barcottois ethan stowell’s newest venture.  on capitol hill and adjacent to anchovies and olives, i’m sure it will soon have a strong following like all of ethan’s other locations.  and for good reason.  a friend and i visited for a recent happy hour and enjoyed a trio of tasty dishes. barcottois technically a salumeria, but i was pleasantly surprised to see several things on the menu that would keep my non-meat-eating friends happy.  in fact during this visit we tried two of the non-meat happy hour menu items: corona bean and cauliflower salad with currants and rosemary; and roasted fennel, bottarga (cured fish roe) and preserved lemon.  the beans and cauliflower were outstanding!  i’m motivated to try making this at home because it was so delicious.  the fennel was also good, but i didn’t think it was quite as inspired. to top off our eating experience we finished with a salsiccia pizza (house made fennel sausage, rapini, fior di latte, tomato).   it has a perfect thin, crispy cr

bar cotto was the second ethan stowell restaurant we tried in seattle. it's billed as a "parma-style salumeria and cocktail bar with pizza."  i wasn't sure how sp would feel about trying this place. on the one hand, he really enjoys those kinds of meats. on the other hand, pizza. his love of the meats won.

one of the best pizza's in town. my partner and i were lucky enough to get a 8:00 reservation last night at barcottoon capital hill. this was our first time there and we were impressed! it is a small and quaint little place. the service was top notch. we arrived a little early and were seated immediately. we shared a bottle of a local wine from scarborough winery - 2011 cabernet sauvignon "the main event" which was very nice. started with few items from the verdura (small plates): corona bean salad (cauliflower, currants, rosemary) & brussel sprouts (breadcrumbs and salsa verde)...both were amazing. we usually order vegetarian pizza but when we saw that the porchetta was done in house we had to go with the porchetta pizza (housemade porchetta, chili, arugula pesto, fior di latte)...and so glad we did! it was one of the best pizza's i have had outside of what you get in italy. as full as we were we could not pass up some desert when we saw the chocolate/mint cookie ice cream sandwich with chocolate oil dipping sauce! it was the finish to an impressive italian style pizza dinner. we will be back!!!!
