traditional and unfiltered authenticity. i actually like joints like this that have a little edge to them. there is a scene in the movie "gran torino" with clint eastwood where the longtime barber and eastwood's character unceremoniously exchange barbs, innuendo and colorful colloquialisms as they both meet and part ways. it is the expected and comfortable aspect of their authentic relationship. it might even be a guy thing. though the owners and operators of lp's windy city chicago style hot dog are not at all as ribald as i just described, they certainly have the comfortable familiarity one enjoys when frequenting these kind of quirky places. in addition to the friendly hospitality, they happen to have really good hot dogs. the classic chicago version has every single authentic ingredient to include the sports peppers, celery salt, the crispy dill pickle spear and even the electric green relish. combined with fresh sliced tomatoes, onions and classic yellow mustard, all atop a genuine vienna hot dog with a poppy laced roll, and you end up with a thing of beauty. it is delicious, crunchy, savory and right on target. the chili dogs are equally tasty and perfectly matched with the vienna dogs and sausages. the potato salad is commercially made, but adequate. they do have cream soda and other expected beverages. lpwccshd also serves italian beef sandwiches with a proper hot giardiniera salad topping. it looked good, but i need any pathetic excuse to return. so i will try it next time...you know, for science. the prices are fair and affordable, and the service is wonderful, just a little ornery, and culturally aligned with the plethora of chicago paraphernalia on the walls. it is a fun place to grab a real deal dawg. you gotta try it.
