we couldn’t pick a favourite, both had a delicious base, not overly oily and had a nice mix of flavours and they weren’t heavy handed with the ingredients. i can see why people come here for the food.

offering relaxed, friendly hospitality it has a range of good value specials, like happy hour drinks 4-6pm ($5.50)…. ..$10 pizzas or two for one burgers $22.50 on sundays from 4pm (definitely a great time to go as there’s live music as well 3-6pm)…and two meals for the price of one for canberra entertainment book holders.

what was once a suburban treasure is now a disorganised pseudo-pub-machine slowly pumping out lacklustre food. service is chaotic and haphazard. eftpos is frequently out of order and that just matches the overall vibe.

canberra is famous for the suburban gems located at its local shops. wilbur’s is truly one of these. well love and well supported by locals, it is also a well kept secret that it has terrific food!. serving breakfast ( for extended hours), lunch and dinner and offering plenty of great specials it also generously offers a two for one option for canberra entertainment book holders.

hackett shops aren’t large by any means, and wilbur’s takes up a good portion of it, with plenty of outdoor seating in the sun, and a very dark but large inside dining area. we’re greeted as we step inside, and shown to a table outside when we agree we’d prefer the sun, with menus placed before us. our friendly waiter announces some of the specials – while her recall is rather good, some dishes have ingredients like, ‘and other really yummy stuff’ – and tells us we can order inside.

the regular menu offers appetizers like arancini balls (yum!) and apple cider oysters, a whole page of pizzas, typical pub food like chicken schnitty and steak sandwich, and some pastas. kids meals are also available. the specials menu looked enticing so i chose the char-grilled eye fillet with homemade potato gems, grilled zucchini, caramelised red onion relish and a garlic prawn skewer ($32.90). i was happy with the presentation. the potato gems were crunchy on the outside and warm and fluffy inside (oh yes!). the prawns were cooked perfectly and had plenty of garlicky flavour. i asked for a medium-rare eye fillet which is unusual for me as i rarely order steak. however, after the best steak ever at the veuve clicquot truffle dinner, i totally changed my preference on how i like a steak cooked. this eye fillet was perfection – a fantastic cut of meat, cooked the way i wanted it. it was deliciously tender and juicy. i would gladly go back for more! my friend ordered the pale ale barramundi with chips and salad ($21.90) off the regular menu. the strips of barramundi were smaller pieces than anticipated and it seemed overpriced for just that little portion of food. from wilbur’s facebook page, it looks like the specials menu changes frequently (daily?) and there are a lot of yummy sounding items. the confit duck with poached pear and scallops was my second choice dish – sounds interesting and i’ve nev

a quick glance at the dinner menu revealed a number of mains and pizzas around the $20 mark. more expensive than a typical pub but cheaper than your typical canberran gastropub or fine dining establishment, while still having a nice variety of dishes that i knew would appeal to the boyfriend.

wilbur’s at the hackett shops is a good value, easy, family friendly restaurant with a warm open fire and comfortable atmosphere. wine is well priced with a range of bottles at around $23. meals are well sized making sharing easy. a large pizza, salad and mezzo platter offered a good variety of flavours, textures and colours for four adults and a child to share.   mezze plate $21.50 warm lamb salad $20 capricossa pizza $20

not bad. the place has relaxing atmosphere and the food is not bad. the staff not very friendly though. we were new there and didn't know that we had to order at the counter. the wait staff just ignored us. we were puzzled and annoyed.

great service, nice ambience, but the food was a bit average. i ordered the eggs benedict on potato cakes for breakfast. the potato cakes were completely overcooked and almost burnt and the hollandaise sauce on the eggs tasted like it had been made with cream and vinegar. all my friends' meals looked great though so i'll be back for a different menu option soon.

best eye fillet in canberra. i haven't found anyone else that has better quality meat for under $30 than wilbur's café and bar, absolute best in canberra, i love the wine list and the beer on tap they offer. it has everything you want, can bring kids too, its just great.

glorified club dinner. came here after seeing the rating and left perplexed as to why it was so high.

you'd think that the food was served by god himself and that the food made you miraculously lose weight.

if you want fill your boots, come here, but it's nothing special. i found it really disappointing.

sunday afternoon lunch. we went there on a sunday afternoon and ordered a steak burger and a pollo loco pizza with a couple of shakes. the burger was great, and the chips on the side were also pretty good. the aioli on the pollo loco was perhaps a bit overpowering, but the chutney base was excellent and i'd definitely recommend it. service was good without being amazing, but i've no cause for complaint.

wilbur's cafe bar opened up in the previously neglected hackett shops a couple of years ago. they have a delicious breakfast menu, and are just far enough from our place (5 kilometres, or about 3 miles) to provide a wee bit of exercise cycling there and back. we enjoyed our brekkie there today ... he had: french toast, with strawberries, maple syrup and a side of bacon. long black. comments: i like the way the toast is arranged to look like a log cabin. generous servings. she had: eggs florentine, flat white. comments: yummy, and just the right size. it's a nice, relaxed place to start your sunday. hackett place, hackett, act 2602. location:
