most authentic sushi experience in the triad. if you are looking for the real deal, authentic sushi experience, then look no further. akashi is the place to go for great, reasonably priced sushi and japanese cuisine. and no, i don't mean hibachi cooking. you will find great dishes like katsu don, udon, and many others, all made with love and care. the sushi chef is super friendly and always gives us a litle extra sushi on the house since we are longtime customers. he goes out of his way to make you feel at home. also of note, i love the japanese kitsch that serves as the restaurant decor (shin chan comics, etc). you will not be dissapointed with akashi.

terrific japanese. we have been eating at akashi since 2004, when my wife started working in greensboro. the food has always been excellent, the chef very creative and the service above par. never been disappointed. always look forward to a trip back.

don't bother.. we went to akashi based on good reviews and i am not sure how they got them. the waitstaff were overworked even though there were only a few customers and the food was bad. we tried several sushi rolls and all the fish seemed old. we ordered a different dish and waited for twenty minutes. the waitress then told us it would be another twenty minutes so we tried to cancel the order but were told that they were already making it. thirty minutes later, we finally got it. i will not be going here again.

amazing find!. amazing little place! :) my husband and i stopped in on a thursday night for dinner around 6:30p. the food was delicious! the people who own the place are this sweet couple, the man is also the sushi chef and he does an incredible job! we ordered hibatchi plates and the portions were so big that both of us ate leftovers the next day for lunch. the food was so affordable, and you get so much! each plate comes with a side of miso soup and a salad. the food was fresh, and the service was great. this is such a great find, we plan to go back frequently!

mediocre - place is a joke. i am a self-confessed sushi addict. i discovered sushi shortly after college, and it has quickly become a bad and expensive habit. i am also a "sushi purist". i like my sushi very authentic. i look down on people who eat deep fried/cream-cheesed/sauced up/chickened/beefed up sushi rolls. yes technically sushi is the rice, therefore you could slap whatever you want on the inside of a rice roll, but i believe sushi should be eaten only with fish/other seafood. i was in the piedmont triad area on business last week and as usual had to satisfy my sushi habit. granted, i knew i was in the south and should have suspected i was getting myself into a situation not quite ideal (there i go... stereotyping... more to come on this). but no level of expectation management prepared me for the shock i was about to experience at akashi. i will break it down into three categories - good, bad and ugly.

the good -
everyone was nice. i pulled up to the parking lot and these japanese men and women were getting into their cars (presumably just dined here) and they all waved and said hi - i thought that was really nice. the chef (presumably the owner) and his wife (or so i assumed) were also very nice, almost to the point of becoming overbearing.

the bad -
it was freezing in there. i live in the midwest, so freezing is the new norm, but i thought being the south everyone liked it warmer (stereotyping again) blah blah. i was also cheerfully offered a fork when i placed my offer. its always been my experience that you're never offered a fork unless you ask for it or if its rolled up with your dinner napkin. i wonder why she thought i needed a fork.

the ugly -
i scanned through the menu trying to order a fish appetizer and proceeded to ask the waitress what a particular item on the menu was (and here's where it all went downhill). she said "oh that? you dont want it, only the asians eat that stuff. its weird - its a whole fish cooked with all the bones in it... blah blah blah." i was livid. yeah i'm not asian, but that doesnt mean i dont have the right to know what a dish is or that i wont be interested in it. so i thought "ok, if i make her understand that i am comfortable with eating a bony fish, she'd tell me what it was", so i asked "well, what exactly is it, i might be interested". she just repeated dismissingly that its not a normal dish and she recommended i go with a different item. i was too hungry to press the issue further so i did. i ordered a rainbow roll and a california roll, because i figured these were the two hardest to mess up. luckily, the food came out pretty quickly, however the both rolls were missing one key ingredient - avocado. in all the years i've been eating sushi, i have never had a rainbow or cali roll that did not have avocado. instead avocado had been replaced with carrots in the california, and another fish in the rainbow. also the slices were very different sizes - sure i wasnt expecting perfect cuts, but some were about half the size of the other. i expect some sort of pride in the workmanship but clearly this was not the case. the rice tasted a little stale - must have been near the bottom of the cooker or something

to top it all off, they didnt accept american express so i had to charge my meal to my personal card versus a business expense card. this last bit wasnt even a big deal, except it just happened to be the icing atop a very crappy cake.

needless to say, i will never go back here, neither will i recommend it to anyone, and certainly never call it an authentic sushi place.

we ate sushi and both had an udon bowl each. so much food and delicious to boot. we lived in japan for 3 years and their food brought is right back to japan. the waitress was very knowlagble about everything on the menu and helpful in ordering. we have set our phone to remind us to eat there once a month as it is out of our way. certainly worth the trip.

mediocre experience. i came here based on a few good reviews. i wish the place well, but they appear to have hardly any traffic at all. the miso was good, the edamame looked old and withered, and the sushi pieces were small and looked not fresh as well. the price is okay, but it was a very average experience. i will not come here again.

we were in greensboro for a tang soo do tournament and on our last evening my son wanted sushi. we did some research and found this little gem. the service was excellent. our waitress was totally on top of things without being overbearing. the food was outstanding. we started with miso soup which was beautiful balanced, perfectly salted. next we had gyoza and shumai. both were delicious. we had several different rolls and all were some of the best we have ever had. the owner checked on us several times and even followed us out to say goodnight. if you live in the area, i envy you for having this precious place in your neighborhood.

terrible service, mediocre food. i've never written a negative restaurant review online before, but my experience at akashi was so bad that i felt like i had to warn others.

i went with a party of five other people. when we arrived at 6:30 on a saturday evening, the restaurant was empty except for two groups of three or four people each. four people in my party ordered sushi, and two ordered from the kitchen. it took an hour and forty-five minutes for the kitchen to prepare those two dishes. during that time, nobody came to our table to check on us, nobody answered my questions about why we were waiting, and other groups came, were served, ate, and left.

while we were waiting for our food, our group's plans for the rest of the evening were ruined. we asked the owner, who also works the sushi bar, to comp part of our check, but he refused and started shouting angrily at us. according to him, we should have known better than to show up as a party of six on a saturday evening without making reservations. at no point when we were there was the restaurant more than half full, and the party of nine that sat near us somehow managed to get their food on time.

the manager stood next to our table and glared at us while we paid our checks. then he shooed us out the door saying "be happy! come back soon!"

also, while the sushi wasn't terrible, it was also far from impressive. small portions of fish that wasn't very fresh, and the sushi menu had no original or interesting dishes.

my visit to akashi was one of the worst experiences i've ever had at any restaurant. if you're not one of the people who already love this restaurant for some reason, i would suggest that you stay away.

authentic highest quality sushi. locally owned. sushi is art here and oh so delicious plus hibachi meals for the non-sushi eater is excellent. management and staff are extremely interested in customer satisfaction. one of greensboro's finest.
