al markaz is a wonderful paki/indian spot. pretty cheap as well. get the lunch combo! thenaanwas probably the freshest i have ever had as well as the vegetable samosa. they literally had just come out of the oven. when we got the bill we checked it over because it looked too cheap. i fed myself and my brother who is a personal trainer for 20.

probably one of the most popular stops for asian food per visitors. ordered the haleem which didn't have any flavor and the texture felt disoriented. thenaanwas fresh n fluffy. kheer was sour basically it went bad. this was a disappointing experience.

dares you to deny the flavor. there is no denying this place is ugly. in fact, it is the most disheveled location i have ever voted up. but just as was previously commented, you will come for the flavor, and you will come back.

menu is biased a little more towards the pakistani, but you will find huge families of patrons on both sides of the himalayas loving the food here (no kidding...our party of 5 were the only caucasians in an 80% packed house, and there is a lot of seating). some of the staff do not speak english that clearly, but they are all very friendly, polite and patient.

not to distract from the food, though--it is no-nonsense, heavy, rich, generously-spiced subcontinental bliss. started with a deeply-colored mango lassi that had to have had at least half a mango gracing it.naanand chutney were world-class, and i would make a meal out of that alone. palak paneer was so, so rich, but it is the rich that will make your resistances melt...so do not come on a diet. between the sauce and the cheese itself was probably an entire quart of whole milk. mercifully, they do not oversize their portions, else i might have exploded.

sampled the other sauces, and they delivered a balanced spice profile and a weight appropriate to their respective dishes. this can traditionally mean a heck of a lot of ghee, so use them sparingly. oh, and one last note--basmati rice (prepared splendidly with a dashing of cumin/fennel) does not come with the meal like thenaandoes, so be sure to ask for it. one order is plenty to share among 2-3 people.

aside--the grocery is stocked with wonderful imported culinary curios, and their prices are more than fair. do not forget to check it out while you are there.
