ad hoc was originally intended to be a temporary space filler as thomas keller put the finishing touches on his burger and wine restaurant concept, but it became so popular that he decided to keep it around. the concept is simple: a fixed price ($50 a hea

every foodie worth his artisanal salt knows that thomas keller is a culinary god. french laundry is a once-in-a-lifetime experience in dining bliss. that said, it's not the kind of place you can afford to go to on a whim. we tried it last time we were in

as its name implies, ad hoc was supposed to be a temporary six-month experiment before keller opened a restaurant specializing in gourmet burgers and wine. but ad hoc proved to be so popular that it’s now become a permanent member of keller’s restaurant f

what a bad experience. i am a local napa resident working in the wine industry. i finally visited ad hoc with some serious reservation.tk's restaurants tend to be local tourist traps with sub par food and inflated prices. ad hoc did not deviate from the reputation. $52 for bbq, well it should knock my socks off. not even close. sub par bbq, wait staff without a personality and over priced food to a point of sincere laughter. i will never agin make the mistake of following a celebrity chef. stale, boring and non receptive staff.
do yourself a favor, do your research and find one of many great foodie spots and enjoy. i want to kick my self for spending the money for such a lousy experience.
avoid avoid avoid, when ever i get the chance to share this story with visitors in napa valley i will. bouchon is probably your best bet if you need to go to one of tom's restaurants.

$49 for four courses by thomas keller? how can you go wrong?!. seriously.

make reservations.

the wine list is fantastic and offers wine from around the world from inexpensive to very, very, very expensive.

but it is all about the food. don't be fooled by the $49 price or by the idea there is only one menu each night. as with any thomas keller restaurant, everything is exceedingly well though out and painstakingly prepared.

i even had the amazing experience of sitting next to mr. keller at the bar one evening when he was having dinner.

… and here is the famous buttermilk fried chicken. definitely beats any kfc or popeye’s. arriving in front of us piping hot, the beautiful aroma had our mouths watering before we could even get a piece on our plate. the meat was well-flavoured, moist, and tender, and the batter was fried to perfection, making the crust shatteringly crisp. i was only able to finish 3 pieces because of the sheer amount of food i’d already consumed that day, but i desperately wanted to keep eating.

during our wine tasting day trip to napa via grayline (see recap here), we had some leisure time in the charming town of yountville.  david, his friend william, and i went for a casual brunch at thomas keller’s ad hoc restaurant.  while thomas keller has three restaurants in yountville, ad hoc is the most casual (though not michelin starred) and serves american family-style comfort food.

i've been wanting to come here for ever since they opened. so for my christmas present this year my wifey made the reservation. the menu changes daily so you never know what you're going to have till dinner. i get the daily email and so i see what they serve every day. i was kind of hoping for the fried chicken but all good, we had the amazing roasted chicken. we added the addition of bone marrow which was the best i've ever had. all in all it was all very yummy and our server was top notch. just what we'd expect from a keller establishment.

not at all anything to "write home about". the flat iron steak tasted cheap and was doused in butter and salt -- likely to mask the fact that it was cheap.

the bartender (sat at the bar) was completely off-putting. a terrible host, who should not be in the service business.

we were going to go to laundry, but not after this!

been here couple times now. twice for brunch and then dinner. i can officially say each visit exceeded my expectation. 3 - 4 course meal and served family style. our last visit we came to check out addendum but they were closed. we decided to check if ad hoc had any open tables. reservations is highly recommended so wasn't expecting to be any available, but to our surprise they had a table available out on the patio. yes!! we had our son with us for brunch and he didn't want to eat anything that was being served, so the waiter asked him what he wanted to eat and the chef ended up making him waffles and bacon. one of the best waffles i've ever had. my son also asked for chocolate milk. they didn't have chocolate syrup, but they were willing to melt some good quality chocolate for him and make him hot chocolate and he agreed to that. best hot chocolate i've ever had too. (good thing my son was willing to share). service has always been great and helpful. the food is yummy and i always end up craving for more. thank you to my friend for introducing me to this place. maybe one day we can actually go together. =) ad hoc - i love you.

for a background i am a 21 year old travelling alone that works in the wine industry. i found the restaurant the perfect balance between a laid back and fine dining atmosphere, staff were very friendly and unpretentious, i did not at all feel vulnerable sitting and eating alone here, manager came and talked to me and everyone was very attentive - food and wine timing was spot on and i was never left waiting too long without any ting. waitress was very informative about the menu and the optional wine pairing. as i received each meal everyone explained both the wine and dish in detail, which i find extremely important when a prix fixe menu is in place . food was a fantastic combo of fine dining with a comfort food twist. serving sizes were very generous (i had to take some in a doggy bag home) the wine pairings were the absolute stand out for me as each wine complimented the dishes so perfectly you would have thought they were made for each other. all of the wines were up to par, there were none that i disliked, most were sourced locally (as you would hope for the location). amazing bang for your buck with the basic 4 course meal coming in at $53 and the wine pairings an extra $39 great atmosphere would definitely visit again.

if i could eat anywhere everyday i would eat at ad hoc, if i was on death row for my last meal i would have dinner delivered from ad hoc.

i have been to 1,000's of restaurants., regardless how expensive or inexpensive, fine dining or casual ad hoc it's my all time favorite hands down..

as for ad hoc, imagine thomas keller’s refined palate but family-style. it’s great for a casual dinner and reservations can be made a couple days in advance or even on the day depending on how many people are in your party. we had a group of 4 and easily booked a reservation 1 day in advance.

the menu that day did not sound as exciting at first glance, but what came out far surpassed what you could imagine being on that plate…
