whitey’s fish camp

i've wanted to try whitey's for a long time and was finally able to...and i was not pleased. the fried food was mediocre at best and the sides looked promising, but were not. i wouldn't go back.

a nasty lowlife bar ....if that's what you like you will fit right in. thank goodness.... i sold my house and got away from fleming island. considering that it was a good night when the men had both sides of their overalls up and their teeth in... that's just about it there! the food is nasty... disgusting overcooked deep fried in old oil crap! i took my visiting children there for dinner and they looked at me and said...wtf mom! thank goodness i did move! wake up people! there is life beyond jacksonville hole!

the fried gator was amazing! fun atmosphere! we sat outside and it was surprisingly not awful hot. watress had a bit of an attitude, but service was fine. it was a neat and different place to kick back with a beer and friends. will definitley be bringing out of town visitors to this place for the experience.

liketoeat. mother's day was awsome! we had a bit of a wait, but it was less than the hostess said it would be. the buffet was one of the better i have had, crab legs, shrimp, ham, and smoked salmon. all i could eat!! i sat on the lower deck area by the water and loved the music, reggae,

fried seafood, beer, and music on the water. this weekend was not only mother's day weekend, but it was a time for discovery! friday night, eric & i finally made it to whitey's fish camp, having vaguely heard about its location, we drove around fleming island until we stumbled upon the mass of cars in the parking lot. right on the water with boats sauntering up all night, live music on the deck, and plenty of adults, families, and people waiting to feast on fried seafood and washing it down with beer and soda, we waited grumpily (we were starving) but patiently for a table outside.

once seated, we enjoyed watching the sun go down and ordered plenty of fried seafood to satisfy us. service on a night like this is excruciatingly slow; don't expect get in and out of here in an hour. our hush puppies came hot, fresh, and quite large - very good. next was my fish-n-chips, 2 perfectly fried and beer battered catfish with crispy, hot, & salty chips and a lovely cole slaw side all for only $7.95 (dinner portion is much larger for around $12.95). not greasy at all, i inhaled my meal (did i mention we were starving?). eric ordered the po boy fried shrimp sandwich that came with fries; he thought it was good, but he liked mine better.

food good. service inconsistent. i've eaten here about 10-12 times. i've always enjoyed the food (catfish excellent). but the service is inconsistent. one time i called in a take out order yet i still had to wait over 30 minutes after i arrived (it was wings - they could have cooked the wings two times over while i was waiting.). nice atmosphere, but i liked it better before the fire and expansion.

i like the atmosphere. the food is ok. they don't know what grilled oysters are. my salad was good. there is no gluten fee menu.

awesome despite bad reputation. nowhere will you have the same experience. ive heard good and bad about this place. some friends say it's amazing and some say it may as well be frozen fish... i decided i'd give em a try. it was a slightly busy friday night and we wanted to sit by the water, which isn't hard to do since the deck is practically on top of the creek! the server immediately greeted us after being seated and said he would be right back (he had his hands full). funniest server ever, and was knowledgeable about the menu. my friend ordered the catfish basket that whiteys is famous for and i ordered the grilled shrimp. both were awesome and didn't take too long to cook either! the total price for our two meals was under $25 and we left full! this is absolutely a new favorite in jax! i can't wait to return and try out the tiki bar, didn't have enough time to stop for drinks this time around! this place may have a bad reputation but i give em five stars for my first visit!!!

is that fish frozen?. great location but the fish didnt seem fresh, cole slaw was in a small container and was gone in thee bites.

stay away. terrible service, terrible food, place should have stayed burned down.

if you order anything that's not your run-of-the-mill fried fish camp food you will be disappointed. order mahi mahi and it was so dry.

date night. the last time i went to whitey's was over 10 years ago - recently took the wife there for the first time and had a lovely meal. i was glad to see that they were still serving fresh seafood and generous portions. my wife loved how fresh and well prepared her scallops were. our waitress, suzie, did a great job making sure our meals arrived promptly and our drinks were always topped off. next time we go, we will be taking the rest of the family!

as much as i do not like to leave bad reviews, and knowing how detrimental they can be, i was given no choice after my visit on 3/27/21. recently, i moved to the area and drove by the restaurant several times inspiring me to want to dine there. so i went on this past saturday night with the wife for a relaxing dinner on the water. i was ok with the 30 minute wait to get seated as it was a saturday night. i am also admitting that there was a sign at the front desk that stated it would be a 40 minute wait until food would be ready. the wife and i were seated, given the menu and then we waited. fifteen minutes later someone finally came to take our drink order. after receiving our drinks, we put an appetizer order of chips in at approx. 6:26pm. i figured since the food would take 40 minutes as the sign said, then an appetizer would keep us occupied. well......45 minutes yes 45 minutes later we received our appetizer of chips. it may have been good, but we were not given but three minutes when out comes our meals. we had to put the appetizer aside so as to not let our meals get cold. our meals were actually pretty good, however my wife was shorted one of her sides. we did not see the waitress again to ask if everything came out ok until after we finished our meals. when she finally came to the table she had the audacity to comment that she knew the appetizer would come out the same time as the meal, as she chuckled and bragged that she "called that right" in her words. oh wait..did i mention that we asked her at the beginning of the meal to put in an additional meal for us to take home for our 18 year old who was staying at home to watch the kids so we could go out. as she brings us the check, she has this look on her face and says, "shoot! i forgot to put your to go order in." fortunately i had enough leftover to put a dish together to take home for him and told her to forget about the to go order since we did not have another hour to wait for it to be prepared.
as to not completely condemn this visit, i will say the food was good. it was a bit salty, but the food quality was above average. but, it was not good enough to wait 2 hours and such poor service to get. i believe fault lies within the management. we were not visited one time by any member of management while dining as in other places where a dining room manager would float around making sure patrons are happy. there is no reason why an appetizer should take 45 minutes to be sent to the table. having an effective kitchen manager present would have avoided that. the appetizer, since we were not able to eat it by fault of theirs, should have been taken back and removed from our bill.
bottom line...i will never and i mean never go back to this place. i will also go out of my way to tell every person i meet how strongly i feel about the poor service that was provided while encouraging them not to dine at this establishment. i am sorry but there was no excuse for what the wife and i had to experience saturday night.
i wish you the best and hope that you can get your sh#@ together for future patrons. (not us)

wonderful food, great service. will recommend to friends and family. wish they had delivery services so we can have it all the time from home or work.
