yia yia takes advantage of teens.. yia yia bistro in leawood took advantage of teens at homecoming and when i called them to rectify the situation, they did not follow through with what they promised. here is what happened: a group of 8 students made a reservation for dinner at 7 pm and showed up on time (i drove them; they were there on time). they were made to wait 55 minutes for a table even though the restaurant sat a group of 8 adults who had a 7:30 reservation (they were told the adults had a different table reserved for them!). once seated the students were given "special" homecoming menus. the table asked for the regular menu because they did not want the "special" (beverage, small salad, limited entree choice, specific choc dessert). they were told they had to order from the special menu. since maia is a vegetarian and the "special" menu had no veg choices, they "let" her order from the regular menu then they made it the homecoming "special". that made her $9 pizza cost $22. others in her group asked to order from the regular menu and not have the "special" (they did not want a beverage and/or the salad and/or the choc dessert) and were told no. they ordered from the "special" menu. the total came to $55 per couple. do the math. the restaurant charged the kids $22 per person for the meal than they added a 25% "service fee". i called the restaurant on sat night and spoke to todd, the weekend manager. he said they should have been allowed to order from the regular menu if they asked. i told him they asked and were denied. he offered the teens one of two options - a refund or a certificate for a future meal. i told him i had to speak to the teens and would let him know on sunday. on sunday, when i called him, he changed the offer. i went to the restaurant to discuss the situation with him. only my daughter and her date could have a refund. the other teens got nothing. i pointed out that this was not his offer. he said he had closed the books for sat and that only the general manager could change things. i took the refund for one couple (we split it between all the couples). he told me the general manager - ms. cochran - would call me on monday. she did not. i called on tuesday, was put on hold by the hostess. no one answered again - i gave them 10 minutes. we will never patronize that restaurant again. whether you do or not is a personal decision. however, before you do, think about this - if it were your teen or if it were you would you give your business to a company who treats their customers poorly based solely on age and how they are dressed? if you went to a restaurant and everyone else around you was ordering from the regular menu and only you had to order from the "special" menu and had to pay for items you don't really want then got charged an outrageous "service fee" would you find that enjoyable? if the restaurant had allowed them to order from the regular menu and/or charged the standard 18% tip for a party of 7 or more then things would be different. yia yia bistro did not. they discriminated against this group because they are teens. basically, they ripped off some teens.
