shiitake salad with ponzu and miso vinaigrette. this piece of art was one of the most beautiful photographs i took on this adventure. everything about this dish was specifically planned and served its purpose - not only appealing to the eye, but a flavor your taste buds won't soon forget.

the chocolate cake is just as silky-smooth and creamy as it looks. so rich and chocolaty, with the berries providing that juicy sweetness only a berry can. this was my favorite dessert of the three - and that is saying something!

the new york cheesecake is so fitting after eating such a well-crafted meal. and, this cheesecake is one you want to try. i recommend you share a couple of desserts with the table so you can taste at least a couple. ya know?

nowadays, i get really excited about an evening out with friends, experimenting with new-found tastes, enjoying craft beer and cocktails. even more, i enjoy sharing what i find out with others. to sum it all up in one sentence " b&b butchers is an experience you want to have in houston." and you can quote me on that. enjoy!

while my filet with truffle butter was good, it didn't blow me away. pappas does a better job any day. (hey that rhymed!) i liked the ambiance, our server dante was great, and i appreciate the ample parking, but the food was just so-so which is disappointing considering how much we paid for everything. dessert was nothin special. an open faced ice cream sandwich... i expected something a little more decadent than just a dry cookie topped with a scoop of ice cream. oh and my boyfriend had to spit the beef sushi roll out... yikes!

houston has had its share of new steakhouse openings this year but b & b butchers is the one that is transforming the way we think about restaurants where meat is king. when we first visited the heights steakhouse, our minds immediately drifted to thoughts of peter lugers steakhouse in brooklyn (new york). without spending too much time on the comparison, well just say they are holding their own against one of the nation's best.

best steakhouse in houston hands down!  the carpet bagger oysters are amazing and probably one of the best things on the menu.  it's a great way to sample the seafood, steak and bacon all wrapped up in one delightful little package!  the cocktails were refreshing and the list extensive.  had the dry-aged porterhouse for two with creamed spinach and truffle mac & cheese.  the steak was the best i've ever had the creamed spinach was equally delicious.  could've passed on the mac and cheese - it was crunch as the dish was thin and a little heavy on the truffle.  will definitely be going back!

i took a few customers here for lunch. the main dish was very delicious. however, the french fries were definitely frozen bag fries that tasted a bit fishy. why go through all the effort of making a high end restaurant with delicious apps & main courses, then ruin them with frozen french fries? i'd go back, but ask for a different side with my meal.

b&b butchers and restaurant located in houston’s historic 6th ward at the east end of washington avenue brings a little bit of new york city to houston’s culinary scene. last night, i attended a tasting dinner as part of the houston food bloggers collective that was sponsored by restauranteur benjamin berg and his team. this dining experience allowed hfbc members to appreciate various aspects of berg’s new york inspired restaurant.

berg transformed the historic dittman bakery at 1814 washington into a truly unique space combining the elements of a nyc steakhouse, a neighborhood butcher shop, a deli and a downtown skyline rooftop bar.  when i first saw b&b butchers and restaurant from the exterior, i immediately thought of nyc's meat packing district. the interior is stunning featuring exposed brick walls, lofty ceilings, wooden beams, dark wood with silver accents, and custom lighting.

berg’s experience in restaurant management, specializing in upscale steakhouses, bleeds throughout every aspect of execution and presentation. he understands the importance of the dining experience and knows how to meet clients' expectations. the staff is knowledgeable and attentive, the ambience is relaxing and stylish, and the food is plated beautifully and the special attention to ingredients used for each dish is what makes b&b butchers and restaurant truly memorable.

try the b&b steak house salad, crispy calamari & peppers, slice filet, roasted salmon, roasted chicken with lemon pepper sauce, the b&b mac & cheese, the any of the desserts. the cheesecake was so fluffy with a kiss of vanilla and the open face ice cream sandwich had a chocolate chip cookie that left us craving more.

go taste and see for yourself!

when the houston food blogger collective made it known this was their target destination for their next get-together and tasting dinner, i jumped at the chance to participate and be able to experience b&b butchers & restaurant for the first time. i'm already looking forward to my next visit. starting with the carpet bagger oyster appetizer, fried calamari and peppers, to the b&b "steak" house salad, b&b truffled mac & cheese, a delicious chicken-fried prime pork chop, a roasted scottish salmon, and a simple but elegant sliced beef filet, all offerings were excellent. they closed with a memorable dessert trio of new york cheesecake, an open-faced ice cream sandwich, and a carrot cake. all this was coupled with an attentive service staff that expertly wedged dish after dish in between some 60-odd foodies, competing directly with our need to get pictures of everything! i also can't wait to get back and spend some more time on their rooftop deck for a twilight drink or two, with beautiful views of downtown.

highly recommend b&b for anyone looking for a new destination in the washington avenue corridor that does just about everything exceptionally well.
