it's all about the atmosphere. okay, the food here isn't great, butal'sis a birmingham staple anyway. why? it's because at any given time, day or night, the place is packed with the perfect cross-section of birmingham residents: uab students, on-duty cops, off-duty doctors and nurses, one or two sketchy characters to liven it up a bit, and everyone inbetween.

grab a weld magazine from the rack in the front, get in line, and expect to wait to place your order. i usually get the gyro pronto (pita wrap with freshly sliced gyro, fried egg, and melty "cheese") or a mahi-mahi sandwich (giant portion of mahi served hot on a sesame seed bun with lettuce, tomato, and special sauce). some people swear by the chicken fingers, but i think that's just out of nostalgia... they're the same flat, dry, frozen chicken tenders you'll find in any high school cafeteria. the other crowd favorite, the loaded bakers, are well worth every penny. share one with a friend and you'll both have to wear your fat pants for the next week and a half.

if you sit inside, you'll get a lovely view of a long line of rear ends at eye level who are all waiting to place their order, and if you sit outside, you'll share your meal with the pigeons, but it's all part of the charm. service is usually quick and friendly, and you really can't beat the prices for the amount of food you get. visitors to birmingham might be a little confused as to whyal'srating is so high, but they can go somewhere else...al'sis a landmark venue, and no one can call themselves a local unless they've eaten here after midnight!

legend. a meeting place, a place to chill after a show or skateboarding, a place to go after the bars, or on a weekend afternoon.al'sis unlike any other place, as it has been all the aforementioned things to me over years. al himself is a really nice guy. what other 24 hour place has this consistency & local flavor? filling & delicious! if the grease smell, pigeons, late night lines or the casual nature of it bother you, good riddance to ya i say.

i have eaten atal'smediterranean since i was a student at uab more than 10 years ago. it has always been a good place to eat and very poplar. they are open 24 hours and the food is just plain old good. the place lacks refinement and is sometimes a little skeezy but that's only because of the volume of business they do there it's that good. i've always enjoyed the gyro and their chicken fingers and fries. for fellafel stuff i prefer purple onion, that's just me.

the worst. we went toal'sthe other night, for the first time in a couple of years. i always enjoyed the mediocre late night food, so believe me, i wasn't expecting a 5 star meal. however, the horror show that i received was truly astonishing.
i ordered my old fave, the falafel plate. when it came out, the falafel was so dried and burnt, it resembled charcoal brickets more than any edible food i have ever seen. were they edible? no, they were not. i seriously couldn't eat them. i walked the plate up to the counter and asked if i could get more. the guy at the counter refused. he kept insisting that they were fine, and that's how they are supposed to be. he said i could order and pay for something else. of course, i had no interest in that. i told him, all i want are falafel patties that aren't burnt to a crisp. he again refused, shrugged and then proceeded to ignore me. never again.

why you should choose al's. whyal'sinstead of the purple onion?
1. it is much cleaner than the purple onion. you will often see employees cleaning.
2. the staff is accommodating and lacking in rudeness. i once ordered something at the purple onion and asked for it to come without peppers. the guy taking my order said i could just pick it off. wtf?
3. the food just tastes better.

my favorite menu items are the greek salad, hummus with pita, and chicken fingers.

what's taters, eh?. ah, al's. the 24 hour college hot spot, the place for food after drinking or to have a bite after a concert, to grab lunch between running around. the large patio, the lunch counter ordering, the bakers.

yep, we all know al's. you might be surprised that it is so successful being so close to the established purple onion. but sure enough, lunch and late night has a line out the door. (yes, be prepared for a line during peek hours - call ahead). butal'shas been around for quite some time. what makes it different than purple onion since it serves the same stuff? well, the bakers. we're talking huge, honking taters covered in… whatever. vegetarians can top it with onions and cheese and broccoli, while meat eaters can smother it in whatever's behind the counter. and i usually can get two meals off one of them. i'm a cheese and bbq sauce person, no meat. mmmm. a regular baker with cheese, sour cream, and butter, bbq sauce and a drink will run about $7. remember - two meals. i often see couples splitting them.

plus, there's the personal preferences. the fries are different (slim cut, not crinkle), but that's not my thing. there's fish and gyros and chicken, as well as the american favorites of burgers and chicken fingers. vegetarians - i do not like their veggie burger here. its inconsistent and has a really odd texture, often too much wheat germ. i think they make their own sometimes, but they've also served the store bought to. so, a little confused there. no turkey burger though. my last visit, on a down note, they cooked the sour cream on my baker. it turned a little, but this is the first time they've ever done that.

so, the prices are alright, the food is standard, the hours are right. it's a solid spot where nearly everyone in your part will find something they like. its not gourmet or fresh local produce. it's a baker at 2am, a gyro at lunch, or a burger after work. college kids and business professionals, doctors and laborers all visit the al's. repeatedly.

side notes: most of the seating is outside. there are a few tables covered outside too, but this is a fair weather place. inside is 4-6 booths, but any 'fluffy' sized people won't be comfortable inside at all. it is wheel chair accessible, though inside can be a little cramped in a crowd. vegans beware - not sure how much butter goes into all of these items. asking the staff may be a gamble as they may not know or may not understand what you are asking. big salads are available though. parking issues are there, but usually there's someplace to park within a block. parking is on the street or out back, and across the street during late night hours.

always good.. it's hard not to like something, if not everything about al's. a) it's always open. b) there is something on the menu you are bound to like, be it simple like a burger or the baker (potato as big as your head stuffed with things) or something mediterranian and more exotic! c) it's always delicious! can't go wrong withal's- bottom line.

it's great because it's the only thing open. due to lack of other options,al'sis popular. the gyro is fine. the fries are fries. you'll eat anything drunk. so instead of burning your house down trying to cook a frozen pizza, come here and do some people watching.

bbq chicken baker. this monstrous thing is perfect for a late night carb load. get an extra bbq and hold the cheese and it makes it perfect. this is not something you get to lose weight, but hell, the reason you go toal'sis a more fattening than the this potato paradise could ever be. there are other good items but this is perfect when you think you can't eat enough.

late-night staple -.al's- friggin' love it - mostly for the atmosphere, but the food's pretty good too. my friends and i usually drop on the place during the warm months to sit outside and people-watch, shoot the shiz, grab a bite, and all-around chill. it's located in southside so the clientele is generally uab students and employees, but others from all over the city visit as well. as a result, you kinda get a college hangout-kinda feel to the joint, which is pretty cool for those of us moving well past the college years. lol the cuisine is mediterranean/american, so you can do gyros, falafel, burgers, potato bakers, chicken fingers, etc. - essentially something for everyone. and the later the better - 24/7 operation, and there's no such thing as too late. the staff is friendly, and despite some of the people looking kinda sketchy sometimes,al'sis pretty safe, with the occasional policeman hanging around sometimes for a meal during shift or just hanging to talk with the workers.

long story less long -al'sis a great late night spot for some good grub that's not deep-fried, or only suitable after 1am (i'm looking at you, krystal's). trust a night owl. see ya out there! ;)
